Title: D Day - 80th Aniversary 6th June
Post by: CapriCapri on June 04, 2024, 06:03:04 PM
What a day in history!  And how we should be thankful for the brave men and women who played their part in the liberation of Europe.  I am always in awe of the great people who selflessly rose to the occasion when needed.

Seeing the remaining survivors of the epic battle for freedom heading off to France for the commemoration fills me with respect and brings more than a few tears to my eyes.  They really were (are) 'The Greatest Generation.'  Respect and thanks to all who played their part.  As my parents always said, we are not fit to clean their boots!

It's sad that man hasn't yet learnt !!!  from when time began.   :-\. !!!

I wonder how many would dash to protect the UK when push comes to shove!  It terrifies me , I think that those men/women on both sides were made of different stuff.  It was seen as a challenge to be faced along with comrades .  But they had WW1 behind them so War was still in the fore front of minds.

Tnx for this thread.

Totally agree. If it happened today I suspect many would be running away instead.

Recent poll suggests 30% of under 40s would refuse. But then when patriotism is being systematically knocked out of people it's little wonder. The younger generation are being raised with a different perspective.

War experiences weren't often talked about so men weren't aware of the horrors in the same way as we are in recent times.   :'(

Our government/opposition aren't exactly role models  >:(

Will there be a minutes silence tomorrow?

I cried today listening to those old men and the accounts. They were so young and imagine going through that and then living such long lives.
