We took 5 lots to the auction last night and all sold! 2 items went for more than we expected, those were the ones we thought would come home again ;D
Going again on Sat with another load of boxes to sell ........ I am beginning to feel liberated already , now if I can pursuade Himself to get rid of that awful coffee set we keep hanging onto and sell those dagging shears we picked up somewhere ........... ???
-
Isn't it great CLKD? We sold an antique dining table and 6 ladder back chairs last year at auction, which were just too big for the room. The price we got was just OK when you think what a modern set would cost and this is vastly superior quality.
I've been de-cluttering room by room and have also sold loads on Ebay. I am afraid we are squirrels and we also have lots of hobbies so you "acquire" stuff. I am sitting in the spare room/office which I cleared and cleaned yesterday and it IS quite liberating.
-
When we moved we knew that if it didn't go in a Mercedes Sprinter Van and the back of our car, it wasn't going with us. It's amazing how much you hoard, especially in the attic. We did have to buy some items but flat pack Ikea beds travelled with us, mattresses, heaps of bedding in very useful vacuum down bags, mickywave, electrical and kitchen goods, clothes in vacuum down bags, computer and ..... the list goes on. When we got to Customs they opened the back of the van and said "Do you have any weapons"? to which we said "No", they saw that the van was stacked floor to ceiling, breathed a heavy sigh and closed the van. It was just too much of an effort to search......probably looking for illegal immigrants - NO ROOM !!
Enjoy the clearing out - it cleanses the soul and is very therapeautic and anyhow - there's not a lot else you can do in the cold and dreary winter !

I can't get to the auction room today 'cos of the snow >:( so the boxes will sit for another month ::) .... add to that 3 more I have sorted stuff into ;D .. haven't the energy for e-Bay, all that packing and sending is a step too far even for me!
-
Bobbles threw everything out or sold it
I have managed to keep the family stuff
We downsized to this house kept the most important things
Suzi Q
He never sells on Ebay but hes forever buying stuff on it
-
We went to an auction last night and handled a very pretty piece of Faberge which reached nearly £7,000 in the room. Also bought 2 lovely water colours for £20.00, couldn't frame them for that! Hubby now wandering round rooms saying 'where can I hang *these*? ' ;D
-
I thought I remembered you saying you were "decluttering" CLKD? ;D ;D
-
OOOOH! Auctions! I have a message on the whiteboard in the kitchen to contact the auctioneers this week. We're de-cluttering too. I hardly dare go to them tho, I have this uncontrollable finger! Most of my chests of drawers came that way, beautiful solid wood for less than Ikea flatpack!( my grandfather was a cabinet maker, so I reckon I get my love of wood from him) I sometimes wonder cos the Ikea stuff sells for almost as much as new at the auctions whereas the "brown" furniture goes for next to nothing. If I'm watching something on tv I'm generally looking at the furniture in the background!
I registered as a seller on ebay today, might as well try and keep the local post office open and try to make abit instead of buying!
-
Also rather than it going to the tip don't forget your local freecycle/freegle group ;-)
-
Off to auction on Saturday :) :) :) - so boxes everywhere ??? ::)
Have heard this morning of 'cheapcycle', similar idea to freegle but one can ask for money for items 8)
-
Went to Auction on Sat and only sold 3 Lots out of 10, however someone has come back to us asking about the jewellery we put into the Sale so maybe that will be 4 sold. Need to sort boxes over the weekend ready for the Sale in a couple of week's time 8)
-
So can you just turn up to your auction then?
-
Nope, 'Lots' have to be booked in with the organiser 2 weeks prior the sales so that they can be catalogued; I take the boxes over on the sale morning so that the organisers can put lot numbers on and stand them round the room. Viewing takes place so that the public can look at the catalogue and mark up what they fancy buying. Once the auction begins it is great fun, it's surprising what people will bid for: or not. I have bought several framed pictures this year but have run out of wall space that isn't directly in the sunshine ::) ......
-
3 auctions to attend this week :ola:
-
Cupcake - I didn't make myself clear, as a bidder you are able to view on the day of sale, get a bidding number and watch the Lots go and put your hand up if you are interested. A seller however needs to book stuff in so that it gets numbered and catalogued.
We had a look-see last night and will return this evening to bid for a couple of bits of jewellery ::) when I began this thread a year ago it was about decluttering ??? ....... ;D
-
We're off to auction again tomorrow, I have to take 9 Lots in the morning ready to sell in the evening. On Sunday we went to Woburn Hall for a 'fair' and bought 2 more lots of jewellery. On Thursday there's another auction locally .........
-
A year on and we're still de-cluttering. :) Have made at least 5 trips to charity shops recently with a boot full of clutter every time. Books, games, clothes, shoes, bric-a-brac etc. Hubby said "are you not doing a car boot this year?" I said "well, if you want all this stuff in your garage until about May, I'll do one!". He helped me load the car then! ;D ;D
Also made a couple of trips to textile bank with stuff that I felt was not good enough for charity shop. The very best stuff I have Ebayed (mainly successfully) and if it didn't sell then it's also gone to charity shop. I sold a lot of very good clothes, shoes, surplus hobby stuff, a few antiques, nice fabrics etc.
I am sticking to my rule of turfing something out if a newer version comes into our house.
-
Spring must be here!

The older I get the more I worry about what will happen to my stuff when I go. Who will clear the house etc and sell the good stuff? I live on my own with no family. Are there companies that will do that?
Bramble
-
Yep there are companies. The Auction people we go to arrange clearances, fairs, sales ...... I have got rid of everything which is of sentimental value and am selling jewellery during this year that I won't wear again as I have brought in more stuff. Something went for good money last night which I expected to bring home :whist: don't know what the buyer saw in it myself but hey ho! we also bought a small box of mixed jewellery and it's surprising what people throw away! ::)
Hubby is going to view another Sale this afternoon and there's a piece of furniture I have my eye on in Thursday's Auction .....
-
We've been at it again ::) - auction season is upon us ;D
-
I'd really like to go to one of these. OH would probably tie my hands behind my back ::)
How do you find out where they are? Is there a website for local ones ???
-
sale-room.com
look in your local papers
ask at the Library or do a 'google' for sale-rooms in your area - we have to register for a bidding number before each Sale, view the items pre-sale to make sure there is stuff we want to bid on; tick the catalogue or watch on-line at home on the computer. Fun ;D
-
now if I can pursuade Himself to get rid of that awful coffee set ?
Take it out for cleaning, oops it just smashed on the tiled floor, what a pity. Blame the dog

Hi, my first time on this section - CLKD - what have you found more succesful - Ebay, Auctions or car boot - that's if you have done all 3? I am having a massive sort of everything and feel in a big muddle but pleased to have started. I also have a lot of stuff from my children who are married but without storage facilities!! I am sure this happens to others?
Ebay has been quite good for me, although time consuming and high fees. I am hoping to do a car boot this weekend if the weather holds.
My daughter-in-law sells on facebook and does quite well, but I am a bit nervous - has anyone used this form of selling?
Happy de-cluttering to all. Purplenanny x x
-
I can't be bothered with e-Bay, too many problems with PayPal >:( and we are lucky to have a Town Hall close by which is under cover which is open every Friday but it's a early start ::). I did a car boot 2 weeks ago and it rained, not good when selling books, it was also too windy to keep jewellry on the tables :( ............ as we are selling books, e-Bay is too much Phaff - weighing, posting etc. as we haven't got books which are worth much, simply clearing the attic! Great fun though! so if anyone on here needs sci-fi gaps filled, I have lots of auto/biographies of 'famous' people, also a few 'stories' .........
-
I use eBay for designer clothes & CDs, but non-branded clothes and books go to Oxfam
I don't use eBay so much now, they've become really seller-unfriendly of late, with penalties & stroppy rules, as well as high fees. Turbolister used to be really good for listing items, but now it just doesn't work properly, and it's too time-consuming to list each item separately, even with a template.
-
We sell on ebay - never had a problem with Paypal - their policy is very strict and fair for the buyer and the seller.
As for ebay itself I'm kind of in agreement with TSF, they do seem to be more on the side of the buyer, but we have made quite a bit of cash with them so far, I don't mind doing the listings, I mean if you create the templates first, they are done in no time ;)
-
Some people have had problems in that the buyer offers the money via PayPal the once the goods have arrived they somehow 'snatch' it back >:( this has happened via other methods of payment at a local Auction House, even on credit cards recently .......... so make sure that the money has 'cleared' before sending the goods!
-
Of course CLKD I don't think anyone should post until the money has cleared - I always transfer it in my bank account first, then post. ;)
-
That seems sensible to me ;).
Today I bought a plate with ducks painted on by Sir Peter Scott and signed on the back; a small piece of Siam silver and 2 cups of tea ;-)
-
Oh bought some Starrett tools from a house clearance [I'd never heard of them] when he checked them out on ebay their selling for between £20 and £80 each tool! He has quite a few of them.
Obviously we will have to do some proper research before we put them in auction.
-
Auction houses in 'real' life have fees - handling, VAT and this is for both buyer and seller >:( except the people we deal through only charge when an item sells. Some are catalogue only entry ::) ........ most can be viewed on-line via the computer.
-
Hi two_sore_feet - thanks for info re using Ebay templates for selling, I will check it out as it take me ages to list things! Purplenanny x x
-
Off to Peterborough Fair on Sat. weather permitting :whist:
-
Oh see I've already posted what I was going to type this morning :o ::)
-
Oh dear CLKD! ??? Hope your weekend goes well - weather gorgeous! I am doing another car boot Sunday - must get rid of all this stuff cluttering my life!! Purplenanny x x
-
I'm also doing a car boot tomorrow, i have so much stuff and only a little car to take it in....have asked if anyone has a van that i could use..........no one has one. So i may now have to wait till next year to get rid of the rest of the stuff. not nay indoor car boots and i don't want to do one when its cold.
TM
-
well good luck with selling the stuff you can fit in TM - at least some of it will go - and your car should be cheaper to pitch than a van. Can't waste the good weather! Purplenanny x x
-
You will sell better from a car than a van! You will have to be more organised inside the vehicle and so long as you take a table to put stuff on and put any boxes on the floor where you can see them, all should be OK!
-
Hi TM - how did your sales go at the car booty!! I sold £27 and got baked in the process! Not sure I will bother again, lot of effort for little gain. Hope you did better. Purplenanny x x
-
Hi purplepenny,
i did not do a boot :( . by the time i had put the 2 pasteboards & small round clothes rail in my car there was hardly enough room for some of my boxes. My son is going to borrow a van if we get a nice wekend during October and we will do one together as we have about 12 boxes in all pus other bits and bobs. otherwise will keep it in the garage for next year.
I did go to the boot though,i bought a smallRadley bag fo £4 (bargain), a turquise & silver type necklace for £1 and a brand new medium size expandable red suitcas for £3. Mom brought 2 pairs of curtains for £2 each pair and a plant for £1.
I love car boots.
-
PHEW! what a scorcher: and we didn't see half of the Stalls because we didn't realise that 'more stalls this way' sign meant over 700 ! we did buy more silver though and met some lovely people :-) and on Friday we go to our usual haunt to sell more books!
-
wow - that was a HUGE booty if you missed 700!! I have loads of books but they never sell - where do you sell yours CLKD? I do agree the car booty is a great place for meeting people or even just watching them all milling around - I love it, just wish we had sold more. Hey ho. :sunny: :sunny: at least I topped up my vitamin D!!
-
Wasn't as much a car boot as an antique 'fair' and those snobbish enough know the difference ;D. We have plenty of outlets here in which to sell stuff but I prefer the indoor venues!
-
We did well selling books etc. yesterday :-* so are going again next week :cheer:
-
Well done CKLD,
i think i will have to wait till next year now to do my car boot.
TM
-
We've not done as well today although the hall was really busy ::) - off to auction tomorrow! [watch this Space ;D ]
-
The vide-greniers (car-boots) over here are rubbish - I took a heap of beautiful hand-made cards. All and sundry picked them up, man-handled them and guess what - SOLD ABSOLUTELY NOTHING !! The cards normally sell at around 1.45 (sorry no Pound Sterling or Euro symbol) so, I'm going to see about selling on the Internet. I'm going to clear out my collection of books and sell on E-bay too. Might make a few bob.
Meggie
-
Hi Meggie! We bought a new coffee/magazine table last week at the auction and did Very Well selling books and jewellry yesterday. We don't do e-Bay 'cos of the phaff with postage!
-
Off to sell our books and jewellry again tomorrow - watch this space! I bid on a lovely wall unit last week but was out-bid >:( - it ould have been useful for small items of silver to stand on!
-
I've been clearing stuff out and came across some clothes I've not work in 3 years - tried 'em on and they are back in the wardrobe - just trousers and loose tops.
Love sorting out old stuff - it's a cleansing.
Meggie
-
I try to keep tops and jeans/trousers together in the cupboards otherwise I forget what is where ::). Himself has found several Charles Horner thimbles recently, at cheap prices - we now need a frame on which to put those ........... I'm collecting signed pottery but can't remember the name right now :-\ as well as ugly mugs!
-
...................................as well as ugly mugs!
Are ugly mugs the same as Toby Jugs? 'scuse my iggorance !!
Meggie
-
Nope. They were made by the Pretty Ugly Mug factory in the mid-1970s. Now collector's items. [collectors' ?]
Toby Jugs had another history altogether.
-
I've seen the pretty ugly mugs on Ebay.
Taz x
-
I don't 'do' e-Bay. There are loads of designs not only mugs ::)
-
Some of them are really cheap but I expect they must be the common ones!
Taz x
-
The cheapest mug I have found is a fiver and that is un-marked on the bottom but is obviously from the factory. Upwards of £15+ for marked dependant on where I see them.
-
I found a pretty original painting of an exmoor pony in a gallery yesterday, by Nintette Butterworth, painted 1961. It is a head study and the eyes are vibrante and the ears pricked - I walked by it 3 times before deciding to buy it. The pony has a kind face.
So much for clearing out, we have sold some books recently: and have bought a couple of shelf units for displaying silver and pottery on, I have bought several pieces of 'radford' pottery since C.mas.
-
Spent yesterday at Peterborough Antiques Fair - with every one worrying about the weather ::)particularly the stlal holders.
Didn't buy much. Watched the BBC filming Bargain Hunt 'red' team. Didn't see the 'blues' anywhere .......... met lots of like-minded people. >sigh> tired today ::)
-
I've been sorting through cupboards since last month and managed without too much trouble, to fill 8 bags with clothes so have taken down to the "Relais" bins ...... Charity collection point. It's nice to be rid of stuff I/we've not worn in ages - wonder how long it will be before OH notices I've got rid of some of his stuff !
Meggie
-
;D - nice to see you up and about Meggie - snow all gone now?
DH would notice ........ I only threw something of his out on one occasion without discussion :o ::)
-
;D - nice to see you up and about Meggie - snow all gone now
Yes, snow all gone and sun has been shining - 37° yesterday but misty and light drizzle today.
Hope you OK
Meggie
-
Not too bad for a Thursday 8)
-
Spent a day in Lewes and another in Brighton last week - even went on the train between the 2 towns, a trip of 15/16 mins. but an achievement for me. Not busy PHEW! so we got seats, the streets were buzzing and looking Seasonal.
Bought a few items, met several nice people, saw the SEA :bounce: ............
-
We buy and sell. Usually a box of 'odds' for 1/2 things we want to keep, the rest has to be sold on. 2-day it was the United Schools Fair with Santa and everything ::)
-
. Watched the BBC filming Bargain Hunt 'red' team.
This programme annoys me when they are buying at stalls, fairs etc to then go and sell at auction - seems wrong way round like trade selling back to wholesale.

It seemed strange to friends who were 'down under' a few years ago to have a BarBQ on the beach ::)
Bargain Hunt is :-X : fun to watch being filmed ::) …… these programmes haven't done much for Dealers other than to make them approachable. But the public then try to get far and above reductions 'because they see it on TV'. However :-X ……..
It also doesn't do the Dealers any favours when it appears that they buy something at a large amount: remembering that the items have already been through auction at least once: to be sold in auction …..
Only 1 item that I have sold has ever gone way and above :) ……. everything else has either gone less/more than we would expect.
Yesterday - no panics :bounce:

Hadn't thought of the impact of the programme on the dealers - i've always haggled anyway even in shops if i can get away with it !
i used to go to auctions - not as a dealer - but it is always fun to watch them operate - someone there for everything and you get to know them - me being a woman i think they let me in once ;D to get a bedside cabinet at a reasonable price ! - i remember seeing one chap bidding on a couple of fold out garden chairs that didn't match at all being run up sky high by them - would have been cheaper to go to B&Q !

Usually dealers give 10% discount - we turn over tickets to see if there is a 'T' or 'N/T' on the back.

Well - it's that time of year when we put the antique fairs etc. on the calendar. Am watching a programme on BBC1 and apparently there is a centre on Loch Lomond - they are there, looking at stuff: but when we were in the area in September, we couldn't find it :( …….. anyone got a Yellow Pages ?

What are they called CLKD, maybe I can help as I'm headed that way in March.

:thank you: I will look to see if this programme is 'old'. They would, if still in business, be listed in Yellow Pages :) …… under antiques - Taz [nice to see you on board ;-) ] YPages is on line. We drove round a bit last year but didn't find them …...

Yep I have been there....they are next to Jenners. Unless you got out and walked because it's in a loch side development......no cars allowed. It's so pretty there.

Does anyone watch Sarah in the afternoon, she visits a Council tip and stops people dumping stuff which she takes away and gets recycled. Today there was a doll's house with furniture - Sarah has sold it on-line ........ but it should have gone to the Charity Shop, not a Council tip :bang: :bang: :bang: - people are so WASTEFUL and too lazy to take stuff to charity or Freecycle it :'(
-
Think some probably think that nobody will have use for the items. I have tried recycling big items like furniture to charity shops, but most are very fussy. One item of furniture was wooden living room unit, nobody wanted it, not even local authority place who give to those with very little. Ended up paying local authority to pick up. They crushed it!
-
British Heart Foundation and our local Air Ambulance aren't fussy ;)
I see it as lazy. Very few people fly tip ........ that dolls' house 2-day should have gone to Charity but at least it now has a home :-). At the very least offer it up on a free-pick it up for nowt site. Some of the things that are 'rescued' are almost brand new!
-
I have never heard of anyone having problems via 'freecycle' ..... also, we have 'vans going round and sometimes the strangest things are taken ::). Freecycle is a registered world wide orangsation so everyone is trackable ..... 'donttipthatnow' is the other one where things are given for nowt, buyer collects and because people are in contact, security isn't compromised. I have met people in car parks to hand over a rug making kit ::). I have put stuff on the side of the road 'free to good home' and it's not taken: put a sticker on 'for a tenner' and it's gone in minutes LOL!
Local Council is very tight on fly tippers . Our Council is very good with kerb side collections too.
Off to yet more fairs Friday., Sat., Sunday but the idea of 2 pieces out and 1 in ain't working ;D
-
CLKD can't believe you made a rug making kit sound dodgy ;D ;D
-
Afraid it was the British Heart Foundation CLKD. Only place we could find who take furniture here. Sofa was examined, one look at our unit was met with a resounding "No, Nobody wants them!" It was in excellent condition too, not cheap either. Broke my heart to hear it being crushed!
-
Just found this thread, that would have broken my heart too cubagirl, I can't bear waste! What about ebay, has anyone used that? We've got rid of the most ridiculous things on that and then just handed the money over to whatever charity we want. If you put it on at a low price anything seems to go. We even sold our old maple worktops on ebay to a carpenter who used them to make shelves in his kitchen. £50 to Save the Children!
-
Haven't time for e-bay or taking stuff to auction ::) and haven't had anything to offer up on Freegle lately.
We were going to give BHFoundation a lot of clothes and furniture. A white van arrived - I'm not convinced to this day that it was from the Charity - told us that the clothing had to be put into black bags and it certainly wasn't large enough to put the furniture in! Recently bereaved I was too tired to be bothered so sent the van driver on his way, empty. I think it must have been someone who was involved with collecting on behalf of that Charity who thought they were onto a fast buck. We took the clothing on hangers to the BHF shop in the town who were delighted as it was all freshly pressed. The furniture went to a couple who up-dated furniture then gave it to people on social .......
