Hi guys
Has anyone had. Hysteroscopy before?ive had heavy post menopausal bleeding and this morning had an ultra sound.this afternoon the hospital called me in this Thursday to discuss my results which has terrified me!and said I might have to prepare for a hysteroscopy?a friend went private as she had read online how painful it is! Im on hrt which was going great..I haven't had children.how do I prepare if I dont know whether I'm having it?looking g online it sounds like its worse than childbirth

I had a hysteroscopy but had general anaesthetic. It was fine done this way. x

Yes a friend went private but the nhs doesn't offer a general? Apparently there's a petition going thru parliament to stop it without a general as its so painful!!I dont even know whether I'm having it or not.they called and said maybe and to prepare.but not how!!

I’ve had two hysteroscopy procedures. Both were uncomfortable but painless. I took two paracetamol before and went back to work afterwards.
There are horror stories about these procedures, but honestly, if performed by a skilled practitioner, they should be painless.
I guess if you have an awkward shaped womb/ cervix, then a general might be better?

Thanks for your replies I guess I will have to see what they say on thursday.its been such a quick turn around from last week going to the doctor to today with ultra scan and now hysteroscopy on thursday.coming after my husband's prostate cancer diagnosis and its at the same hospital I'm not dealing with it too well..

I recently had a hysteroscopy and biopsy. Had post-meno bleeding, within 3 working days had vaginal scan with follow up two days later to discuss result. It showed slight thickening of womb lining and possible polyp so a biopsy was recommended along with fitting of Mirena Coil.
A week later I had the biopsy, it was done with a local anaesthetic and apart from a couple of uncomfortable moments wasn't too bad at all. I was told to take 2x paracetamol and 2x ibuprofen 2hrs before my appt. The Dr carrying out the procedure was wonderful and the three nursing staff in the room kept me chatting to keep my mind off what was happening. The local anaesthetic was application of a cream on my cervix, done by a nurse, to numb the area before the Dr injected the local anaesthetic.
I know everyone has different experiences but wanted to share mine as it really wasn't anywhere near as bad as I expected! About ten days later I got the all clear.

I'm about to have my seventh, having been in a loop for the last couple of years.
I've had one under GA and five with nothing except ibuprofen and paracetamol and a bit of local. I far prefer having them without GA and don't find it that bad.
With GA it's such a performance with pre-op assessments and lots of questions about whether I could walk 15 miles and whether I snored at night (!) and blood tests for something that can be done fairly quickly without any of this. The pre-op nurse was telling me I would have to tell my motor insurer and wouldn't able to drive for five days, and I just wanted to say STOP--let me have this without GA as I cannot stand all this fuss.
They want to discharge me but need to have a really good dig around first (their words).
They are ruling out (or have been over the last 2.5 years) atypical hyperplasia which may lead to cancer. Nobody has ever been able to definitively rule it out although nobody seems to think I have it.

Thanks for your replies!I'm going this afternoon but am so worried as I had the scan on Monday and they said it would be a week before I got the results.but they called me in the afternoon which has terrified me.it was a man and he spoke so quickly and said to prepare myself possibly for a hysteroscopy. So im terrified they've found cancer.i wish they would take care when calling.perhaps if he had said we are doing it very quickly this week?and its not till this afternoon..

I was freaked out after my first scan, too, having expected nothing to be found.
But there are so many things that aren't worst case: I've had polyps. Hyperplasia that isn't atypical (the potentially dangerous kind), etc. Probably all because my modest dose of oestrogen seems to freak out my uterus and it throws a fit unless it has a Mirena in it.
It's good that they're so thorough but remember that most of us don't discover we have really scary stuff going on.
It's tempting to want to hide, isn't it? I can remember fantasizing about just going under my desk at home and not coming out.

I didnt have the hystescopsy as the doctor said I had a small fibroid and I'd probably had it forever.but gosh he was a horrible doctor.i walked in and he said your probably here because your doctors said you might have cancer? I said yes and he smirked. Then said its just a fibroid said I didn't need to have it removed.then after chatting for a while he said well,I could do a procedure now if you'd like just to make sure?no mention of what it was but I'd had the ultra sound and scan.so I said no.he actually smirked again!!I really think he just wanted a poke around .so relieved though

Good news! Even if his bedside manner left a lot to be desired. What a way to start a consultation...

I have had two hysteroscopy procedures both under local anaesthesia and they were both uncomfortable but the second one was horrific, it left me bleeding for 8 weeks and an infection, I am waiting for another one currently but I’m not looking forward to it and was wondering if I could ask for a general anaesthetic.

I wouldn't just ask, I would insist, bearing in mind your pasr experiences. I hope you are over the infection now.

I was given a choice of LA or a light GA. I opted for LA, which was absolutely fine, but wished I’d gone with GA. The reason being that they found a polyp, but wouldn’t remove under LA, so I had to go back 2 weeks later for polypectomy under GA.
If I’d had the GA it would have all been sorted in the one visit.
Don’t worry, just relax, and if you’re anxious, ask if GA is an option.

I had a hysteroscopy last year. I had it on the NHS under general anaesthetic. They removed 2 polyps and a fibroid and the whole thing took approx 30 mins. I went back to work the next day. I wouldn’t have wanted it done under local anaesthetic especially when I saw all the students standing with the consultant!

I had one last autumn. Took paracetamol prior, no anaesthetic. Lovely nurses and v skilled doctor so no pain as such.
I’ve got three children though and it brought those memories back like nothing else I’ve experienced since!

We are all so different with pain thresholds. Ask for a general anaesthetic if you feel you can't cope. It probably won't be offered unless you ask. I did and it was the best thing for me.
