Title: Stop taking Progesterone advice?
Post by: mforest on February 28, 2023, 02:52:46 AM
Hi, any experiences to share with stopping progesterone to know if you are truly in menopause?  I’m 54 still peri, taking cyclic 14 day bio progesterone to keep uterine lining in check each month due to skipped periods.

I’m thinking how will I ever know I’m truly in menopause while inducing monthly cycles.  My symptoms are manageable with diet, exercise and supplements.  The only reason I’m taking progesterone right now is to prevent uterine lining build up.
Any suggestions?

No idea, didn’t want you to feel unloved.  ;D It’s one thing I wonder about as I’m having a cruddy time right now with mine. Sore boobs, ovary pain and missing period. I’m pondering dropping my hrt patch to a 50 so I can go back to 100 Utrogestan (currently on  75 patch and 200mg on a 25 out of 28 day cycle)  sorry I can’t help.

Thank you for responding and sending me love!
HRT is not easy to dial in, always thought I would just go all natural until my uterine lining had other ideas.
Take care and hugs!

Hi mforest

If you're only taking progesterone during the second part of the month to help regulate your cycle then eventually when ovulation stops there will be no build up each month and eventually the bleeds will tail off. Maybe you will get bleeding for slightly longer than after your last ovulation because there is some ovarian activity post-menopause so theoretically there could be very slight thickening - not really clear about this.  However also if you take progesterone post-menopause without oestrogen it can also make the lining become too thin - called an atrophic endometrium, and can lead to ulceration and some bleeding or spotting. I have an idea that the type of blood in this case would be different - like bleeding from a sore rather than shedding a lining.

Where you are in menopause now may depend where you were when you started the progesterone ie how frequent your cycles were - how far apart your periods. If you only skipped the odd one here or there and have only been taking the prog for a few months then you probably won't be at menopause yet?

It won't do any harm to stop for  a while, for a few months and see when you next have a natural period or more than one. If you are still mid- peri then if you restart the prog then your next bleed or two may be a bit heavier thats all.

What progesterone dose and type are you taking? Utrogestan?
