Hello
I gave up smoking a few days ago and immediately my hot flushes have got much, much worse.
I have always suffered badly from the hot sweats and flushes 24/7 (I am not on any HRT or any kind of medication for post-meno).
I do have an underactive thyroid which is being controlled very well by thyroxine.
Anyone have any idea why this would happen? I am waking up all through the night hot and sweaty and then freezing cold.
I am having the same during the day now though and it's unbearable.
What am I going to do once the weather gets hot?
HELP :)

Interesting! I would ring a Pharmacist and ask the question. As a non-smoker who doesn't have hot flushes, I will be interested in any suggestions of interaction between tobacco and menopause.
Do U keep a mood/food/symptom diary which may be useful?

I seem to remember reading an article about the relationship between tobacco and oestrogen. It was favourable for libido and moisture if I recall correctly. Being highly stimulatory, I imagine there must be some kind of fall-out from stopping. So, it clearly interacts with hormones, probably quite uniquely according to other aspects of the individual's hormonal set-up? Might be worth a wee bit of research? Good luck!

Hi Rea64,
According to this research smoking increases sexhormones;

I stopped smoking but besides not smelling so bad I didn't feel any better.
