Title: Nausea
Post by: Freda on July 12, 2022, 03:33:43 PM
Hi, I have been on HRT since age 27 now 59.  In the last 6 months I have 24 hr nausea, dizziness, fatigue, lack of concentration, memory is terrible.  I am on Evorel Conti for last 5 years approximately.  Wondering if anyone else has suffered this or is this indeed a side effect.  Doctor surgery are slow and give me medication to help with the nausea rather than trying to get to the cause of the problem.  I am at my wits end as this is impacting on work, home etc.

Hi it could be that you need more oestrogen. All of these are symptoms of low oestrogen. X

Hello Freda and welcome to the forum.

I developed nausea when I had been post meno for two years. I described it as morning sickness even though I hadn't had that  experience during my pregnancies. I was fifty four at the time and a GP friend confirmed that it was hormonal and said that  'I was about the right age for it'. I wasn't on HRT at the time and as I recall this symptom resolved on its own after about six months.

I agree that you may just need more oestrogen so a review of your HRT may be the way to go.

Take care and keep in posting.

Dotty, thanks  :)  I am my witts end with this. Doctor said they referred me to Menopausal clinic August 2021 - I phoned the clinic last week and they only received the referral from Doctor in MAY 22 - I am gutted  :(  there is an 11 month waiting list now.
Has anyone gone private to see a specialist? Any information would be appreciated x

Thank you Kathleen, I am looking into trying to go private as cannot go another 11 months feeling so bad.  I have had to leave work on several occasions due to nausea and appearing in a drunk state.  It is so embarrassing.  :'(

Hello again Freda.

It is appalling by that your meno clinic referral has been delayed for so long, no wonder you are thinking of going  private.

I have been with Newson Health for about eighteen months and initially I was told that they was a waiting list so I asked to be considered for any cancellations and I was given an appointment within weeks!

I hope that you manage to speak to an expert soon and wishing you well.

Hi Freda there are lots of private specialists around…some better than others and varying in cost.

I would suggest changing to a higher dose patch or gel with a separate progesterone.

I had horrendous nausea 24hrs a day. It went once I was on the correct dose of HRT. x

Thank you Kathleen and Dotty. I will look into private. Not sure if there are any recommendations on this Menopause Matters site. I'm in North of Scotland near Inverness, again thank you for replying, much appreciated 😊

You can have an email consultation with Dr Currie on here via menopause matters website. She is a well known and reputable Scottish consultant. x

Hopefully you will get into see a specialist soon. Just a thought though, many are suggesting that you need a higher dose of estrogen. That may be the case but I’d suggest keeping an open mind on that as you might actually need less estrogen now that you are well past meno. Nausea is a very common side effect of an estrogen dose that is too high. Our bodies stabilize and settle once we get past the fluctuating peri stage so it may well be that you’ll do better on a lower dose. I myself had nausea as the main debilitating side effect every time I have tried to increase my estrogen with the (incorrect) view that more estrogen must be better. Unfortunately the symptoms of too much estrogen can be similar to those of too low estrogen x

Thank you all for replies. I will look into the local private clinics, unfortunately most are hours away with me being in the Highlands Scotland. I started to see a very good doctor who was interested in menopausal but NHS took over the surgery and now you can only speak to a locum, which means no continuity of care. It's so frustrating  :'(
Thank you all again  :)

Is there a Nurse Practitioner in your Surgery who could help?

Hello again Freda.

I just wanted to add that Newson Health offer consultations via a system called Heydoc which  works in the same way as Zoom. I have been a patient of theirs for almost two years and all my appointments are conducted in this way.  I imagine that other clinics have similar arrangements so it is worth asking around.

I hope you get the right treatment soon and wishing you well.

Hi All,  i've started to struggle with constant nausea and from what you've all written above it may be oestrogen low.   Started half patch of 50 Everol yesterday as attempt to try to get HRT to work for me.   Fingers crossed....    I have acid reflux/GERD and at the same time as getting nausea this seems to have changed also..... may be better management of diet though.    Hope we will start to feel improved. x

It is so difficult to see a doctor or a practisioner nurse. They messed up my referral to the menopausal unit so instead of 11 months wait I've got 2 years  :'(
Kathleen thank you for that I will try and contact them I am open to any suggestions on how to get on top of this full stop does anybody else suffer from sore bones from the menopause?
Thank you all again

Yep.  As oestrogen levels drop muscles may become lax = aches and pains.  Have U tried an over the counter pain relief?

Acid reflux is common as we age, due to the above.  'hiatus hernia' should be investigated, have you been given treatment - I managed with Milk of Magnesia for years then developed an irritating reflux cough.  My GP gave me Omeprazolol which does help.

I don't know how GPs  are still not opening their surgeries to face2face appts.  We go via the receptionist on the 'phone, followed by a GP/Pharmacist and a Surgery invite if necessary.

Hi CLKD,  I've had all the tests, scans and scopes and all normal.   Tried the medications e.g. omeprazolol (and other PPIs) but made me very unwell so manage it with diet and gaviscon.   I seem to absorb (even Vagifem!!) easily.  I'm on second half patch of Everol 50 - was ok earlier this week  but bit of anxiety is creeping in which I had under control; not sure if shedding more hair; general malaise feeling; very tired and could drop off standing up to be honest; increased thick headedness.   But we have had the heatwave which made me feel rubbish anyway.  So not one of those women who gets the miracle effect unfortunately.   Will stick with it and monitor.
