Hi I really don’t get on with utro orally and vaginally it gives me such urethral and bladder pain/ irritation.
I read a couple of old posts about people going to give analy a try…did anyone have any success?

hi zara69
i use utro vaginally however i have never heard of it being used as a suppository x

I don’t think it likely that many ladies have tried this route, but it is rather interesting.
Hopefully you’ll get some responses, but if not, it might be worth a trial of a day on and off or some other routine, and see how it pans out for you? Play it by ear really is what I’m suggesting.
Please do let us know how you get on if your try this approach x

Hi poppytoast..I’m not sure about vagifem anywhere other than vaginally as I always thought the oestrogen was placed very locally where it’s needed to plump up the vaginal walls and therefore strengthening bladder etc…but I stand to be corrected! Yes I agree that the back door is fine for lots of medications missing liver first pass etc just not sure about utrogestan this way…

This thread is from five years ago. https://www.menopausematters.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,37172.0.html I haven't read it all but you might find it helpful.

Thank you Taz2 x

If you find the answer please let us know. It can give me thrush when used vaginally so it's something I would try too.

Thank you Taz2 x
You're welcome

I asked the meno specialist I see and she said as we know any other way of taking utrogestan other than orally is off-label. But she said I could trial 100mg capsule rectally each night until I have a follow up in the new year. Obviously don’t do this without advice from a doctor. Now I have the go ahead I’m nervous to try it 🙄..but I will and I’ll update the thread

Zara rectal progesterone has been shown in some studies to be even better absorbed than vaginal which in turn is better absorbed than oral; rectal is also better tolerated by many so I would not worry at all about trying this, in fact it might be the best option for some.

I might try this. Normally take it vaginally but it does cause bladder pain and bloating.

That’s good to hear as I’m taking one utro vaginally and one orally till I get to speak to the Gp. I switched to continuous in august after taking vaginally sequentially. Gp had said vaginally was actually better for bleeding when I requested to do so in 2021, as I found it made me too dizzy orally.
In October a friend who’s a Gp mentioned that at some BMS training Dr Currie had said to take 200 on the higher patches which I think is a good idea as I’m not fully meno yet.

A quick update..100mg rectal every night for two weeks and so far so good. None of the side effects from metabolites when used orally and absolutely no bladder/urethral irritation like vaginal use..I can feel it’s doing something as my boobs ache and I was a bit weepy for a couple of days which has passed..a bit headachy but I have aura migraines anyway..no bleeding but I’ve had an ablation. I’m using a 50 patch but my oestrogen is low so if I’m settled with a decent amount of progesterone I will slowly increase my patch as long as migraines not aggravated. I’m hoping a conti regime will help with this.

Thanks for the update. I've used it orally this month but may try rectal next time. Will you keep us updated with amount if bleeding please? I o ly bleed about 1 in 3 cycles anyway and I wouldn't want it to be any less. Only 5 days into the course but so far I haven't had the sleep disruption I had with vaginal use, I wonder if it's because I'm getting a lower dose.

Hi Sheila99 I had a successful ablation 7 years ago and have never bled since not even when on hrt so I doubt I will now. Especially as 53 and using utro every night
-
Ah, I hadn't twigged you wouldn't bleed anyway (meno brain ::) ...)
