Hi,
I’m 40 and I’ve just had my blood results back which show my FSH level is 160 and my LH is 70. This seems high and wonder if it’s menopause? The doctor can’t speak to me until 4th November and I’m worrying. I have a loud whooshing in my ears too and wonder if it’s connected.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks.

Hi JD123
When I was tested for meno my fsh was also high. My specialist explained to me that my pituitary was signalling to my ovaries to release an egg and my ovaries weren’t responding (rather like a car breaking down) hence the high fsh reading. I can’t remember what he said about LH level but that was in there too and it confirmed I was menopausal. I was mid forties at the time.
I’m no expert but it looks to me because of your high fsh level you’re at the same point. Hope this helps x

Thank you for your reply. I think what’s playing on my mind is a FSH of 160 too high and could there be something else wrong. I wish I could speak to a doctor before 3 weeks.

I don’t think it means anything is wrong as such just that you’ve become menopausal. I do remember feeling awful around this time, once I started on hrt that reading came down and I felt much better.
Wishing you well with your GP x

I had been told that a FSH of over 100 was a pretty certain indicator that you were well into menopause. I had to have another FSH test later (it was either 6 weeks or 6 months not sure which 🙄) to confirm that it too was over 100 and thus I was definitely post menopausal.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I feel so alone not being able to speak to a doctor.
It’s a little odd as I don’t think I’ve had many symptoms. I’ve been a bit low in mood recently. I turned 40 a few weeks ago so a bit of a shock to have such a high FSH. Not sure if the LH of 70 is high and what that means.

You are not alone, there is always someone to talk to on here. Feeling low was one of my main meno symptoms, I never had hot flushes x

Thank you. It sounds like I could well be well into menopause then. It’s a shocker at 40 but I’m sure I’ll get my head around it.
My mind is wondering to whether there is anything wrong with the pituitary gland but I know I probably need to just stay relaxed and wait for my doctors appointment.

I also had a high reading in my early 40s, and high level upon repeat test. I did have symptoms that in hindsight all lined up, but because of my age, I wasn’t taken seriously. As to the pituitary concern, I was able to get an MRI to rule out a benign pituitary tumour, and I was also referred to an endocrinologist. At the end of the day, it was just ye olde menopause.

Thanks for the reply.
That’s great you had an MRI to rule anything else out.

I was wondering if you managed to get an answer on whether it was menopause?
