Title: Utrogestan both ways??
Post by: Kingfisher on May 02, 2023, 01:39:44 PM
Hi ladies
My first post.

I've tried utrogestan every which way.  I just wondered if anyone has taken it cyclically using both routes orally and vaginally at same time, to shorten the dose each route and therefore mitigate the side effects?

I've tried:
- 100mg orally 25/28 days pm, made me way too tired after second month (also vivid dreams).
- 200mg 2 weeks orally 3 month long cycle, constipation/piles (never again!).
- 200mg 2 weeks vaginally 3 month long cycle. Currently on this regime, so fed up with doing this for a whole 2 weeks, want a change!

I'm suggesting:
- 100mg 2 weeks orally with 200mg one week vaginally. I think I could handle that.

I just changed to oestrogel from sandrena, but this post is not really about that. I want to up oestrogel dose from 2 pumps to 3, but my private dr said I would then need to up the dose of utrogestan, which I dont really want. I'm also on vagifem.

I cannot tolerate utrogestan orally or vaginally so use 100mcg rectally every night under the guidance of a menopause specialist…absolutely no side effects at all this way

Just out of interest, do you have regular periods this way? Do you get any period pain?

Hey hunni I too suffer gastric issues on Utrogestan if taken orally I am to try vaginally next and did wonder about the anal route too.
Do you use anything in particular to insert it this way sorry I hope you don't mind me asking as if I can't tolerate it vaginally this will be my next method

Have you tried any other progestogens? I know utro is supposed to be the best because it's body identical but it makes me dopey too whereas the norethisterone in evorel had no side effects. Some people who have trouble with utro find they're OK with cyclogest or provera. Do you have scans so you know your lining isn't building up? I use a 6 week cycle but not sure I'd risk 3 months.

hi sheila99

sorry to cut in

when i use utro vaginally even at night it affects my sleep.

i am trialling using vaginally during the day but i wondered about how long it takes to be absorbed. the only info ive found from besins is for using utro vaginally as fertility treatment vaginally.

are you post meno sheila99 and can i ask how you use a 6wk cycle uf post meno.

thanks xx

Hi discogirl, I think I may be a bit odd because vaginal utro makes my sleep worse but orally it improves it. Both ways make me dopey in the day though. Probably post meno, still have symptoms of a cycle but without oestrogen perhaps not enough for a bleed. I've alway had a 6 week cycle so have continued with it, I'd rather bleed than be permanently half asleep. I use 200mgx12 days per 6 weeks instead of 4. I haven't found any good evidence for how long it takes to be absorbed but as you say if used for ivf you take it during the day so presumably most of it is absorbed even if you're vertical. How do you find using it in the day? I may try rectally next time but can't say I'm very keen on the idea.

Well..progesterone can be used rectally for fertility so because I had so many problems with utro orally and vaginally I asked my meno specialist if I could try cyclogest or lutigest rectally. She said to just use the utro and see how I got on..the others aren’t licensed for hrt use. I was fine no side effects on evorel sequi with norethisterone but was obsessed with using body identical prog..I might go back to those patches at some point as to put it bluntly I can’t imagine shoving things up my bum when I’m old 😳😂..I use a finger ..an applicator wouldn’t be good as could cause damage..I think a lot is absorbed this way but I don’t have any side effects..I wouldn’t do it without a dr agreeing it. Lots of drugs are used this way in France…we are a bit “anal” about it here lol

Well I guess whichever way works best for you lol. I will try utro orally again as could have been my Ads causing side effects and not the utro. Thanks for the info

Zara69 how far up do you put in a analy? Does it come out in bed and make a mess like it does vaginally?

Ooh- I am deffo going to try this rectally. I have been taking it vaginally for about three years and nearly always have to stop the course early as I get horrible womb ache and bladder irritation. They also give me cystic acne. I asked my GP to be put back on norrithisterone, which I can tolerate much better, ironically. She said no because there was a higher risk of blood clots? I didn't know progesterone could cause blood clots?

I use it at night..bit of lube on it and just inside ..your body sucks it in and it’s gone ..no mess at all..so easy, and I was initially frightened to try but no bladder or womb irritation no bloating or exhaustion but don’t try it without dr knowing what you are doing

What sort of lube do you use? Are there any that might stop it being absorbed?

could i ask.

i think hurdity a while ago mentioned a good point about using utro rectally and that was would the outer coating of the utro dissolve enough to give enough protection etc xx

I have done 2 days rectally now. So much easier. I have had horrible pain since last Sunday when I had been using it vaginally. The pain was so bad this month that I was about to stop taking them.
The pain has all but gone now :)

Hi
Yes- at night.
Having said that I am on day 8 of the utrogestan and I have started bleeding this morning. Usually I bleed 2 days after finishing the course when using vaginally.
I wonder whether the absorption rate IS different using it rectally? This early bleeding would happen if I used it orally and the absorption rates were may be more erratic.
Next month I will use it just rectally and see what happens. If I get early bleeding again then I will go back to vaginally- as much as I hate it- so painful😟😢

Doe it matter if you bleed early as long as it's a decent bleed? Are you still peri where it could be your own hormones?

A good question. I don’t know if I am still peri or not. I haven’t had an unexpected bleed for quite some time now. It could be that though.🙂

Well I'm going to speak to my gp tomorrow and I plan to use the utrogestan anally.

If i take it orally at night it keeps me awake, seems to be the same vaginally at night.

I have been using it vaginally during the day but with me peeing etc I'm concerned I'm losing a lot of it.

My plan is as long as gp is okay to use it rectally in the mornings (obviously after a bowel movement) sorry tmi;

I think rectally the capsule should 'stay up' easier and after readings posts on here and some research regarding anal use, albeit for fertility treatment, I think this is the best option open to me.

xx

Going back to my original post, does anyone have experience of using utrogestan orally and vaginally at the same time?

Thank you to Sheila who suggested cyclogest and other options, I would still need to consider how to take it.

I have one womb scan which was fine and due another one next month after course but before bleed as requested by my gynaecolgist.

Hi Kingfisher

I'm sorry I've never used utrogestan orally and vaginally at the same time.

Would it be worth posting a question to Dr Currie?
