Title: Thrush first time in ages
Post by: suzysunday on December 08, 2021, 02:22:29 PM
Feeling fed up with a bout of thrush, haven't had it in ages.   Couldn't get through to the doctor so I have bought a canesten pessary and cream.  I'm 63 and use ovestin local hrt. It says on the pack of canesten up to age 60 so hope it's ok. I had a bit hotter bath than usual on Sunday, 6 hours after sex then the thrush started Tuesday so I don't know if there's a connection.  I've been run down for a while now I'm worried I'm going to have more vagina problems after being ok for quite a while.  Any advice?

remind me - which VA treatment have you been using and how often?

'canestan' had me sitting in a cooling bath for hours as it burned.  Badly.

I use ovestin about 3 times a week.  I have used canesten in the past ( last time about 3 years ago) with no problem.

If it helps regarding the Canesten I asked my doctor if women over 70 shouldn't use Canesten, he said no, it's ok to use.  He didn't elaborate but I've always kept a tube just in case I ever need it.

The reason for my visit to the doctor was because I thought I had a very bad thrush problem but it turned out to be the beginning of Vaginal Atrophy.
He prescribed Daktacort to relieve the thrush symptoms but also he told me to make an appointment with the gynaecologist.
The Daktacort stung like hell so it was obvious it wasn't thrush. Now using Vagifem and Novestin.

I think it's to do with licensing and/or these ancient theories that everything has to stop at 60! 🙄

Thanks for the reassurance about the age thing and canesten.

I read on another forum a while back as the reason being that Thrush is less likely over age of 60 so needs checking. I have been a lifelong sufferer of thrush, after every prescription for antibiotics, so certainly know what it is. I am 58 but shall be knocking a few years off of that in the future then. I don't want to have to go and derobe for GP and anyway takes over two weeks to get an in person appointment at our surgery, if you are lucky!

Live yoghurt eaten and applied: cleanses the gut from top to bottom.  If I have elective surgery I eat lots of LIVE yoghurt B4 admission to hospital.  Lines the gut in case ABs are required.

Let us know how you get on?

They put the age limit on the packet because post memo ladies are less likely to get thrush.  They recommend seeing a doctor first, if you are post meno, in case it's something else.

To be honest I don't see the harm.  If it doesn't work, then see your doctor.

Yes Tinkerbell as you say, I've had thrush many times and know the feeling and getting to see a doctor will be ages.  I understand that caution is advised but I need something NOW.   Is flucanazole only on prescription?

Oh yes I see it is.  Have to try canesten now I have bought it.

There may be the same +60 issue with the oral treatment at the pharmacy, not sure, but it's a maybe. As thrush is often triggered by intercourse, is the +60 assumption that it's not happening? 🤔

You can get the Canesten combo of internal pessary or cream plus the external cream from supermarkets. It's not like buying a bottle of Scotch, no-one will check your age  ;D

I've been refused oral treatment in three different pharmacies. The third one awkwardly asking how old I was as they shuffled about. The other two, a flat no. It's interesting!!!!! Implication? Get the crochet out? 🤔

What a flaming cheek!   I would fib if they asked me.

'fetch the manager' ?  Are we supposed to share our personal places?  I suppose now that we can quote "We must wear a mask and keep our distance, Boris says so." ?

Get the generic fluconazole capsule from the pharmacy. Don't pay the over inflated price for ths Diflucan One capsule.
Learnt that tip many years ago when I used to get it regularly.

You can also get oral medication online via respected pharmacies. After my in person  experience, I immediately came home and ordered three treatments which have never been used, but it's very reassuring to know I have immediate access if needs be. I'm wondering, though, if it's a Scottish restriction only (over the counter), if folks can access oral remedy elsewhere? 🤔

Yes it's very reassuring to know you have something on hand. Thanks for all the great advice x

I would definitely second the vote for buying online, and it's cheaper too.
Never ever just go for Canestan as it is way more expensive than the generic equivalent.
And I guess that using the fluconazole tablet is less likely to irritate your bits than using cream directly.  It obviously doesn't target the area, so as CLKD says, eat lots of decent live yogurt too.
Oh, and if you do get age-checked at the chemist, just tell them yes, I am that old, and I think my thrush is due to the rampant sex that I obstinately continue to have, so there!!

   No one is allowed to ask anyone their age.  Had DH done so in work his company would have sacked him.  He wasn't allowed to ask if a woman intended to become pregnant whilst in service nor how many children she already had.

I bought the canesten because I wanted something straight away and didn't have a bad reaction.  Still feel a bit tender there so though no discharge.  I'll look online to buy for future emergency and hope to not need it!

I used the canesten pessary (500mg) on Wednesday night and feel better regarding soreness but I am still having a very slight white discharge.  It seems too long for it to be the pessary, but I used my ovestin on Friday night so don't know what it is.  It says up to 7 days for the canesten to work and I have the tube of cream, but can it take this long for the thrush to go if I used the pessary Wednesday night, is it still having an effect?

I have used the Canestan pessaries before and found they can take a number of days to fully disperse, as it were.
With thrush it can be really hard to feel you've cleared up the infection,  but I would hope that the pessary has done its job.
If you're finding that the cream is irritating then don't use it and just hang in there for a few more days.
In my experience it always seems to take longer than you'd like to feel properly clear. Might help to sit on the side of the bath (feet in it!) and just let the shower head run over your bits with lukewarm water as that will help any bits of the pessary clear away. If they have reached the outside they won't have any further effect in treating the infection, and that might help you work out what's what.

Thanks.  I am reluctant to leave the ovestin too long because of the atrophy.  Yes, from past experience thrush is a persistent devil, insidious.
