Tinnitus - mine is background probably continually though I often wonder how long B4 I notice  ::).  It seems to be behind my head, not inside.  ?? clear as mud ??

We have a thread somewhere about it.  Many people suffer due to having been exposed to loud music: raves, festivals, head phones ........ though a loss of oestrogen may also be a culprit.  The eustachian tubes may narrow which can cause it, also the body may become dry: inside and out.  My ears itch, deep down  >:( as do eyes, nostrils and scalp.

Some find that swapping the white noise with music can help.  Do you sing?

Hi all,
New to the forum, but hoping to get some advice or feedback from any of you who may have experienced really loud screeching tinnitus during menopaus.
I'm 48 years old and definitely menopausal, I'm on combined HRT and thought I was doing OK until about 3 months ago when almost overnight I began to get the most horrendous screeching head and tinnitus, along with ear pain both sides ( mild pain not chronic) pressure in my head, stabbing eye pain, a feeling of vibrations (can be all over or just face) followed by awful nausea. The tinnitus is there all the time and hardly ever let's up ( I can hardly remember what silence sounds like, and I really miss it 😢), but the other symptoms can come and go. Came off my HRT to see if this was the culprit but the screeching stayed the same, my BP is fine as well. Can I ask if anyone else is/has suffered with this, and did it go away. I'm 3 months solid in now with what seems no let up. I am on the waiting list for an MRI and to see EN&T.
Any advice or feedback from anyone would be amazing! X
Thank you

hi

I've recently started with white noise in one ear. I only notice when I'm sat alone watching TV. It's really annoying though. It started after I'd had a bad head cold and won't go

Hi Jules

I wonder if it would be worth going to your gp to see if your ear has any build up of wax or anything after your cold. It might be worth checking out x

hello - i realise this is an old post but just wondering how you got on with trying to work out your triggers with the tinnitus?  I'm having a similar thing just now.  Any advice?  xx

Hi Mantwab

I find that mindfulness exercises, and doing some cbt exercises help habituation to the sound. Once your brain realises that the noise isn't a threat then over time people do usually get 'used' to the noise.

There are lots of things that can help, there are sound therapys which can help mask the sound, I believe there are earpieces which can be worn which emit a sound just below the frequency of the tinnitus to aid habituation.

Tinnitus UK have some really good advice on their website x

Thanks discogirl - appreciate the reply.  i've just started some medidation ideas to focused on the tinnitus which i took from a book by Glenn Schweitzer - i'm going to keep tryng these as it's work in progress for me.  I've never been one to meditate but i actually enjoyed it.

Have you now habituated and if so, how long did it take and what kind of noises do you get.  Mine isn't your usual high pitched constant ringing so i worry I might not habituate the same.  Stupid theory probably.

Thanks again, really appreicate it. xx

Hi CrispyChick

Headspace and calm are really good apps,  you have to pay to access all of the content but there are lots of free sound therapy apps. Guided meditation and stuff you can usually find free on youtube and things x

Hi Mantwab,

I have the same book, rewiring tinnitus!

When I first got the tinnitus, I was so freaked out, however after about 4 - 5 months mine went, I just didn't hear it, then it came back but very quiet, after I stopped hrt in November of this year, my tinnitus returned so I hear it now, but still not mega loud.

So I've had to habituate again to it and to be honest although the noise is still there, it really doesn't bother me. I know its hard but if your brain sees the noise as a threat, it will keep monitoring it; best thing to do in the early days is to use sound during the day, a radio or whatever and at night, you can get loads of sound therapy for sleep online or you can even buy white noise machines cheap enough online to purchase and plug in.  I think you can buy special pillow speakers which I believe can emit a noise through your pillow but I didn't fancy using those just in case it spiked my tinnitus.

If your tinnitus fluctuates mine does as well, and with habituation the sound doesn't go away it's still there but it just doesn't bother you, just like the tick of a clock in your sitting room, if you focus on that sound, you will hear it but, it fades into the background when you're busy with other stuff.

Tinnitus UK are a really good website x

As I understand it there are lots of causes of tinnitus and often unknown. However, if it helps, for me it is caused by eustachian tube dysfunction and I can get rid of it by using either an over the counter nasal spray or a prescription nasal spray. I’ve also recently seen an audiologist who recommended trying Otovent balloon therapy (available on Amazon).
I should also mention that ETD has been a problem for me only in midlife and I’m convinced caused by perimenopause. I also get ferociously itchy deep inside my ears (can’t reach the itch), a stuffy nose in the morning during the luteal phase and I stopped producing any ear wax at all in my late thirties (having produced it normally my whole life).
Those are my experiences if they are helpful.
