we’ve always had carpet in our lounge. It is about 20ft long by 15ft wide with large patio doors on to the garden so I suppose you could say it gets quite heavy usage. the present carpet must be about 15 years old and was very good quality and it is only the area where we tread the most (from hall, across room towards patio doors) that looks worn. The rest is absolutely fine.
hubby always fancied a wood floor but I said no to that as we had dogs and I didn’t want them slipping on it. We are now dogless so have a bit more choice.
I guess the options are carpet, wood or that posh vinyl. i can’t just put a rug over the worn part because it wouldn’t look right.
Any suggestions welcome.

I've been thinking along similar lines for 5 years ::). The carpet has been down since 2004. DH cleans it every 18 months or so. Takes about 3 days to dry completely. Also we have stuff to move!
We had Kardeen (sp) in the hall which we are pleased with. Whether we could match the colours :-\. My idea is to put wood throughout the ground floor other than utility room and downstairs cloakroom which may require replacing more often.
MayB find a supplier that would lend you various colours and types of wood/vinyl to lay down to see what you fancy? We have Rhino-vinyl in the utility and kitchen which have worn well.

If you go for wood I wouldn’t advise laminate. It soon begins to wear.
Another option would be large tiles. Have a look on Pinterest, they have some great ideas.

What ever, the floor will need to be screed to make it even enough to fit snugly or what you choose may 'lift'.

We inherited some absolutely hideous fake wood flooring. It took the dog a week to pretty much destroy it which actually improved it's appearance ;D It's now functional should accidents occur, but if I have the chance I'm getting carpet. It may be harder to clean but I think it will look nicer and warmer too.

thanks so much all! Hubby dug out receipts and carpet is 17 years old.
Apart from the worn area the rest is excellent so it was worth the money.
I think we are veering towards carpet again.
One friend’s son in law laid a laminate floor for her and it has started lifting in places. Another friend has had to have her whole new wood floor taken up and replaced after similar problems. The firm who did it said it wasn’t their fault, the materials were faulty.
We want to get it done now as we can put all the furniture etc outside on the lawn while the weather is good. There is simply not enough room in the hall and kitchen to put everything.
-
That's R problem too ::)
MayB the floors weren't screeded B4 laying the wooden flooring, an uneven level will allow lifting and it wouldn't by >faulty materials< - the buck stops with the fitter!

I think we are veering towards carpet again.
A neighbour has some pretty thick cord carpet laid everywhere with softer rugs in areas like living room etc. It looks chunky but practical. I think i would consider that if we changed carpet as it is hardwearing. No idea what it is like to hoover though.
-
Or to walk on with bare feet and cord sometimes traps dirt between the cords :-\

Have a look at Karndean before you make a decision. We have some in a rental property (I didn't buy it, it costs a fortune) and I'm impressed with it. It's very much tougher and more practical than wood flooring. To look at it you can't tell it isn't wood.
-
We are pleased with our hall 'karndean' ;)

Personally I prefer carpet for a living room though, I think it really comes down to personal preference. If you use laminate make sure you use an expert fitter as many problems are caused by incorrect fitting.

Our lounge has a lot of furniture = the possibility of carpet moth which is why I want to put wooden flooring down. Am in the process of sorting stuff so that we can move said furniture ::)
I would like wooden flooring in the bedrooms but that will depend on how good the floor boards might be, house built 1968.

We’ve got Karndean wood effect strip flooring in our hall. The floor does have an uneven bump, which would cost a lot to rectify, but the floorlaying people were very careful and there isn’t a problem. The reason for replacing the carpet originally was because we had neighbours who allowed their dogs to roam and poo everywhere, causing people to fence in their gardens etc. It was too easy not to check your shoes, particularly the children. Fortunately these neighbours have gone. But I love the flooring and want to replace the carpet in the lounge with similar if we don’t move. I went to an appointment recently and complimented them on the new wood floor, which turned out to be vinyl and not hugely expensive. Lots of choices out there now. I would have wood or wood effect flooring throughout the house if I could afford it.

The carpet on our stairs and the second floor is due for a replacement after 20 odd years. We were also considering laminate, which looks exactly like hardwood but a lot less work to install. It's durable and easy to clean. Replacing the carpet with new may be less expensive but 3 out of the 4 that live in the house have allergies (I'm the fortunate one lol) and hardwood and laminate are less likely to harbour allergens. On the negative, a hard floor upstairs isn't exactly cozy in the bedrooms and the carpet does absorb sound. We are still considering our options and now that we are expecting a furball soon, we may have to postpone for a while.
-
I'd wait at least a year with a new Furbaby due ;-)

Just ordered carpet. 100% wool, moth proofed and it’s colour is Coffee and Cream.Textured.
I love it!
we are booked in for mid Sept but if they get a cancellation they will contact us.
The shop does all sorts of floorings as well as carpets so we had a massive choice.

>tick<.
We have been to our family owned local upholstering shop this morning as well as taking chair seats: (1945 Packmac ) for recovering. We are on a roll ::)
These seats were recovered successfully - look great and are easy to clean ;)

Eventually we bit the bullet and had Karndean wood-effect throughout the ground floor: about 18 months ago. All that sorting of books etc. :o 8). Pleased with the results.
Now we need to find environmentally friendly cork tiles - we have them in the porch: which gets a lot of foot fall and have lasted really well and have at times due to plants over wintering there, been splashed with water: as well as the downstairs cloakroom - fancy same in our bathroom. ;). The Company from whom we purchased those from seems to be out of business so will be searching for other companies - any ideas Girls? DH can fit them as the areas are quite small.
Pity that I didn't think about cork tiles in the utility room B4 buying a new chest and upright/fridge freezer, having had the grand turn out recently ::)
