Ok, so on top of my pending hysteroscopy on Thursday (going into a hospital is freaking me out more than the procedure) I’m now on a 7 day course of antibiotics for cystitis. I had a 3 day course over Christmas which didn’t work so began this 7 day course last Friday. No pain, no burning just a feeling that there’s constant bladder pressure all the time, it eases but then returns. I’m thinking it’s something other than cystitis. Feel utterly miserable and weepy and worried.

Which AB? 3 day courses shouldn't be given. The minimum should be 7 day (advice from urogynaecologist). Have you tried bicarb of soda in water /antiinflammatory pain killer to relieve symptoms?
-
Most likely 2B vaginal atrophy - urine samples should be sent to a Lab. so that the correct AB, if required, is prescribed. I've never been able to complete a course ........ then found out my symptoms are atrophy: which mimics urine infection-type symptoms really, really well!
-
Have you checked that the hospital is happy to carry out the hysteroscopy if you are not sure whether your infection has gone? Might be a good idea just to check. Interstitial cystitis can give a feeling of bladder pressure. Was infection detected by laboratory testing?

Thankyou so much for replying. The antibiotic is called MacroBID 100mg twice a day for seven days. The surgery only did the dip test, which was clear twice, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t sent to the lab but no infection detected. I will tell the hospital though. Today I’ve also taken Buscopan which is for IBS (which I don’t have) but also “irritable bladder” it does seem to have subdued the “pressure and wanting to pee” all the time. The antibiotics will finish Thursday when I’m due at the hospital......not sure where I go from here but have been reading up on VA and interstitial cystitis which I know nothing about. Thankyou for you help
-
Your GP should have sent the sample to a Lab., there are too many ABs being prescribed 'in case'. If the sample doesn't grow any bugs then the patient does not need ABs, but appropriate treatment. If your GP thinks there is an embedded infection, this needs proper diagnosis by a Consultant and treatment. I suggest that you ring to find out which Lab it was sent to.
Take some 'nurofen' which will ease the feeling of a need to pee. Buscopan is for indigestion. We used to give it to my dog who had a slight twist in the gut occasionally, he would have two tablets then burp about 20 mins. later.
-
Thanks CLKD for that information, I’ll certainly try nurofen. Taz2 I think I’ll contact my surgery or the hospital tomorrow and ask about having the hysteroscopy while being treated for cystitis, although I guess that could delay it somewhat. I really want to get rid of the bladder discomfort though it’s making me really miserable, not least because of several trips to the loo during the night!!
-
Contact the dept., it will save time.
I remembered too, that when constipated: I suffer with slow transit >:( : my bladder is more irritated.

There is no such thing as interstitial cystitis or irritable bladder, these are lazy diagnoses. Oestrogen is important for the genitourinary system, as there are many oestrogen receptors in the lower urinary tract. Standard NHS testing for UTIs is woefully inadequate. Hope the MACRObid does the trick. I have been taking it for several months to treat an embedded UTI.

I think a prolapse can cause pressure on the bladder? Perhaps they could check it out while you're in.
-
After watching this mornings news I really feel to scared to go to my hospital appointment on Thursday to have such an invasive procedure!!!!
-
So ring the Hospital? They may not be involved with any C-19 cases. You don't need to suffer - if they have any concerns about your safety they will postpone if necessary. If you don't ask you will continue to worry.
-
I’ve had this bladder pressure on & off for a while now? Over the weekend had really bad constant lower left back pain like burning/stinging (had this on & off for ages too) waiting for a call back from doctors, generally feeling unwell too but felt generally unwell since June when my peri symptoms really ramped up :-\
-
Gosh Itwillpass, I totally sympathise, I hope you get to speak to the doctor soon. It’s really mentally and physically draining x
-
It is draining. Worrying. Upsettting. When I had a urine infection the comfiest place was on the loo so that the muscle could relax ::)
-
I rang the hospital, a recorded message goes through all the usual safety regulations COVID and others, then I was put into a lengthy queue.....I didn’t wait as I’m sure the receptionist would only reaffirmed what I’d been told already.
-
How do U feel, have you needed 'nurofen' this morning?
-
Thanks ladies, spot on mentally & physically draining that’s how I feel 😕 do you think it could be a bladder infection/uti are these the same? It doesn’t hurt when I wee but feel an urgency more, it’s the burning back ache that’s exhausting. skkb I recently had to go to a hospital appointment & found it much better because it’s all so quiet, one way system & not many people about, I was still scared silly though x
-
Itwillpass - ring your GP Surgery if you have unexplained backache with irritable bladder symptoms. Ask for a urine sample to be sent away to check if an infection is suspected.
-
Thought the back ache was just a peri symptom my spine sounds like it’s playing a tune when I move! Nurse is phoning me at 5pm today :) I feel really run down
-
Have a list of worries to hand.
-
Interestingly my daughters neighbour has today gone into the same hospital as the one I’ll be visiting on Thursday, she is having a camera into her bladder, so quite invasive, she had to have a COVID test before the appointment and isolate thereafter before going in. She is 80. I have received no such advice or request which seems a bit odd, nor as to what/when pain relief to take beforehand. It does appear that the hospital clinic are fairly quiet with not too many people, which is a comfort. All I’ve taken today is the AB and another buscopan (the leaflet inside it is given for “calming the bladder) and I have to say it feels much better although hopefully the ABs are also kicking in!!
-
Just got back from seeing the nurse managed to fit me in at the end of the day! Have an infection so been put on a 7 day course of ABs said normally 3 days but was worried about the back pain & my kidneys I’m totally freaked out & worrying like crazy I didn’t really ask any questions :-\ CLKD I never even mentioned it being sent away either
-
The urine sample must be sent to a Lab. to make sure that you have been given the correct AB and not a broad spectrum which may not kill the bug. Take some pain relief too. You can ring to speak to the Nurse in the morning if you are worried. Make a list first!
-
She said if I still have back pain after the ABs I’ll need my kidneys checking I don’t even know how totally freaked out :'( I tried paracetamol & ibuprofen which doesn’t help trying to drink loads
-
The AB is nitrofurantoin MR 100mg twice a day 7 days same as yours sskb how are you finding them? It says on the leaflet for bladder infections/kidney infections so hopefully will help, gosh I really hope they do :-\
-
I've had nitro a few times but I'm afraid it's not worked for me and I usually end up on amoxicillin. See how it goes though. If your doc is worried about your kidneys then I'd suggest taking your temperature each morning just to make sure you are not developing a kidney/upper urinary tract infection. Also nurofen is not recommended for kidney infection. Paracetamol is better.
Taz x
-
Oh no Taz2 that’s no good :-\ yes that’s a good idea with the temperature I’ll do that, I’ve never had an infection before & the nurse has sent my health anxiety sky high now mentioning kidneys. I usually only take paracetamol as ibuprofen upsets my stomach but I was trying both with the back ache but neither helped with pain, does this seem odd?!
-
Try not to worry. If neither paracetamol or ibuprofen helped with the back pain I think it's unlikely it's caused by your kidneys. Whereabouts in your back is the pain? When I had a kidney infection I felt really Ill - not just back pain - with a high temperature, nausea and flu- type feeling. Your doc was just being cautious I think.
Taz x
-
Lower left like a burning really sore this morning, temp fine but I do feel really unwell anxious, jelly legs, nausea & a bit like a flu feeling :-\
-
:thankyou: Taz. about not taking 'nurofen' for kidney problems. However, Paracetamol never eases anything for me :-\.
-
I’m on my fifth day of MacroBID (Nitrofurantoin)....fingers crossed things seem a little easier, hope 7 days will do the trick. I didn’t have any backache though. I’m sure they will send your urine sample off to the lab, ring the surgery and ask, I did. My next hurdle is the hysteroscopy on Thursday and my anxiety regarding going into a hospital environment at the present time with this flipping’ “highly infectious “ variant around :(
-

Those are typical side effects of nitro. Well they were in my case each time I took them. It also caused headache, neck and back pain plus the delightfully yellow wee! ;D
Hope you feel better soon

-
Taz it’s awful I’ve only just got out of bed forcing some toast down, did you feel like this during the whole course! skkb keep us posted will be thinking of you :)
-
It did make me feel ill, yes. I felt dizzy but that was more in the beginning. I found if took it with a large glass of water I felt less sick. If it's working for you then try to persevere.
Taz x
-
Thanks so much Taz, I was talking it with my breakfast & evening meal. Yes I definitely felt dizzy with it, feel my back ache might be easing but maybe that’s because it’s nearly bedtime & I’m winding down for the day :-\
-
Hopefully you will feel better tomorrow. Does it help to put a hot water bottle/heat pad on your back?
Taz x
-
I haven’t tried that, I’ll go pinch my sons now (he’s not using it)! & give it try thank you. I’ve also started to load up on my vagirux tablets at night too some ladies say these might help worth a try x

Hello
I developed a sensitive bladder over the last 3 years. I was told it wasn't connected with menopause but I think it is. My symptoms were constant pressure also. I would wee every 5 minutes just to relieve this pressure. Anyway, I ended up having hydrodistension for it under general anesthetic and it worked a treat. However, a few months on, I'm wondering if it's starting to creep back in... I am due to start HRT as suffering terrible fatigue and insomnia and FSH levels are sky high and am curious to see whether that stops me going back to where I was re: urgency. Anyhow, don't worry about your procedure. I was in and out of hospital in 2 hours for the above and hydrodistension is quite a big procedure as bladder treatment goes. :)
-
Thanks Purplefaze a little reassurance is always good to have, hope to be in and out just as quickly. All prepared with appropriate protection etc, I can’t do anymore. Be glad when I’m back home 😍

Are you a doctor? I would seriously reconsider your advice here. In fact I find it quite offensive that you say IC does not exist!
I can assure you it does! I’ve had it for 13 years.
