Hi all,
I hope this isn't a silly question! I have noticed lately that if I eat say a piece of cake, I feel quite rough two or three hours later - it feels a bit like anxiety/ bit shaky and then if I eat something else say a banana I feel much better. Pretty sure not diabetic as had quite a big check up not that long ago. But wondered if this was a thing post menopause? So I'm guessing I need to only eat things with a high glycaemic index or is it the other way round - whichever is the healthy one!

I had to cut out shop bought cake etc., I have had similar feelings. I concluded recently that it's the fats which slow down my digestive system and having cut out most cake, feel a lot better. However, I do miss my piece of cake mid-morning when DH and I are out and about. Coffee causes the same feelings until I feel really
sick
4 me low blood sugar is sudden when my body is hungry. Intense nausea followed by wooziness and a need to eat. I try to eat B4 these feelings start. Slow release foods: bananas, dried fruits and nuts, muesli , porridge ............. little and often.

Hi. Yes this definitely sounds like something to do with blood sugar. It happens to me too in exactly the way you’ve described. I think it’s to do with the blood sugar spiking after the cake and then plummeting quickly. I feel shaky, heart beats faster, nausea and anxiety.
I saw a nutritionist last week and I’ve cut out as much sugar as possible and am eating more regularly. I must say I’ve seen an improvement in mood over the past few days.
A nice snack is medjool dates kept in the freezer, they don’t freeze entirely and are lovely and sticky. I know fruit has sugars but the body processes it differently and it doesn’t give me the highs and lows.
I also get the intense hunger and nausea same as CLKD. But that’s when I haven’t eaten for a long time.
The nutritionist also said that insulin has a big impact on our hormones so another lovely meno pitfall!
I loved my bit of cake at the weekend with a cup of tea! Might experiment with sugar free recipes.
Xxx

Dates, well remembered. We buy in bulk from 'Costco ' and these are DH's go too when peckish. As are dried apricots and figs. :-X ;D

Thank you both! Frozen dates, what a good idea. Yes I imagine if you eat something like a date the fibre within maybe slows down the absorption of sugar - something like that anyway. I guess I should feel happy that the thing that doesn't suit me ie fast sugar shouldn't really be consumed anyway haha.

Hello Gnatty.
You said that you were investigated for diabetes recently but could you be pre diabetic now?
I am not sure what the treatment is but perhaps your GP can advise you so that you make the right decisions and avoid the condition getting worse.
Wishing you well.

I think it would be unlikely as I am only about 8 and a half stone, 5 foot five. But will give it some thought!

I've been border line diabetic since 1991.
This afternoon I had a sudden drop, shaky - I was making our bed and couldn't put a pillow into a case >:(. Early meal of chicken curry on rice.
