Title: Help………womb lining of 8mm!
Post by: jaydee on April 15, 2023, 05:55:58 PM
I’ve been on HRT for 26years due to an early menopause.  In July 2020 I started on utrogestan 100 continuously, along with oestrogel………for the first couple of months I had slight spotting but all was fine up until three weeks ago when I had a slight period.  Fast forward three weeks and I’ve just had a transvaginal scan……
.to be told I have a large fibroid and my womb lining is 8mm.   I’ve also been told I need a hysteroscopy………
I’m terrified.  Any advice please?

Hi I had the same thing happen to me.  Bleeding resulted in a trip to the hospital on a two week referral. My lining was 11mm and a polyp was found. So a hysteroscopy was planned under general anaesthetic the following week. All went fine….polyp was removed and biopsy was clear. I’ve no idea if my lining is less now. Consultant at hospital was only bothered about the biopsy and I was discharged . My GP didn’t know what to do. That was 16 months ago.

So I would say …. don’t worry about it. xx

There are lots of articles and reports at the moment about unnecessary hysteroscopies for women on hrt.

I was referred back in march fir bleeding issues im postmenopause and on hrt my lining waa 10mm and i had a hyposcopy and all was fine she did say i had a few small fibroids but that they was fine and wouldn't have caused the bleeding which i thought different as ive heard thag fibroids do cause some bleeding, anyhow she gave me the go ahead to go back on hrt so im on patches now and ive started bleeding again.

Thank you Jan1234 for replying.  What did they do to reduce your lining, if you don’t mind me asking?

That’s the point……… I’ve always been on sequi so had regular bleeds; the gynae suggested I go on continuous as it was better at keeping the lining low.  She also recommended to my gp that I had a scan before embarking on new regime.  It didn’t happen.   Hence I don’t know if the thickening is due to taking continuous utrogestan, or it would have happened regardless.

I’m getting so confused with it all.

Sounds similar to my experiences. Usual womb lining is 5mm, which triggers investigations when I have ultrasounds.  Bleeding on HRT. Got my next review tomorrow and cervical screening on Weds. if needed, will have further investigations. Have been through all this before when on HRT. It seems to cause bleeds. If there’s nothing untoward comes up, I’m planning on a Sequi type of schedule. Always suited me before, and at least I’ll know when to expect a bleed.

I'm only two years post menopause, so it might not be relevant, but HRT causes bleeding for me.

My periods stopped in March 2021, in April 2022 I got HRT (Evorel Conti) and from May 2022 I've had periods again.
So after a year of monthly periods they took me off the post menopause meds (tibolone) and now I'm on Evorel50 + provera on sequi.

There are plans to bring me in for a scan sometime this year, it's probably going to be transvaginal but could be maternity ultrasound, wherever the waiting list takes me, lol.

The scan will check for anything bad, I've always had thicker than usual womb lining 6mm was measured one week after a heavy period, so by three weeks the doctor thought 18mm as an estimate. Never had fibroids, polps or other lumpiness, but my sister has had fibroids for decades, they aren't seen as a problem for her and everyone is very relaxed about my periods restarting after a 14 month holiday. I told my GP many times before speaking to the menopause nurse, the latter was very helpful, my GP was not bothered a jot.

Perhaps after having had early menopause you're forgetting how normal it is for us to bleed?

I think that when this is all sorted I’ll be going back to sequi………… never had any problems in the 26 years I’ve been on HRT.

There are lots of articles and reports at the moment about unnecessary hysteroscopies for women on hrt.
I was pushed into having a hysteroscopy when my lining was only 4-5 mm (and I was on HRT). Nothing was found. The lining was too scanty to take a biopsy and the whole experience under GA was unpleasant. 3 years on and my GP has blocked any supply of hrt until I answer their questionnaire. One of the questions is about bleeding. I had a small amount earlier this year on a couple of occasions but only because I had removed 1 patch and forgotten to apply the new one until the next day. I am really tempted to not tell them because I don't want another hysteroscopy.

Jaydee, I would have thought their first port of call would be to give you a heavy duty progesterone to clear the lining.   You would then have another scan to see whether it had cleared - that's what my gynaecologist would do anyway.

A hysteroscopy seems over the top.  A better idea would be to scan women regularly.

Mary G, fingers crossed that is what the consultant will suggest.  I’m expecting to hear from him in the next few days.  It was the sonography who mentioned a hysteroscopy.

Hello ladies.

A few years ago I saw an NHS Consultant privately ( complete waste of my time and money by the way). I did ask about regular scans to check the womb lining and she said that wasn't a good idea because ' you can't keep scanning women you know '.

The conversation moved on to something else but I wish I had asked her why that can't be done.

This was a while ago as I say and ideas may have changed but perhaps there is a reluctance to offer regular scans as a way of helping women manage their HRT? If so that is a real shame.

Take care ladies.
