Hi,
Does anyone else get this, a song playing repetitively/obsessively in the head? Impossible to stop. Feels so intrusive! Any thoughts? It starts on waking and goes on throughout the day for spells! 🙄
-
It's called an ear worm.

Yes me,it drives me up the wall,it was that bloody sea shanty, would go to bed and it wouldn't stop,so now I do technique at bedtime which involves saying "don't think" over and over in your head, which is what they apparently teach to soldiers and it works thankfully
-
Yep. We have a brass elephant in our lounge, if anyone dares mention 'Nellie' 4 her name. ............. >:( ;D
Do U sing in your sleep, I do ::)
-
Gosh, this is really interesting. Is it hormonal? Oh, yes, the sea shanty! ;D With me, it's Dermot Kennedy's "Outnumbered"....even with the Irish accent to a tee! No, I don't sing in my sleep, thankfully, grateful for the respite! I wonder if there's something about the repetition, always seems a very repetitive song! 🤔
-
I've had this all my Life. I used to whistle through my teeth, Dad put a stop to that! I've noticed that I do it again ......... I expect his Big Hand to come down from above and clip my ear ;D
With me it's usually a tune/song that I can't abide, or 1 that I know a few words of but not the whole song. :D
-

It's not hormonal. Latest research suggests chewing gum might help break the cycle. Some say to play the whole song through as usually it's not the whole song which plays in your head but a repetitive riff or phrase from the song. By hearing the whole song it can stop the endless playing of part of it. My earworm today is a song called Recovery by Frank Turner. It's only the chorus but is apt for the way the world is at the minute!

......... and add tinnitus into the mix ? >:( ::)
-
I have this when I do not know the song properly, especially if I can't get the words right and make some up. I look on it as my brain trying to fill in the gaps.
The usual cure is to learn it properly.
-
I get this, lots and lots. I mentioned it to my husband who had no clue what I was talking about. For example, since watching It’s a Sin I have the “I saw a Mouse, where...’ (A windmill in Amsterdam) song on almost a constant loop which to be honest I could do without :)
-
Oh stop it ;D .............
'Edelweiss ......... '

Thanks for that Lynda - now I've got It's a Sin going round and round in MY head ;D

Trying really hard not to laugh, but there IS a funny side! Quite often advert tunes go on a loop with me, too. Perhaps we should keep this thread running with what everyone's "playing"! Meanwhile....."Everybody Loves Somebody Some Time...." 🎼🎵🎙🎤🎧🤯
-
I lost my heating suddenly a few years back in both ears due to both eardrums bursting within hours of each other. I developed musical tinnitus, honestly I’d be dropping off to sleep and I’d have last night of the proms playing, symbols clashing! The lot! I had classical music plus way time songs. Dr said it’s the brain making noise
-
Sorry Taz2 ;)
-
That's ok. Partner is now stuck with it too! I don't know many of the words either! Da da da da da da da....
Taz x ;D

Love this thread!
I have constant ear worms throughout the day triggered by what I hear, it can be a song on the radio or TV, but more likely from just a comment made that triggers it off. Eg. ‘Let’s go!’ = ‘let’s go fly a kite’ (Mary Poppins)
It also happens from me doing something Eg turning the car engine on = ‘keep the motor running, head out to the highway (Born to be Wild)
Obviously now I’ve read the thread I’m hearing ‘It’s a Sin’, but will also do a verse of ‘There was a mouse, (where) there on the stairs’ too ;D
-
 I went to bed with "Edelweiss" , woke quiet but now

That's what Gene Kelly did around the lamp post - singing in the rain, just singing in the rain ........

I now have 'calypso' going round my head: bear with me, there was a question about the Planets on Tipping Point - it's actually Callista but I misheard the name ;D
-
I don’t know that one CLKD - maybe thats a good thing lol

"I'm H-A-P-PY. I'm H-A-P-P-Y. I know I am. I'm sure I am. I'm H-A-P-P-Y! "
🙄🤯🙄
-
Calypso was written by John Denver ........ "Hey Calypso ........ "
-
I've had. ' Ralph is a Rusty Robot,'. from CBeebies, my 3yr old Foster child loves it, and although it's a catchy tune, it's been going round and round in my head all day. 😧😧

Is that the one with a yodel in the middle?
Taz x ;D

I think so ;D
I watched a friend's cremation Service yesterday and now have one of the tunes in my head, even in the night :o

Wonderful phenomenon called endomusia, or earworms :o.
My all time most hated group of songs that get stuck in my head (along with just about everything at the moment, so having read this thread I've got a right chorus going on ;D ) is anything by Abba. What's euphemistically known as 'catchy'. Haha yeah catchy alright. I can catch myself repetitively singing a song and then going, how come that one I must have heard it somewhere and not noticed it.
Anyone ever managed to get over this thing?
-
By overlaying something else ......... I had an ear worm for several weeks but couldn't get by the 1st few lines: now I've listened to Christa Burgh for the 1st time in years, now 1 of his songs is in my head ;D
-
CKLD - just don't pay the ferryman! 8)
-
I'm going to seek more Chris de Burgh's CDs in charity shops ..........
Right now it's "Take my hand, give me a ........... " [Bangles] ::)
-
Oops CLKD I got your name wrong, sorry :(
Luckily I don't know that Bangles song (and you don't need to sing any more of it to remind me ;) ) but I've now had Don't Pay the Bleeding Ferryman going round and round in my head since your last post. If I wake up with it tomorrow morning I shall be forced to fix a price just for some peace inside my head.
Or as you suggest, overlay with something else. Hmm like what, another song?
Money money money... :parti:
-
 you're on the ball ;D
There are certain songs in les miserables that go round my head, sometimes I can remember all the words so it's OK: other times ............
-
For some obscure reason I know the words to didn't we have a lovely day the day we went to Bangor ;D
-
Jaypo I don't know that song, but the words when you say them aloud are certainly catchy. I shall make sure I don't read them again!
CLKD I've never found knowing all the lyrics stops the endomusia - just makes the loop even longer (but worth another try just in case :) )
-
OH it has a long name then ;D
jaypo - :kick: dates us, don't it
-
It was a fun song though,Google it lamplighter, you'll be singing it all day ;D
A beautiful day we had lunch on the way and all for under a pound
-
Then there's the Birdy Song :whist:
-
We got a spectacular version of a mantra I love on "Buddha Day", but I now can't shift the damn thing! There's mantra (beneficial) in small doses and then THIS! Aaaaaarghhhhh!!!!!!!!!
