Title: Undecided about mirena coil … advice please
Post by: Macbaby on January 30, 2023, 08:20:08 PM
I’’m new to the forum but would really appreciate some advice.
I’m 4 years post menopause and had a heavy  vaginal  bleed 10 days  after I decided to try the uterogestan 100 vaginally every other day. I had been experiencing painful lumpy  breasts and low mood , so thought I’d try changing from the oral method .
I was sent for a 2 week referral, and  today and the scan shows a 3cm ovarian  cyst , a small fibroid and a slightly thickened lining. After trying to obtain  a biopsy it was too painful so I’ve been referred for a hystoscopy under a GA. The consultant said that as I was under a GA I could have a mirena coil fitted and he could also remove my ovaries at the same time.
I’m quite taken aback, as I didn’t think he would suggest this , as he said the cyst does not have any of the 5 concerning features so he does not expect malignancy. I will get the CA125 blood results tomorrow.
I’m not sure whether I will have the coil as I’ve heard a lot or negative comments in the past, but opinions do seem to have moved to a more positive review on the coil these days .
I would have thought that removing ovaries would have been the last option  but the doctor said I wasn’t using them anymore!
I’m 57 and take 3 sprays of Lenzetto and 100mg of uterogestan and a pea size of  testogel 3 times a week.
I would love to hear some thoughts ..
Thank you

Welcome!  😊

You will hear a fair bit of negativity around the coil, but it stopped my bleeding on utrogestan dead. They are like Marmite, you either love or hate the mirena. It’s synthetic progestin, released locally into the womb. That doesn’t sit well with many women, who prefer a natural progesterone ( utrogestan ) Also, IF you wanted it out asap, you would have to wait. A skilled medic however, will fit quickly and painlessly.

Removing ovaries seems a bit drastic, but I can see the thinking behind it. One less thing to think about.

Good luck what ever you decide. Utrogestan does work well for many, but it’s not the best at controlling bleeding I don’t think .

Hi

I had a Mirena coil fitted 3 weeks ago (10yrs post meno).  Started HRT 11mths ago and then had some bleeding over Christmas so went to GP, she referred me and I had scan which showed slightly thickened endometrium so a hysteroscopy and biopsy was arranged and it was suggested I should have coil fitted at same time. I was not too sure at first, having had bad experience with a contraceptive coil back in the 80s but gynae oncology nurse assured me they're not the same these days! So I decided to go for it as it can always be removed if I don't get on with it.

Early days yet but I've had no discomfort, fitting was easy but I guess that was down to the effect of local anaesthetic for the biopsy and the skill of the Dr who inserted it.

There's lots to consider and we all have different experiences but, so far so good for me  :)

If you have any sort of progesterone intolerance then do not do it. I had to have mine removed after 6 months after negative symptoms did not improve (I was told they would). It was so awful I don’t know how I did it really. That said if you don’t have prog intolerance you should be fine. It’s all down to individual response and knowing your own body. Let us know what you decide and how you go on x

Hi, I had mine fitted on 9th January due to thickened lining and bleeding after being on continuous Utrogestan for 18months. Fitting was a little uncomfortable however other than a few cramps and spotting I’ve had no issues with it. I was worried about low mood which I know can come with it but so far so good. Remember we are all different and the coil is easily removed if it doesn’t suit you. Good luck in whatever you decide xx

Also, what you need to consider is, that low mood, bloating, mood swings etc, can occur with utrogestan. It’s not necessarily the ‘ gold standard’ progesterone that people like to make out. There are plenty of people who don’t get on with utrogestan as there are who don’t with the coil and vice versa.

Nothing is forever and a coil can be removed.

😀

I had a coil inserted when I was 56 for similar reasons. It has been brilliant and I wish I had had it inserted in my forties. A doctor tried to persuade me when I was having perimenopausal flooding.

I really don't know it's there and I'm on my second now. THe first one had to be replaced when it came out during a regular hysteroscopy.

Thank so much for the replies. After consideration, I have decided I will have the mirena coil fitted while under GA for the hysteroscopy, but will just review the cyst and not jump in to having my ovaries removed. I didn’t even know I had it until I had this recent scan , I have had no pain or discomfort from it , so will leave well alone for now .
As had been pointed out, I can always remove the coil if it doesn’t agree with me .

I had mine fitted in November, I am 49 and really wish I’d had it done years ago. No mood changes at all and no side effects or bleeding. I’d definitely get it fitted if you are “under” as it’s not the most pleasant experience and for me quite sore ;but I know friends who have had no pain with the insertion) . Px
