Ive had a read through this site to see if I could find anything about Turmeric contraindicating HRT. Some information online reports that Turmeric competes with the HRT for estrogen receptors, which I am interpreting as reducing the effects of the HRT. I started Turmeric a few weeks ago to help with inflammation and body aches, its starting to help me but I do not wish to scupper the HRT benefits , which at the moment are not too brilliant as they stand! Still having night sweats despite 4 gel pumps :-\. Has anyone else come across this information?
Thank you

Hi. I've been taking curcirmin elite (a high dose turmeric product) for 18 months now, longer than I've been on hrt and it hasn't impacted effectiveness for me. I'd keep going with the turmeric (and not adding in any other new products) and see if anything changes. Could you perhaps not be absorbing the estrogen?
-
It's usually a loss of oestrogen that causes laxity of muscles = aches and pains. Lots of Indian recipes have turmeric in, however: it stains. YELLOW ::). As long as the body excretes what it doesn't require, there's no harm in giving it a try.

Good to know thanks! Is that the brand name? I’m keen to reduce inflammation in the body in general as my immune system is up in the air, also looking at gut health with my diet. I’m certainly not absorbing HRT as I should be. I’ve got such dry skin on my arms wondering if I should try it on the bottom next! Unfortunately patches didn’t work and I can’t take the tablets due to risks of clots (mum had dvt) determined to keep going as any estrogen is better than zero.

Buffy26 - do get an appt with a dedicated menopause clinic for proper advice. There are several ways of delivering HRT some mayB suitable for your medical history.
As oestrogen levels drop the body may become dry: inside and out; skin, deep in the ears, eyes, nostrils, vagina etc.. I find that 'vaseline' hand cream in the yellow bottle really good on hands and legs as well as 'nivea'. Last week developed a small area of itchy rash for no apparent reason on a buttock, DH applied 'vaseline' which relieved it. He uses it on his dry shins.

Thank you CLKD, I did see a menopause specialist for a several appointments privately then we had a lady GP with Menopause as her speciality join the local NHS doctors surgery (yayyy and more please for all ladies!) so I continued my care there as It was getting quite costly. I will ask her if there are any alternatives to tablets/gels and patches. She said my levels were normal on the last two bloods, but that was on 4 pumps. Apparently my levels should optimal on that dose of HRT so clearly absorption is an issue.

Hi the brand is called Life Extension and the product is called Curcurmin Elite, its capsules, I take two per day. It was originally part of a plan to reduce risk of recurrence of colon polyps but then found out it is good for you in so many other ways too.

Hi Buffy,
I'm sorry this has nothing to do with turmeric, but many women (myself included) have has huge problems with '
'new' oestrogel. Since switching to Sandrena a few months ago those issues all resolved.
Just a thought. Sorry if it's of no use xx

I know that brand, its a really well respected one. I will check that out. Thank you also for the insight into colon polyps, I had some and one was unreachable, so to know the benefits there too!

If that is of interest, then definitely have a look at the Life Extension website and search for colon polyps / colon cancer - they list all of the other supplements and things that reduce risk, and some are so simple to include, like selenium (three brazil nuts!!!)

I take turmeric & it helps so much with my aches & pains. It doesn’t seem to affect my HRT.
-
I tried turmeric for joint pain a while ago. Is it safe to take long term. I got put off because it caused a strange colour slight vaginal discharge, well turmeric colour. I got worried because it resembled blood, but probably wasn't.

Are you sure the turmeric caused that? Were you talking it as a supplement? I do know that you have to be careful if on anticoagulants as turmeric can thin the blood in large doses, my mum couldn't take it for that reason. Can't say I've noticed any abnormal vaginal discharge though and have been on a high dose for 18 months, I wonder what in it caused yours.
-
It's not a large amount of the herb, to gain continual benefits 1 would have to be swallowing a huge amount.
How 'large a dose' would 1 be taking turmeric in order to thin blood?
It may certainly stain urine. It's used in Indian cookery - I probably said already ::). Colours rice yellow.
-
No I'm not on anticoagulants. I wouldn't say it caused an abnormal discharge it was more staining normal vaginal moisture. I had problems with post menopause bleeding a while before so hyper anxious about anything.
-
Hello ladies.
suzysunday - Can I ask if the pink staining disappeared when you stopped taking the turmeric?
I eat a little turmeric powder every day and I also have a pinkish stain appear on my underwear. I was concerned that it may be blood or perhaps the result of vaginal atrophy but you have made me think it may be the turmeric powder!
I am currently using two pumps of Oestrogel every day and recently changed from Cyclogest pessaries to Utrogestan tablets taken orally. I thought that if the Cyclogest wasn't working well and that was causing the staining then an oral progesterone would resolve that. However the pinkish staining continues.
Wishing you well and take care.
K.

Yes it did stop when I stopped the turmeric. I was disappointed cos I'd spent a few quid on the tablets. Maybe I should try again cos my bones don't half ache.
-
I would ask for an X-ray suzysunday rather than relying on turmeric which has no proven benefits.
Where exactly do your 'bones' ache? Any particular time of day/night.
I thought that I had sciatica until a Nurse examined me last year, it's a bursitis deep in both hips. 'itis' = inflammation. It's painful enough to wake me from 5.30 onwards.
Years ago I had acute, deep pain in the thigh muscles, so painful that I was unable to yell. Turned out that due to bending over antique cabinets at fairs, I had aggravated something. Do check your foot wear too as if the spine is compensating due to feet not being well supported, that may well cause pains.
I find that 'nurofen' taken when pain won't go, i.e. headache, backache, is enough as well as moving around often.

I've had lower back pain and pain in right glute that goes to the knee. Generally feel aches in legs, shoulder. I think it is lack of oestrogen, menopause maybe. Perhaps hrt would help, I'm only on local hrt. I get about okay, walk a lot and don't drive. Some days worse than others of course. It just gets you down sometimes.
-
Left hip also hurts but not as bad. I'm sure many on here are the same.

Estrogen definitely helped with my aches and pains, and then whenever I had progrsterone in for the 12 days they come back. I'd ask your GP about the staining you got but give the turmeric another go. What supplement / brand did you get? You need one that has curcurmin (the part of turmeric that has active properties) in
. Its great stuff and defo worth a try, you might find that and hrt are enough to keep any inflammation down.
Pm me if you want to discuss brands etc, I'm under the care of a great functional medicine doctor so know some really good ones.
Oh, also wondering if you stretch after exercising, especially if you walk a lot in one go. Just a few stretches like you'd do after the gym would help.

I have taken turmeric for a while & never had any sort of discharge
