Title: HRT and digestive problems
Post by: McGon on January 02, 2024, 03:03:49 PM
Hi has anyone experienced digestive problems with HRT? I have just started with IBS like symptoms and  the nurse at my doctors surgery who I see for HRT said it may be too much oestrogen. I use Oestrogel and Utrogestan. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have just started on Utrogestan.  Progestogens usually relax and slow down'smooth muscle', which is the muscle like your uterus which you have no conscious control over.  Usually I really struggle with constipation but (early days) I seem to be having unusual movement in the intestines, which would be a positive for me.

I have read that other women have problems with tummy upsets with utrogestan though.

I have not heard of problems resulting from the amount of oestrogen though.

Hormonal upheaval can certainly impact on the digestion.  10 mins B4 a bleed began I would have to dash to the loo with 'the runs', even when a period wasn't due.  No idea which hormone was involved  ::)

Both estrogel and utrogestan upset my digestive system in different ways - transit is faster with estrogen, slower with utrogestan. When I first started on estrogel and whenever I have tried to increase, it always causes indigestion, wind, loose poo. Utrogestan on the other hand, gives me increasing reflux and constipation. So both mess with me!! With the estrogen it does ease off though so worth persevering!

Yes!  I've just come off HRtc after 3 miserable years fighting with it.
Since i went on it (was 47 fully post meno) I developed heartburn, only ever had it before when pregnant so guessed it was hormone related.   It has gradually got worse and worse to the point I am now in agony with GERD!  my research says if you're on HRT you're 41% more likely to get it!!

I'm hoping now I've stopped the HRT this will get better too.   I already feel sooo much better mentally and physically just 2 days off that poison.

What surprised me is reading that both estrogen and progesterone hrt can cause or exacerbate reflux. I thought estrogen would make it better 🤷‍♂️

I don't take HRT and have suffered heart burn from the age of 11.  Milk of Magnesia was our go-to in the family.

A couple of years ago my GP prescribed a capsule - omeprazolol - to take in the morning which really helps.  Some find other preparations ease symptoms.

Thanks for all your replies. I’m still not 100% sure it’s HRT related by I’ve been trying everything. My symptoms are constipation, bloating, wind and stomach cramps after eating. GP not overly interested and gave me peppermint capsules and laxatives. I’m looking for a long term answer. I’ll try taking one pump and one tablet and see how it goes.
