Title: Plucked up the courage and had my Astra vaccine today... Short of breath
Post by: loonarider on May 01, 2021, 10:54:02 PM
Hi all,

After much deliberation I took the vaccine. Didn't hurt, sore arm right now and some muscle, joint pain, dry mouth but now have short of breath and of course thinking the worse. Is it the jab or my health anxiety?

I don't know, but would like to be reassured right now and a little afraid to sleep tonight.

If I'm getting short of breath now that wouldn't be an allergic reaction right? as I hear that would happen soon after the jab.

Weird that it's in my system now. Whatever happens happens so long as I don't keel over.  :'(

Morning. It's  anxiety most probably.  How long did you wait there after you were injected?  We were told not to drive for 15 mins and to wander round the town near the Pharmacy, 2 go back there if any problems arose. So 15-20 mins. seems to be the time symptoms may well appear.

How R U this morning?

Hey CKLD,

They sent me on my way straiggt after. No waiting. Suffice to say I think it's anxiety, however the headaches are so bad.

Mine began around 10 pm yesterday night which is rightly 6hr30 mins after the jab. Took a paracetamol , did nothing. Then had an uncomfortable sleep with the headaches which seemed to be worse when laying down, (not sure it's because blood rushing to head when horizontal or not) , and then weird feeling on left side of neck and left face. I had my jab on left arm.

Took anther paracetamol because couldn't sleep with headaches at 3am and then another at 7 am this morning to no avail.

Was wondering if there's something I can do to help the headaches. Of course, I called 111 and they jsut said call my GP on Tuesday if persists.

I'm very tired as haven't slept but maybe if I force myself to eat somethjng might help. It's like a really bad hang over.

Or maybe I need a stronger med for the headaches? Nurofen?

I appreciate your insight CKLD  :D

Hi loonarider. Well done on getting the vaccine. It's the Pfizer one you have to wait for 15 minutes as there have been no anaphylactic episodes from the Astra one. Anaphylactic shock will appear within 15 minutes.

Headaches from the rare blood clots caused by Astra begin from day 4 up to four weeks after the jab according to the info my partner had with his (I had Pfizer he had Astra). They are accompanied by nausea, blurred vision, loss of sensation etc. and don't respond to painkillers at all .My partner had a slight headache 24 hours later. My friend had a day of headache and nausea 3 days after her second one so everyone is different. I had a bad fibro flare (5 years since last one) two weeks after first jab and have been informed that it will be worse after the 2nd so to be aware.

Could it be the lack of sleep and anxiety causing the headache? I had the 2nd Pfizer yesterday and had racing heartbeat from 11 last night till 3 this morning but I can't find this as a side effect so must have been too much chocolate! It's such a lonely feeling isn't it when you are anxious in the small hours.

I think headaches are common. I had a bad one so did OH. Try getting involved with something you have to concentrate on, less time to overthink things ;). I found fresh air helped clear my head.

Yes, whilst easier said than done, try not to dwell on what might be rather than what is. We have this beautiful Spring all around us and you have this amazing protection in your system right now. This is your "what is". I agree that fresh air will help and giving your attention fully to your senses. They can all be applied to a simple cup of coffee! Enjoy.....

Drink plenty.  I was very thirsty 3 days after, lasted 48 hours.   Dehydration = headaches.

Paracetamol never touches pain 4 me.  I use 'nurofen' for everything.  Can't take anything stronger!  You could take Paracetamol and 'nurofen' separated during the day as a top up.

How R U now?  Feet up, keep drinking and eat regularly.

Thanks for the reply! I guess it could be down to dehydration as CKLD said. Super thirsty, so trying to drink as much as I can. It is lonely, I geuss I'm lucky to have a partner who is very supportive and tries to talk me out of my constant obssessing. But I'm sure deep inside he's sick my probems  ;D Why I come on here to give you guys an ear ache and not him. (joke)   ;D

That's an instant relief knowing it's common. I wonder what kind of headache would warrant medical attention though... (over thinking again...going to shut up). Yes, feel better after getting out of bed, pottered about the house a bit, had some tea, got some water on the go and will check out my plants in the garden. Thank you x

As soon as I saw your post about nurofen I got my partner to pick some up  for me, it certainly has taken the edge off already compared to the paracetmol which did diddley squat. I' try mixing it up. Do you mean paracetmol together with nurofen? How much?

I feel better than last night, so thank you. Really useful adivce especially when not thinking straight. :o

Not together.  Allow 4 hours between each medication.  Sort of a top up.

.... and breath ;-)

I heard a pain relief specialist on the radio recommending that paracetamol and ibuprofen be taken together for quick effective relief of headaches. It was a small 200mg ibuprofen tablet taken with a standard 500mg paracetamol tablet - it works.

The same combination is available OTC in Nuromol tablets..

Not much improvement at the moment. My left arm is so bad, and neck hurts. Some crampy pains in my abdomen that come and go (but maybe just focusing on too many niggles), headache is still there, but not as bad thanks to nurofen. I managed a gentle stroll in the garden as way too fatigued and exhausted from the vaccine and not getting any sleep at the same time.

Just hoping it will start clearing up from tomorrow.  :D

I hate to bang on. Just wanted to know what your headaches felt like. Mine sort of sharp at the temples and its scaring me as this particular pain the nurofen doesn't seem to work at the moment. :'( I' be honest I'm scared. Can't get clots out of my head.

The main thing with the Astra blood clot headache is that it starts 4 days after the vaccine. It takes this long for any changes to begin to give symptoms so there is no need to think that your headache is due to blood clots so try not to worry. If your neck hurts then it sounds as if tension in the big neck muscles is causing the headache.  Any fatigue should resolve within a few days.

Thank you Taz first good night sleep for a while irrespective of the vaccine effects.

Though, guess what happens now, my mum calls (67) early this morning has a swollen uncomfortable leg mostly her knee and a splitting headache on left side.

She had her 2nd dose 9 days ago so she called the hospital and they'll see her this morning.

I hope she'll be OK, but it's making me worry now. Just when I was feeling a bit more relaxed today.

Just hoping it's nothing related to the vaccine as she alaready has clots/dvt. Trying to think rationally, correlation does not imply causation, etc. :(

At least you slept.

I often wake with a background headache, after the 1st vaccination I took 'nurofen' at around 1.30 a.m. on an 'in case' basis.  Another mid afternoon, job done.

Hopefully your Mum will be OK.

How's the head Taz?

Yea breathing fine, I tend to have breathing issues a lot of the time and think it's just that. Drinking as much as I can.

Notice sometimes a bit dizzy. Still, feel much better than yesterday. Hoping tomorrow, day 3 will be feeling more normal.  :D

P. S. My mum is fine, she's on thinners so nurse said it'd be impossible to have a clot and her bloods were fine.

Hopefully if the leg was swollen she has been told to elevate the limb above hip height when sitting and laying, as well as exercising regularly?

Yes they probably did, and she's always has her leg up if sitting. Her problems arose after a long haul flight, kind of puts things in perspective!

She's also pretty active, likes walking a lot. Thank you  :)

Hi there - I had this reaction for a couple of hours after the vaccine - it felt like a nervous system kind of reaction. Heart rate increased and short of breath. It cam on immediately after I had it. Calmed down and was replaced by severe flu type symptoms which lasted a couple of days. I don't think it was stress, nor do I think it was allergic. Our nervous system reacts to all sorts and the vaccine is a fairly hefty assault on your body. If you are a sensitive type you will really feel it.

Fortunately, I didn't have severe symptoms. It was just the headaches mostly and feeling a bit disorientated.

All the symptoms are waning now.

Hope you're OK x

Glad to hear it.

Was wondereing if any of the lovely ladies tell me when the first sign of a clot post vaccination is. I don't want to google it as will be too overwhelming. I just want to know what to look out for since it'll be the fourth day post 1st does of the astra vaccine tomorrow. I reckon if I feel headache/pain in my head tomorrow I should call seek urgent medical help?? I sut feel like until 4 weeks are up I can't help being anxious.

Had a terrible panic attack this morning, nearly called the ambulance  :(

Don't know if this any help but my sister had a brain aneurysm years ago (and therefore a clot) and the symptoms are extreme. The docs say it feels like the WORST headache you've ever had in your life; off the charts type of pain. Obviously if you're worried then contact a doctor but for it to be a clot it's normally really awful pain.

loonrider - any effects would have manifested itself by now.  As Iris explains, brain tumours etc. cause extreme off the scale pain.  Not a headache which may be stress related or due to dehydration.

Eat well.  Exercise gently to get the body working correctly which will help with sleep.

Hi Loonarider
I understand your worries. I am 19 days post vaccine. I think 4-16 days and possibly up to 33 days are when problems can occur.
AFAIK things to look out for are:-
Pinprick bruising anywhere on the body.
A headache so bad that you cant stand up. Def not run of the mill.
blurred or double vision
possibly headache might be over one eye.
Severe adominal pain
chest pain or breathlessness
DVT symtoms- leg swelling and pain.
All of this in the leaflet that you would have been given post vaccine.
best wishes x

And the problems that OK are rare like winning the lottery I keep telling myself. Still feel like it's going to happen to me. This is why I didn't want to take it because I know I'm going to feel anxious for 33 days. It's sucks, I jsut want to to forget about the clots and I can't.  :-\

I have head pressure, not painful but uncomfortable like tightening. Weird tingling in my face... Just strange feelings. Not helping my health anxiety. Nurofen took the edge off a bit, but not enough to not notice it there.

I just don't really want to feel anxious for weeks thinking I could die. I wanted the vaccine to be peace of mind, but its making me very stressed.  :'(

My doc was meant to call today and nothing so now waiting for another phone appointment.
