Title: Menopause symptoms after HRT
Post by: Gailee on August 31, 2020, 04:17:35 PM
I had a complete menopause 11 years ago and have been on conjugated estrogen since but as I’m 50 yes old now my dr wants me to consider stopping the HRT. Will I go through all the menopause symptoms etc, what will happen, can’t seem to find any real answers

Hi there is no need to stop hrt at 50. The guidance now is that you can take hrt for as long as you want / need to. x

Hi Gailee, welcome to the forum.

It does not make sense to stop HRT at 50, when most people are only just starting it. You should still be on oestrogen to protect your health for the future. Conjugated oestrogen would be Premarin I imagine? What you need is a transdermal method of delivery, such as a patch or gel. These are risk free, much 'safer' than oral delivery as they bypass the liver. Information can be found under treatments on this website, and another excellent resource is Dr Louise Newson's website My Menopause Doctor.

Yes, you will probably go through all the rubbish menopause symptoms if you stop, although may not, of course. We are all different. However, continuing with oestrogen therapy will protect your bones, heart, brain, gut, and genitourinary system for the future, and you can take it for the rest of your life.

Don't stop if your regime suits you.  Quality of Life?  Did the GP give any reason at all why he/she wants you to stop?  Costs to the Surgery, old research which has been discounted ........ would he/she stop medication if you were diabetic or had heart disease?

You will probably, if you stop, go through symptoms.  Is it worth stopping to find out?  Is there any part of your regime that doesn't suit you?
