Title: Dry mouth and burning mouth syndrome
Post by: Gilly23 on March 16, 2024, 07:51:48 AM
Hi everyone. I am visiting a gynaecologist this morning to discuss going on HRT. I have vagina atrophy and have been struggling with this for ten years. So far been treated locally by vagifem or ovestin. I am always having flare ups and uti symptoms so looking for more help. An additional issue I have had for the past four years is dry mouth and burning mouth. Got no where with dentists and just have to endure. Please could anyone comment if they think this is another lack of oestrogen symptom and would HRT help. It’s a miserable condition and on days when my vagina and mouth is sore I can feel quite desperate.
Many thanks for any replies.

How often are U using the vaginal atrophy treatment, some ladies require application every night.  I use 'ovestin' internally with a smear around the labia region, others use 'sylc' or 'yes' products.  1 cannot over dose on VA treatments ;-).  I know that some insert 'vagifem' as well as using 'ovestin' externally.

Occasionally other forms of HRT can help atrophy though localised treat3emtns directly into the vagina have been a saviour for me!

Have U seen the gynae previously about this issue, is he/she au fait with peri-menopause?   Let us know how you get on.

Burning mouth syndrome: if there is sodium laurel sulphate in your paste it may cause burning, 4 me it's bananas, chocolate or tea that is instant.

As oestrogen levels drop the body may become dry, inside and out.

I don't suffer with the mouth symptoms but I know it's a symptom of menopause,  they were even discussing it recently on This Morning with a dentist.  She said she had not been taught anything about it's link to menopause during her years of training but it is common . So you're definitely not alone x

Interesting ... I wake up with a dry mouth some mornings (possibly another lovely symptom of menopause - mother nature is so kind to us all, eh, NOT!)  I also have horrible VA - I feel your pain xx

In case this helps, my husband had burning mouth syndrome for years and finally we got to the cause of it, not the GP or dentist.  It turned out to be oral thrush. It was never enough to be visible over the years until one day the back of his tongue was white.  He does wear a plate so I think it's linked to that.
I wonder if it's worth you either trying the over the counter Dactarin or a script from the GP.  It really isn't always visible apparently.  He also found using diluted apple cider vinegar (the one with the mother!) throughout the day also helped.
Of course I realise yours may be hormone related but just thought I'd throw this in, in case it helps you.

Thank you all. It’s a complex subject and I bet as you say loads of people have it and like me put up with it. I recently got some dry mouth tablets from Amazon. You stick them to the upper gum and they dissolve slowly. They have helped a lot.
I saw the gynaecologist and she has put me on the gel pump, 2 a day and progesterone tablet at night 100mg. I am going to do ovestin every other day as well.
I am nervous about this, it feels experimental but nothing ventured nothing gained. I am doing a daily journal of my symptoms and seeing her in 6 weeks to review.
I will post if my mouth and VA. Improves.  This site is really good for us ladies to compile information and what works.
Thank you to the lady re the thrush suggestion, I will look into that as welll. The tablets from Amazon are called xylimelts if anyone wants to try them  x

Morning Gilly23 - U may require 'ovestin' every night for a while to plump up the vaginal walls .  It can be Trial and Error until we find a way of managing VA symptoms  ::)

Sorry to hear you have had miserable time and glad you're trying HRT.  Just to add to the others dry mouth is very definitely a peri/mno symptom - for some it's dry eyes or even ear canals.  Hope new regime helps xx

Hi
For all those suffering from a burning mouth, please try Bio Active Omega 7 Sea Buckthorn from Pharma Nord. I had a horrible mouth for months and was desperate! I did lots of research and found Omega 7. It has been life changing. It took about three months to feel a difference and now after a year I hardly ever get a burning mouth.
Good luck all. Menopause is terrible!!!

Also SLS in toothpaste may be the cause!  It's the foaming agent.  When I changed my paste the symptoms went.

I know this is an old thread now, but just in case it helps anyone suffering from a burning tongue, my husband has had a flare up again, with no visible cause this time. I picked up some 'ginger shots' at Sainsbury's the other day, they're in the chiller with all the kombucha type drinks. It's really hot but he only needed a little, which he used about 3 times a day a bit like a mouth wash, rather than just drinking it. A week on and the burning is barely there.
Again, I know there are many different causes, but thought I'd mention it.

Mrs Mitch does your husband swallow the ginger shots or gargle with it? I suffer daily with burning tongue & roof of my mouth. I will try anything so will buy ginger shots & try them. Thanks for letting us know

He swishes it round his mouth for a little bit first, before swallowing. The brand he uses is
Moju fresh root ginger shots. I just bought and extra strength one yesterday with double the ginger. You'd only need a small sip tbh.
It's a bit pricy so I thought I'd try steeping fresh ginger in boiling water and see if that has the same effect for him. Apparently chilli peppers work too, chop them, steep in boiling water then just sip when cooled, I suppose doing it that way, you wouldn't need to swallow it. But the drink has apple juice in it so whilst hot, tastes nice.
I hope it works for you because I know how dreadful it can be and hard to get rid of. Let me know if it helps you.

Can I ask how were you diagnosed with burning mouth?

I have had a sore tongue/mouth for the past 6 months. I have been to the dentist who can’t find anything wrong and the GP has prescribed oral thrush medicine twice which has not made any difference.  I don’t know whether to go back and see him again or live with it.

I was diagnosed with burning mouth syndrome about 10 years ago. I'd had a terrible reaction to a temporary plate put in while waiting to complete an implant in 2012 - the dentist said it looked like my whole mouth was burnt. That all healed but left me with intermittent soreness and dryness. The dentist then referred me to the hospital (probably ENT) and after tests and examination I got the diagnosis. This did all coincide with menopause so I suspect that isn't helping.

There's not a lot to be done about it it seems and I've just learned to live with it. For the last couple of weeks I've been using SLS-free toothpaste as was suggested here but it hasn't made any difference. I also dug out a tube of Biotene dry mouth gel which I've been using at night which helps a tiny bit for a while.

A few year ago I started noticing dry mouth.  I told my dentist and confirmed it was dry and referred me to the hospital to have it checked.  The hospital said that it was dry and did some basic checks and suggested it could be down to menopause or sjogrens.  Sjogrens can only be confirmed with a lip biopsy.  they recommended biotene products and said see notice if the hrt helps.  HRT has helped a little.  I also suffer with dryness in bowel and vagina area and use imvaggis pessaries and put blissel gel on the exposed areas.  I was also having bladder irritation but no UTIs where found despite symptons.  The products have helped but need to keep them up.  I have not had any lip biopsy as there is nothing they can do for dryness however I may return if the symptons get troublesome.  Also lemon sweets, ice cubes and drinking plenty of water and fruit and veg all contributes.  I hope this helps.

Burning mouth can also be due to sodium laurel sulphate in toothpaste.

Ice cubes are easy to make, 1 can put juices in too for occasional use.  Or herbs ........... i.e. mint.  Lollies or ice-pops too will help.

I self-diagnosed my symptoms. But after dentists and doctors couldn’t find anything wrong with me, they agreed with my diagnosis. It was only because of my on-line research did I find out that 30% of menopausal women suffer from Dry Mouth or Burning Mouth Syndrome. I couldn’t believe that the doctors (some of them menopause specialists) hadn’t come across BMS. Especially when it is SUCH a life changing symptom.
I’ve posted before about this, but taking Omega 7 supplements has made a massive difference to me. The BioActive Omega 7 supplement I take includes Omega 3,6,7,9 and Vit A which maintains normal structure and function of mucous membranes such as in the eyes, nose, mouth and female reproductive tract.
Before I found this supplement I bought root ginger. I used to chop it up into small pieces and whenever my mouth felt burny (often before and after meals) I’d chew (very briefly…it’s very strong) a bit. Ricola sugar free sweets are also very helpful.

Well thank goodness I have found this discussion!
I have just been diagnosed withGSM and also have had dry/ burning mouth and sore eyes.
I had no idea that they could be linked to the menopause!
Thank you for all the information. I will definitely try omega 7.

I have been clinically diagonised with Burning Mouth or BMS some 10 years ago.  Yes the SLS free toothpaste is the first step.
I also had a biospy to see it it was anything else.  I was given dispersable steriods to use as gargel for 2 weeks only.  Seen at maxio Facial Dept.

Then Difflam rinse if flares.

As I mentioned in another thread also have dry eyes and use vagifem too.

Funny that some have mentioned oral thrush.  Last year I had what I thought were cold sores/open cracks either side mouth...I was given Nystatin and literally over night it eased.

It is amazing how years on and in late sixities then penny has dropped on so many things that came my way years ago.
