Title: Gerd symptoms at night
Post by: Mummytron on September 06, 2023, 05:58:23 PM
Hi all,
Bit random but does perimenopause cause a hot, sore throat in the evening and at night?
Its something that has started with me and I know not everything is hormones but lots of things are!
Quick Google suggests it could be gerd/acid reflux.
Thanks.

It could very well be acid reflux. You may find it helpful to take Gaviscon before bed. I need to leave a four hour gap between eating and going to bed or I have a lot of acid reflux when I lie down.

I go through phases of this and gaviscon advance really helps. Big gap before bed and avoiding spicy food, tomatoes, alcohol or chocolate in the evening helps too. I still have a coffee in the morning though,  doesn't seem to bother me. Just make sure you don't eat or drink after the gaviscom though as it stops it working.

I get a bitter taste in my mouth, sore throat, hoarse voice, burning sensation in my throat and down my wind pipe. I sometimes feel nausea with it too.

Oh reflux!  It starts 4 me in the area between the ribs, works up with a lot of excess saliva and burning.  I've developed a cough so the GP prescribed omeprazolol in the morning..  Some nights it's worse than others.  I also wake sometimes with a deep pain but it's not heart related as there's no radiation of pain in the arms.

Milk of Magnesia is my go-to in the evenings.   As oestrogen levels drop the body may become dry: inside and out; skin, deep in the ears, eyes, vagina, vulva, scalp etc and muscles may become lax = aches and pains.  Hiatus hernia is common during peri, due to laxity of muscles.

Hi mummytron I have GERD but only the cough really very rarely get reflux so questioned a few times if I had GERD but after stopping the meds a couple of times the cough was back so I’ve given in and take daily tablet and use Gaviscon for the odd day I get the burning sensation 💕 I think there are a few symptoms and you might get some or all

I found that hidden sugars in foods, i.e. coke and bought cake, aggravates my cough  >:(.  Whilst in Covid recently I didn't get it at all, still trying to work out which food stuffs have caused the irritating cough.  I've cut out olives and live yoghurt thus far for other reasons.  But that cough  >:(

I'd advise to be careful about use of protein pump inhibitors (PPI's) such as Omeprazole.  They really should only be used short term as they can cause vitamin deficiencies, particularly B12.  The problem is GP's tend to leave people on them for years and think they're doing no harm.  I've used Gaviscon advance before bed, which is a much gentler solution (this can be obtained on prescription, as it's a bit pricey).  :)

Shorty Pants, you must have a good Gp, an ENT prescribed me Gaviscon advance with Omeprazole, but my surgery would only prescribe Peptac which is cheaper. I have to buy my own Gaviscon.

I have been on Omeprazole for a few years now, I know there are risks but nothing else stops the pain. I don't get food coming back up, just strange spasms around the oesophagus and lots of burping. Had a gastroscopy Nov '21 and all was clear then but who knows!! Back to ENT later this year anyway for the throat thing...

Am on HRT... but stress and anxiety which I have doesn't help GERD.

Haha!  Sorry, I should have said 'technically' available on prescription!  I just always buy my own as I honestly can't be bothered with the hassle!  ;D
Hopefully you get some answers soon...  :)

I am going through a phase of this and I'm putting it down to the heatwave which is making my back muscles ache and feeling nausea which brings on acid reflux.  Omeprazole and Gaviscon Advance is helping, GP doesn't prescribe it anymore but my goodness it's expensive, just as well I am at an age where I no longer buy many clothes, it all goes on meds now  ::)

I take my blood pressure tablets at night so would I be able to take gaviscon as well?

Could you take your BP meds with dinner then gaviscon at bedtime? You couldn't take them after the gaviscon and I think you'd need to leave enough time before the gaviscon for the tablets to have moved through your stomach and been absorbed.

I've had acid reflux for years and bouts of gastritis. Ulcer in the past.  It got very persistent in January.  I had a gastroscopy and was diagnosed with Barratts Oesophagus.  I'm on daily omeprazole.  I would advise anybody with persistent acid problems to get checked out. Don't manage off gaviscon indefinitely
