Hi,
So I've started Nitrofurantoin for a UTI. I've taken this before.
Ive taken two doses of 100mg and am getting tingling in my hands and feet. I'm sure it's the antibiotic.
Just spoken to a GP who said it's not the antibiotics as it's not listed as a side effect ! I've already checked the NHS website which lists it as a reaction.
Has anyone else had this as a side effect ?

Firstly: has the GP sent a fresh urine sample to a Lab for testing to see if there is a 'bug'?
It mayB that you have vaginal atrophy, has the GP discussed this with you?
If I was getting tingling etc., I would stop and report on the yellow card system. Do check with a pharmacist too.

Hi, yes a urine sample showed infection.
I did get the antibiotic changed as unfortunately the tingling and burning got so bad 111 sent me to A&E.
The hospital said it was a reaction.
I'm also already on treatment for VA.
Thanks

R U feeling better at all?

I had awful side effects from a three day course of Nitrofurantion. It gave me crippling muscle pain and I couldn't wait to finish the dose. I went on to have two more courses over time with the muscle pain just bearable.
It turned out I didn't need to go through all the pain when VA treatment was what I needed.

Hi, yes I'm better now thanks. Took about 4 days for the tingling in my hands to stop. I've now had it put on my notes I'm allergic to this drug !

Well done. Have U reported on the yellow card scheme on line? It's a bit of a trek to get through it but worth while in case others have symptoms.

Oh what a coincidence I have just posted on this subject! Absolutely YES peripheral nerve damage is a side effect - it's in the leaflet with mine!
It can also be irriversable (usually on longer doses but occasionally shorter)

no, I haven't but it's noted as a side effect / allergy risk on the NHS page on Nitrofurantoin. I fact it's a red box warning stating if pins and needles develop go to A & E,
When I spoke to a GP at my practice he said " oh it can't be the antibiotics" - really

Hells bells- did you post on this forum ?
It seems this reaction happens a lot as I found other posts on other groups about it.
I'm never taking it again. My GP said it's the first line choice for UTI well it might be but not for me.

Yes I did - 'To take or not to take' :)

it's an awful Antibiotic, I read on other forums that these side effects happen.
From what I've read Nitro was actually developed in the 1950 s . Maybe the NHS prefer to prescribe it as it's cheap.
I'm glad you got sorted.
