Title: Is this peri menopause?
Post by: DottyP on October 07, 2021, 02:27:30 PM
Hello, I’m hoping I can get some advice on here.

My periods are still regular - though I did have a 17 day bleed last December - and last between 4-6 days. Some months they’re on the heavier side, some their on the lighter side; some months I have bad pms, some I don’t.

Since my last period ended, last week, I have been feeling dreadful and I can’t work out whether it’s peri meni, a virus or something else as they all seem to have similar symptoms.

My main symptoms are:
- utter exhaustion that gets worse throughout the day,
- feeling cold (so cold) to the point where I just need to bundle up under the duvet fully clothed to try and get warm,
- dizziness that comes and goes and sometimes feeling like my eyes aren’t focusing quickly enough - if I go from close work to further away,
- a really weird sensation in my head, almost like a constant tingling feeling and it feels fuzzy. No clarity.
- sporadic stabbing pains around my body arms/legs etc.
- headaches which suddenly come on with a shooting pain
_ anxiety that also comes and goes for no obvious rhyme or reason.

All of the above symptoms I have experienced before in my life whether from anxiety, viruses or ME so I just don’t know whether what I’m experiencing now is hormonal or not.

My gp’s are unhelpful. I’m too old to have a blood test (I’m 48) and tell me to just try the HRT but I’m scared to as have heard so many horror stories about side effects. Plus i seem to react to a number of meds and don’t want to have a bad reaction.

Please, any advice, help or info would be so gratefully received.

Hi dotty

Has your Gp done any bloods to rule out any other reason for the above

Peri can Chuck anything at us , expect the unexpected basically

The periods and pms on and off and also the light heavy periods all sound like peri to me ,
I’ve had the dizziness and weird brain fog and tingling headache
I’ve had the aches and pains all over body & last year I had my first ever migraine & aniexty I first experienced this year

So a lot of what your saying could well be peri … I hear a lot of people say on here about being exhausted
Being cold isn’t one I’ve read about but we are all different

I would actually see if your doc can give you a full blood count , just so you know
Mine came back clear , so was peri for me .

Remember with HRT we are all different , so what might suit one , won’t suit another and so on
I was told that why the hormones are fluctuating that you don’t need to add HRT but maybe try a mini pill  destrogel ( spelt wrong ) as that will help with the fluctuating hormones, it’s when our hormones are falling that we add in HRT

I think I added it in too soon for me & therefore felt worse , but as I said we are all different & we all tolerate things different.
Some women the HRT is a godsend , maybe speak to your doctor about ruling other things out first ..

Xxx

Hi! when did U last have a full blood test: anemia, thyroid function etc.?

Some ladies find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary is useful to chart progress

As oestrogen levels drop muscles may become lax = aches and pains as well as that dizzy feeling if there is a nerve trapped in the neck.  The body maybe come dry: inside and out!  Do read the 'bladder issues' and 'vaginal atrophy' threads.  4warned is 4armed.

Being cold may signify a problem with the thyroid.  Periods wax and wane  ::)

Thank you for taking the time to reply.  It takes so long to get blood tests done here.  I have only just had one for allergies which was requested in August and the gp’s here are awful so you have to fight every time to get anything done.  God forbid they would actually see you face to face!  Sorry, but it’s a constant battle you don’t need when feeling unwell.

I have spoken to a dr about hrt and she just says take it.  There is no time for having a proper chat about it with them. They are all too busy and anxious questions just annoy them.  I’m a single Mum with a son with epilepsy so the thought of side affects from medication feels almost worse than what Im’ experiencing now - I guess partly because it’s the unknown.

I had low iron after the long bleed last year but the spatone made me feel ill so the doctor told me to stop taking it.  I haven’t had my thyroid checked for a couple of years I don’t think.

I will brave the gp receptionists in the morning and see if it is the ok dr on duty rather than the three horrific ones.

I do hope you manage to get your bloods done
Where are you dotty ?
I understand about we should be seeing them face to face.. winds me up as I don’t see how they can diagnose over phone and too be honest the call is rushed and you never feel any better after speaking to them
When you see them 9 out 10 times you do feel a little better that someone as seen you .. so I understand and it frustrates me ..
everyone else as gone Bck to work so why GP are any Different I will never know

HRT suits a lot of people , but sometimes it takes a while to find the right regime , or you could be a lucky one and get straight away

I understand your concerns with side effects as I was the same

I do hope you manage to get through to doctor and hopefully they sort out some bloods etc for you.

Let us know how you get on Xx

You are so right about the rush phone call and not feeling better.  I spoke to my gp this morning and had written down all of my symptoms so I didn’t forget anything - still managed to forget something though!  She is booking me in for bloods - thyroid/menopause/iron etc.  So, thank you ladies so much.  Was beginning to feel like a monster.  Bloods arent’ until the end of the month but at least hopefully some answers lie ahead.  if it does turn out to be the menopause I will more seriously consider hrt because I can’t function as i am.  Xx

Ring and ask for a referral to a dedicated menopause clinic if the surgery isn't accepting Face2face appts..  Not a gynaecologist !!
