Title: Advice re oestrogel leaflet
Post by: applejack on November 27, 2021, 12:46:25 PM
Hi there

I've just been switched from patches to oestrogel as I don't seem to be absorbing very well. My companion progesterone is a mirena which I had fitted a month ago.

My excellent menopause doc says to take the gel every day, which is fine. but I noticed on the leaflet that amongst all the usual warnings about possible spotting in the first 6 months it says "you will experience a monthly bleed"

Surely not? I'm post menopause and my specialist has had me on a conti patch regime for the past 18 months. I'd assumed the gel is the same principle - you take the dose continuously and do not have a bleed (apart from in the first 6 months when things might go a bit wonky). I take it you can also do the gel as part of a sequi regime and they're referring to this, but it doesn't specify on the leaflet, it just says you WILL have a monthly bleed.  I mean, sod that for a game of soldiers.

so basically conti, oestrogel - you SHOULDN'T expect a monthly bleed?

Hi if you are post menopause then you shouldn’t bleed on Oestrogel x

The leaflet is misleading, it isn't the gel that causes a bleed it depends if you use it as part of a conti or a sequi regime. As you're on a conti regime you shouldn't have a bleed.

Thanks all that’s what I thought. The leaflet seemed to separate “expect spotting/bleeding in first 6 months” from “you will bleed every month” with no explanation 🙄. Since I’ve not used gel before I had no idea what was going on!

Thanks!
