There is probably a thread already re music etc. But I thought I would start this one.
I had a patient in the other day who regretted not ever going to a festival or music concert before. I told them it is not too late and told her about my experiences.
I have been to Glastonbury and although hated the lack of decent toilet facilities, I have never experienced anything so magical before and look forward to doing this again one day, I have been to lots of music concerts over the years too. Have not been happy not to have gone for nearly two years but will start again soon.
I would love to hear others experiences of festivals and concerts, good and bad, 😄 funny too!
Music makes me feel happier and is a great stress release no matter what it is you are listening too. I wish there were more music programmes on T.V , used to love TOTP’s and The Word and The Tube.
Love Q.O.R . XXX

I went to my first music concert in my late fifties. Our eldest son bought me tickets for a birthday and myself and my husband went to see Santana at Wembley Arena. It was absolutely fantastic.
A man and his teenage son were sitting next to us. The son made it quite clear he was there under sufferance and was very grumpy. By the time the show was halfway through, he was standing up, appluding and sing. Dad looked very chuffed.
-
HaHa Aprilflower, that was me when I had to take my DD,s to see The Wanted I was the only one sitting until half way through! Love Santana and Carlos Santana is married to the brilliant female drummer Cindy Santana Blackman from Lenny Kravitz’s band. X
My first concert was Tears For Fears, I was 14 and loved it!
-
;D. oh good thread :-))))
Discos until I was married. An early theatre concert seen together (our 2/3rd date? ) whilst at Further Ed College in 1970, with I think Deep Purple supporting Lindisfarne . B4 either became popular. Later we saw The Hollies, Lindisfarne several times (The Hollies are on their 60th Tour this year ;-) ). Tina Turner on her 1st come-back door, inside.
DH liked Steeleye Span: connected to Ashley Hutchins and Ralph McTell as well as local musicians. Albion Band, Simon Care, John Kirkpatrick .....
Then someone introduced us to Fairport Convention. Followed by every combination/which way as the various amalgamations left, met up, wrote more songs, left ...... There is a huge FC 'family tree' somewhere and we have seen them all; either inside or at festivals in the field.
Glastonbury would never be my choice but my sister and her husband have been involved with the totem pole - choosing the tree, transporting it to the site B4 carving it during the week - for many years.
Festivals are becoming pricey unless 1 is tolerant of the lesser bands offered to the public. MayB try a day out first?
The things to take to a festival are: torches and warm clothes for night time; lots of sun cream; loo rolls; SheeWe; plenty of small meals with drinks so that excitement doesn't deplete blood sugar levels (my problem :'( ); we spent 1 weekend at Cropredy sitting in/under clear plastic bags, DH had a filing cabinet delivered to work and the plastic bag was really, really handy, as was the fishing umbrella. ;D. Plus blankets. We didn't stay over as we live close enough to be home in our bath and bed ;-).
My dog would sleep under the chair that I sat on. It was covered with a clear plastic bag over the whole chair so that she couldn't escape or be nicked from underneath! On a thick blanket she was fine.
MayB make a list of musical interests first then look at the bands' websites to see how local they might be? How big the Festival might be with regards attendees. If staying over, best to book really really early!
Lots of Festivals can be viewed on line via public photos or the bands' own videos or photos. on their websites. What does your patient fancy? Music unites. Music heals.
-
WOW CLKD , I am jealous you have seen Deep Purple and Tina Turner. I think my patient was put off by the mud stories etc😊
You are right festivals are becoming pricey but I would recommend if you love music to try to go as you cannot really explain what it is like unless you are there..
I have been to loads of concerts, too many to list but my favs are Rolling Stones , U2 Joshua tree,
Metallica, Black Sabbath, Robert Plant ( never got to see Led Zepp 😢), Kings Of Keon, Prodigy ( although my hearing has never been the same but it was fun). Depeche Mode .
Worst , although I love them was AC/DC, the music was distorted so in pain with ears.
I agree music does unite❤️

My ex used to work for a record company, so we used to go to gigs every night. Saw lots of new bands before they made it big - was in the room when the Manic Street Preachers signed their deal, blagged our way into the Brits after party twice, this was back in the 80s when it was a proper do at Grosvenor House hotel in London.
Went to Glastonbury in the 80s, that was when you could park fairly close to the stages so we slept in the car.
I do miss it, but me & my hubby have such different tastes in music we cant agree on bands to see now!
-
Saw Genesis before they were really famous at the local Tech college. Moody Blues while at college. Hot Chocolate, ELO, Mud, Magna Carta all came to my college. After, saw Moody Blues several times, John Denver, Ralph McTell, the Seekers, Dire Straits, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Missed out seeing Simon and Garfunkel as I was very, very pregnant and not up to standing in a crowd at Wembley Statium. DH went though, not fair! Listened to Elton John on DHs phone as he was duty as a police sergeant at an outdoor concert and he got paid!
IBS and the loos at Glastonbury are not a good mix, so haven’t been to a festival.

Immodium works well for some. It does for me. All of my young festival friends have it on their essentials lists ;D
-
Oh to have seen The Moody Blues :-*
Ralph McTell on stage. Shall I fire up the charabanc ;D

Every weekend was wonderful in the 70s. There was a Pavilion about 14 miles from where I lived and it had top groups on every Saturday night. It was packed to the rafters (no H and S then) everybody got drunk or stoned and it was so popular that FREE coaches were laid on from towns in every direction.
I saw Status Quo, Suzi Quatro, Slade, Canned Heat, Linda Lewis, Picketty Witch, Sweet, Four Tops, Marmalade, Thin Lizzy, Hot Chocolate …. And that’s just those I remember off the top of my head.
They were the best times and when I speak to younger people about those days they are envious because they have to travel the country to see their bands now. We were so lucky!
-
There was Corn Exchange in King's Lynn as well as a large hall in Boston, Lincs. Or the Cambridge Exchange and travelling to Norwich. But it meant having someone with a car ::) and we couldn't afford those.
Tina Turner was superb, all leg up to her waist ;D and could that woman sing!
Don McLean was a disappointment, he looked as though he wanted to be elsewhere and didn't acknowledge his backing group at all. So he went off our list of singers to pay money for.
At many Festivals there are off field activities for kids as well as Police, first Aid and Samaritans close by. Beer tents, all kinds of foods and crafts so take plenty of money in a waist bag ......... as well as records to browse through. Some are like a village!

I think I know where you were! Great times!

Showing my age here, but in 1963 I saw both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones on the same bill at the Albert Hall. I had seen the Beatles once before, but not the Stones. My friend and I immediately preferred the Stones, who made the Mop Tops look so tame ;D

Some of these bands' names are vague in my memory bank ;)

I think my brother went to this. I was only 9 at the time. Wasn't it called Pop Prom or something similar? He talked about it for years!
-
I can't remember what it was called now, not after nearly 60 years!! I must have been 13.

My OH went to the Isle of Wight Pop Festival and saw Jimi Hendrix. Him and his mate hitched from the East Midlands and their last lift was on a dustbin lorry! He loves telling that tale. 🤣🤣
-
Ha,I think my first concert was Kid Creole and the Coconuts ;D remember them, also have seen David Bowie, many times and Prince loads of times too, great memories,Take that,Coldplay,Gary Numan ;D Maybe I should stop there before it declines further ::)
-
Wow Kid Creole and the Coconuts? I saw them eons ago and really enjoyed their show. I also saw David Bowie in Toronto during the Serious Moonlight tour. I've also seen Genesis twice, Duran Duran, Hall and Oates, Robert Palmer, Platnium Blonde and I am still kicking myself for not getting tickets for Depeche Mode before the pandemic. ::)
-
Oh yes C.C Kid Creole was fab and Bowie? Well, you just can't fault him, nobody will ever be like him 🥰
-
I've watched the run-in for tomorrow's massive Event, including getting together choirs from all over the UK. They rehearsed in Windsor Great Hall [I think]. ::)
FabULUS! Including Rose getting everyone to sign - taking inspiration from the quiet gap in her duet with Giovanni in Strictly. Hopefully the weather will be fine on Sunday ...... hoopefully every1 will be in Good Voice.
-
Saw the oldies, Tavares, Stylistics , Four Tops, and loads more.
Saw Simlpy Red twice,
Saw Bowie too.
Seeing Madonna in October.
And Peter Kay next year. ( I know he's not a musician) 🤭
-
I thoroughly enjoyed the Coronation Concert. Was a real variety show - something for everyone.
Poor Camilla reminded me of Theresa May when jigging along to Take That :parti:
"Never Forget" is always a winner
-
Good song though that is Songbird isn't it?
Good old Lionel got everyone moving. 🙂💃🕺
-
It’s a great song Jill.
Lionel’s good for 73, I have to say. And the orchestra did a cracking job backing the singers 👍.
I wonder why Elton John knocked the gig back 🤔
-
Because it was about the Royals and public rather than himself?
Such organisation to get all that together on time! The orchestra did well 8) all that rehearsal time!!! Though I couldn't hear all the words, mayB it was pointed at the 20,000 audience? How did Katy Perry carry that dress without 'falling out' :o ?
-
Tape CLKD. Probably dressing making tape holding it in place.
-
DH thought 'stays', rods under the bust and up the ribs. She didn't look phased!
-
There was probably a whole lot of scaffolding under that dress. ;D
Totally gorgeous though isn't she. ?
Apparently she's a lovely person too. 🙂
-
How many of U had music as part of your school education?
Apparently schools are going to be allowed an hour a week - well that wouldn't have got my clarinet warmed up! As well as a lack of music teachers. We had peripatetic teachers too.
-
I had one to one piano lessons in primary school and the same with guitar in secondary school but obviously needed to own the instruments.
-
Our Authority had instruments available although I had a recorder and clarinet when it was recognised that I would stick to practicing ::)
-
I wish I'd stuck to piano lessons, when I hear a great pianist, I always feel disappointed in myself that I didn't keep it up,I was actually ok,played until about the age of 18 but then the nightclubs beckoned lol
The clarinet was what I originally wanted to play but my mum couldn't afford one but we owned a piano so........
-
I HATED practice, Mum would call me inside when we were playing a good game in the garden >:(
-
I had a piano teacher come to the house every Tuesday after school,in the end I dreaded it too,so that was that :o
-
I had a recorder, ;D
I ran around the house blowing all kinds of crap! 🤦♀️
My dad would say. TAKE THAT BLOODY THING OFF HER WILL YOU!! :beat:
-
I was part of the 1st recorder group in Primary Schools in the 1960s. That led to clarinet.
-
You still do that to this day Jill, you just don't need the recorder ;D
-
Well. Yeah.
-
Many are closing prematurely or 2024 will be the last year for many due to rising costs :-\
-
I went to Reading Festival a few years back and absolutely loved the whole atmosphere, even though I’m not much for camping in the mud. It rained so much my trainers never recovered, but I still think about those nights dancing in a field with friends and hearing my favorite bands live. My worst concert was probably indoors, surprisingly, a local venue with terrible sound so you couldn’t make out any lyrics, just bass thumping in your chest.
What’s funny is these days I’ve actually started making some tracks myself just for fun, experimenting with different genres using an ai music generator (https://soundraw.io/). It’s a cool way to create festival vibes at home when I can’t make it out to gigs.
-
I miss going to gigs but if I wasn't in the front row,it wasn't worth going for me. Best gig,Prince & Bowie oh and the chemical brothers were phenomenal
-
It was the Isle of Wight at the weekend :o and Glasto begins on Friday - apparently ;D bound to rain then ?
-

I watched some of it on TV. Stereophonics took me back a bit!
-
Better on TV Taz2 than actually being in that hot, sweaty, noise ;D
-
You can't beat being at a live festival but the cost puts us off nowadays. :(
Taz x
-
I think that many have out-priced themselves in recent years. Fairport went from a Friday night, Sat afternoon/evening weekend in August to starting on Thursdays - now they suggest that it's becoming too expensive to put on. Well mayB cut back to Friday/Sat.? We stopped going in 1990 because every1 around us were talking above the music so it became a waste of money >:(. Then anxiety struck so I can't do it these days :'(

Did you enjoy Madonna
-
Love live music, used to go to loads when i was younger, after work, Madonna was my first in 87 now seeher 11 times, Also in my mind i was luck to see MJ, been to U2, bon jovi many times too, and and endless line of 80 synth and 90 brit pop with DH. But i can not get him out the house now a days he is a tv addict. I hope to go to Marti pellow in oct. Did Glasto twice once terrible mud (98 and then 99 robbie, blur, pulp, rem, lenny kravic, skunk anasie, also reading oasis, placebo, were amazing. Did try for oasis tix but sadly no. Even sat on the sofa my arm are in the air swaying and punching away and singing along.
-
Wish I'd seen Blondie, used to love them.
Apart from Prince and Bowie I've seen Gary Numan 😂 kid Creole, Robert Palmer,INXS, basement Jaxx, chemical brothers, take that, James Brown,Coldplay,Keane,Lighthouse family and MANY more ,geeze I was busy back in the day ;D
-
 I kind of know most of those names. :-\
-
I’ve been to a lot of concerts, but my first real festival was Reading back in the early 2000s and nothing really prepares you for the mix of awesome live music and total chaos. My friends and I camped out, lost a tent to a heavy rain, and probably ate way too many food truck burgers. But singing along with a huge crowd is one of the best feelings.
It can definitely get expensive, especially these days, I've noticed ticket prices keep going up every season. I usually end up searching different sites to find better deals or last-minute resale tickets. If anyone’s looking for big acts like Oasis, there are sites that specialize in Oasis tickets (https://www.seatpin.com/oasis-tickets) even if the original sales are sold out, so that’s been a useful trick for me.
-
Reading = mud. Glasto = mud.
2 weeks until Fairport Reunion at Cropredy :-* 8)
-
Cropredy = mud? ;D
-
We've sat there in all weathers other than snow, haven't been since 1990 due to anxiety . Don't remember mud !
-
It's just you said Glasto mud and Reading mud so I thought that Cropredy might have also been mud 😂
-
;D
Not in my memory. We sat under a large fishing brolley 1 year against the sun and heavy showers, the following Festival a lot of people brought them.
-
I’ve seen Debbie Harry and Then Jericho at the UEA . Crowded House and Dire Straits at Wembley ( sat behind Jimmy Nail blast he’s tall). Seen lots of tours of old bands such as The Hollies, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Searchers, Freddy and the Dreamers, and Gene Pitney all at The Norwoodrooms. But my best band is MUSE. Seen then at Wembley, The Emirates stadium, The O2 and Milton Keynes bowl. Been a fan for a loooong time and I love them. Also love organists Anna Lapwood and Loreto Aramundi. Met OH when he was the lightin and sound man for a local rock band called Thus Way Up in the 90’s. Our daughter is an organist too. My dad is in his 80’s and still regularly sings on open mic nights, as does my sister. My mum is 84 and she plays tambourine and sings ‘Your pants are on fire’ to Kings of Leon.
-
That's a great update :thankyou:
-
Used to go to many many live gigs and festivals, put perimenopause has put paid to that, my anxiety in big crowds now spoils it for me (plus these days all the vaping)
We went so often that I've seen most heavy rock and metal, been lucky enough to see a big proportion of 80s big names over the years, ACDC, Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Kiss, Bon Jovi, Saxon, Helloween, Poison, Judas Preist, Black Sabbath, too many to name.
Lots of festivals including Download, many other smaller festivals. Loved them.
Also seen a few of the New Country stars in America.
Last gig was Bruce Springsteen last year saw him twice - in London and Sunderland,
I won't ever go to a big venue again sadly.
-
Funny Bruce was the last big gig I went to.
Although do go to local stuff....saw Paddy McGuinness last year.
Never heard Bon Jovi live....but have seen him in person. Stayed in the same hotel on my honeymoon. Could not understand why there were always girls outside hotel and we stayed on top floor and a guard was outside lift. Seem he was in the suite lower down.....just remember a wave and a smile, and that he was not very tall :)
But in the past Chicago, Carpenters. The Bee Gees, Hollies, The Who Status Quo Kinks and David Bowie. Meatloaf and James I think old timers is kicking because I have gone black...then of course Brucie a few times.

Wow that's AMAZING!!! You must have been in fabulous hotel! :D And YOU were in the better suite too! Cool!!! :D
Tempted by Bruce on his new tour but nah, cannot face it.
These days happy watching a full concert at home with a little drinkie. Last one we saw was Kenny Chesney at the Sphere in Las Vegas! (Kenny Chesney = huge huge huge country music star in America, apologies if you HAVE heard of him :) )
-
Clovie it was an unexpected up grade due to being on honeymoon......something tells me it wouldn't happen now days.
Yep I have heard of Kenny Chesney....just remembered I saw Reba McEntire in Manchester - what a voice country gal who's Great Grand dad was from Macclesfield.
-
Yay! Someone who knows who Kenny Chesney is!!
and, I did not know that about Reba McEntyre!
-
I enjoy watching the festivals on the TV but I'm not a fan of crowds and when I see 100,000 + people lumped together my first thought is .....where are the loos and will I ever find my husband again when I go :-\. I would just panic in the middle of all those people - wish it wasn't the case.
-
Have seen ABC with orchestra several times (Lexicon of Love) and it gives me goosebumps. Love it. Prefer a smaller indoor concert to the stadiums.
