Title: Gluteal tendinopathy
Post by: lizzog on November 25, 2021, 12:05:38 PM
So I've been to see a physio and this is the diagnosis - also known as hip bursitis.  I've had it about a month- I get pain on pushing away in my left leg (can't run at the moment) walking (particularly uphill) and in bed after I've been lying on it all night.  I'm knackered through lack of sleep, and am currently doing gentle stretching, pilates and walk the dogs for half an hour every day on the flattest field I can find.
I've also got an ebike and trying to get out for a couple of shortish rides a week.
Has anyone had any experience of this?  It seemed to come on after I had my second Mirena coil removed (and had a subsequent heavy bleed and sore boobs).  I'm still on HRT - Oestrogel and Utrogestan.
I can't get into see my GP for another two weeks (already been waiting 3 weeks) and this is a telephone consult.
Any thoughts, advice etc., welcome!

Did the physio suggest this might be the cause? I would have thought it's unlikely but I'm not a doctor. Maybe take a painkiller when you go to bed if it's stopping you sleeping?

She thinks it could have contributed - there’s a lot of inflammation and I’m trying to get this down- taking turmeric tablets, Voltarol gel etc but I think it’s going to take a long time before it’s pain free

My work colleague had a corticosteroid injection which made a lot of difference. Are you seeing the physio regularly.

Bursitis is very painful.  The area is usually very red and slightly swollen.

I have sciatica and did consider it to be a bursa which was inflamed.  However, it's not a problem in the day - by 4.00 a.m. it's painful, from the bottom - where the sciatic root is - to the ankle, all down the left side of the thigh and leg.  My problem I think, is how I sit in the evenings  :-\

Pain relieve by mouth is the quickest way to ease symptoms.  When I remember to take 'nurofen' at 9.00 p.m. it isn't bothersome.  Also checking footwear ;-).  How we sit  We may need a new mattress next year .......... 'cos DH sinks into his side  :o and we can't remember how old it might be.

Before going for a planned walk I take 'nurofen' and the brisk stride helps release the nerve.

Yes I’m a side sleeper and that aggravates it along with walking upstairs and after sitting down.
I’m seeing the physio once every couple of weeks. Speaking to GP next week and won’t rule out steroid injections if offered. I’m getting v grumpy as not sleeping can’t run and can’t even cross my legs 😂

It can be painful, can you put a finger onto the exact spot?  I've seen patients jump when the Consultant finds the painful area.

I can cross my legs and when sitting, it's the small of my back which is sore.  Pain relief may well solve the problem, do you use anything in particular?

I’ve been trying voltarol gel which seems to have helped a bit.
The pain is referring from my glutes down the side of my thigh

I can feel my sciatic nerve pulling whilst sitting so I need to address my posture!

I had hip bursitis in 2019. It was very painful, interrupted sleep & stopped me running. I also had a frozen shoulder at the same time - not good.
Eventually I had an ultrasound guided steroid injection.  Not particularly pleasant but was over in minutes & did help a lot, along with physio.
I do still get a twinge now & then but nowhere near as bad as it was.
I'd say push for the ultrasound guided injection as it will take a long time for the inflammation to go down on it's own.

I woke at 4.40 and again at 7.00 a.m. the latter in acute pain I couldn't move.  With a numb foot.  Will take some pain relief B4 bed!

Thanks. Got GP appointment tomorrow after a 3 week wait so hopefully it’ll be a productive one- it’s a phone consultation so not sure how helpful it will be!
It’s waking me up every night and I’m exhausted with it now

Today is X-ray day. Since last week I’ve had two separate lumpy bruises that are tender to touch - one on outer thigh and one on front of thigh.
I wonder if they are caused by or related to bursitis.
They disappear after a few days.
Any thoughts?

Hard and lumpy but not hot. Physio was a bit mystified but said my quad was really tight and worked on it. There was bruising before she worked on it!
