Title: HRT first timer - advice please
Post by: Ambergirl on August 17, 2021, 11:51:52 AM
Hi Ladies,

Just some advice about going on HRT please. I have been thinking about it for ever... I have had a year with no periods, then 2 last year and a hysteroscopy which showed all ok. Had another 7 months without and then two bleeds in March and April this year - another hysteroscopy which did not have enough in the sample but seemed all ok and consultant discharged me back to GP. Spoke to GP today about HRT as I am having more flushes and joint pain. She told me that my blood tests since 2018 show me as post-meno. First time anyone has said that to me and I was a bit taken aback. Anyway she has prescribed me Everel Conti which she dithered about because I have had some bleeds.
I am starting the patches next week - any advice would be welcomed. I am 55, no children and full bits! GP said I would get some bleeding and she has prescribed 3 months supply and then a review. What do you knowledgeable ladies think?

Your GP isn't correct.  If she dithered?  Do put the product name into the search box on the forum to C what pops up?  Make notes ;-).

Peri-menopause - the years, 10+ sometimes, leading up to the 'menopause' - literally the last menstrual bleed.  Ever.  But - no one is menopausal until they have had at least 12 months without any kind of bleed or show.  Peri - when symptoms may become troublesome.

A natural drop in oestrogen levels may cause dryness: inside and out; skin, vagina, deep in the ears, nostrils, eyes, scalp - as well as muscles may become lax = aches and pains.  Over the counter pain relief can help.

Do read the 'bladder issues' and 'vaginal atrophy' threads - make notes.  Forwarned is forearmed ;-).

Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use to chart progress.  Let us know how you get on!   :welcomemm:

Blood tests in peri are notoriously unreliable so I would take the results with a pinch of salt. I would prefer a sequi regime but as you're so irregular a conti regime should be fine. You can expect breakthrough bleeding in the first 6 months of any conti regime. My advice is to stick 'em on and keep your fingers crossed  :). I hope it goes well.

Hi,
Thanks for the comments. Do you think that Sequi would be better then? She suggested that I would probably not want to have a bleed every month. I don't feel awful but I am aware that HRT has many more benefits; heart/bone health/dementia etc... She has ordered my a Conti patch - should I ask for something different?

At the stage you're at nothing is ideal. If you use conti and still cycle yourself you may have unexpected bleeding. If you use sequi and don't have a 28 day cycle that causes problems too (my own cycle was always stronger than the hrt one). I would go with what she's prescribed.
