Title: Is it harmful to 'have breaks' from HRT?
Post by: Noheroicsplease on December 14, 2021, 07:05:24 PM
Hello,

I'd like to take a break from HRT to see whether its causing my awful hair shedding...I thought a couple of months or so...is it harmful? I realise the hormones will be a bit up/down but otherwise?

HRT protects heart and bones.  However - if there are other side effects and mayB if you stop, you won't have such bad symptoms as to those which sent you to HRT initially.

I can’t see how a short break could be detrimental long term Noheroicsplease x

Do U keep a mood/food/symptom diary to chart progress?

I'm not sure of the relevance of your question, CKLD?

I don’t think a break from HRT will cause you problems long term.  From my own experience, I have taken breaks to try to ascertain what are my symptoms and what are the side effects from the HRT. I don’t really see any other way of finding out if the HRT is causing your hair shedding.  I’ve always been a ‘shedder’ and have found certain regimes have made it worse.

Just as a slight aside, what I have found has helped is yoga.  I know this sounds strange but I think it must be that some poses allow the blood flow to go to your head and this appears to help with shedding and also hair regrowth.  At the very beginning of lockdown, when I had to give my classes up, I was doing short practices at home every day and I found a great improvement over a period of time.  Something to consider perhaps 😊

Hello Noheroicsplease.

I have been on HRT since 2013 and I took a break in 2019/2020. I don't think it did me any harm however my emotional symptoms intensified plus there was a return of flushes etc.  Last year I became a patient of Newson Health and resumed HRT but I don't regret taking a break.

Wishing you well.

K.

If U keep a diary then you will see how much alteration you feel if you do stop HRT.

Thanks all. I really appreciate it. I already do yoga but not enough - but have promised myself that I will do more come Jan!

Sometimes it’s good to have a break, just to see where things are at.
I’m on one now, largely due to being unable to find a regime which doesn’t make me bleed!

Going to try CBD oil and red clover.

Good luck 🙂

Due to having 2 knee replacement ops I had to stop HRT for a few weeks prior and after surgery and it was fine.
