Title: Additional progesterone for CONTRACEPTION
Post by: Nicola Winter on January 04, 2022, 02:07:51 PM
Is anyone else taking oestrogel 2 pumps daily, with Ustrogen vaginally 200mg for 2 weeks on 2 weeks off plus Cerazette or another Progesterone only pill? I'm 47, I'd like to know why I need the ustrogen if I'm taking cerazette as well? I'm on week 4, I have had spotting for most of the 2 weeks without ustrogen, broken out in spots, been rediculously bloated with a dodgy tummy and a dull headache. I'll persevere to see if things settle, but I'm thinking maybe it's the cerazette that is the problem. My husband is on the list for a vasectomy.

Don't stop contraception for at least 3 months after his op.!  ;)

MayB put the names of the products into the search box to see what pops up ?

It sounds like a strange combination. You might be better either on a contraceptive pill that contains oestrogen too, or else oestrogen with a mirena to provide both contraception and the progesterone part of hrt.
Presumably the oestrogen is for meno symptoms but I have no idea why you'd use utro and cezarette

The oestrogen and ustrogen are for perimenopause. The Cerazette is for contraception but it seems like alot of progesterone.

It is because you need contraception and endometrial protection. Cerazette is only licensed for contraception and not for endometrial protection, shame as it probably thins the lining quite well, but they have not done the expensive trials.

I think there are better solutions. As you say far too much prog. The withdrawal from utro that causes the bleed may not work as you're still taking prog.

Hi Nicola Winter

As sheila99 says - why not try one of the contraceptive pills designed for peri-menopause? These contain estradiol the same as in HRT. There are two - one called QLAIRA and the other called ZOELY. Qlaira I think has the higher dose and varies the oestrogen throughout the month. So basically you are having HRT and contraception all at once in the one product. They are designed to carry women over the difficult peri-menopause time when you still need contraception because they suppress the cycle but still give you oestrogen, but eventually suppress the severe hormonal fluctuations of peri-menopause.

Great information regarding the combined contraceptive pill with estradiol for HRT. I will definitely ask my GP about those options. Thank you so much. I wonder if there are other people in the same situation?

I'm waiting for a call back today from GP about starting contraception along side of my HRT because of my heavy bleeding (plus contraception a bonus, condoms ruin the moment ;)) Im 50 this year so I dont think she will let me have the combined pill, I was hoping to try Zoely but not sure its safe for 50 and over. I dont want Mirena either.

Interested in this thread too. Am 52,currently taking cerazette and perimenopausal. I've come across a number of women who are on the OP regime. A menopause specialist prescribed same for me but am considering waiting until post  menopause when can take 100mg utrogeston nightly (I don't want the fluctuations with a cyclical regime). The only thing I'd say is that if the side effects are from the cerazette, give it a chance. I had spotting at the start too and settled. (Although in the past year it's come back again) . I'm no help really, sorry 😃

Nicola try putting the product name in the search box. There's been a thread on one of them when some people tried it but I can't remember which one it was.

More great responses, thanks everyone. I'm back on my first week of 2 with vaginally uterogestan along with the daily mini pill. I've broken out in acne again, I'm super bloated and I can't think straight for toffee. There are mistakes in all my work, I'm getting dates and arrangements all mixed up. I'm not stressed about it which is unusual, but I'm really lethargic so I'm almost too tired to stress. Really out of character for me. My GP isn't very clued up. I guess I'll persevere for a full three months to see if things settle. I'm so tempted to ditch one or other of the progesterone products or do the uterogestan every other day.

Perhaps it would be better to change to one of the pills that does both jobs? I get fatigue on utro (common side effect) but it's so much worse when my body is producing it too (sequi regime) when I presumably have too much. If you ditch the utro you need to be sure cezarette has enough prog to protect your lining with the added oestrogen, I suspect it won't but I don't know.

My insomnia is slightly better I think, my stuffy nose is a bit better too and the headache I've had, nearly all the time in my left temple for the past 2 years has abated, so maybe I should count my blessings. It does just seem, from reading lots of posts on here, that we all swap one lot of naff symptoms for another.
