Title: New Law for England [Winter Corona-Virus and 'flu]
Post by: CLKD on August 29, 2020, 10:31:41 AM
Here we go again  ::)

A leaked government report suggests a "reasonable worst case scenario" of 85,000 deaths across the UK this winter due to Covid-19.

The document also says while more restrictions could be re-introduced, schools would likely remain open.

But it says the report "is a scenario, not a prediction" and the data are subject to "significant uncertainty".

However some are critical of the modelling and say some of it is already out of date.

The document, which has been seen by BBC Newsnight, was prepared for the government by the Sage scientific advisory group, which aims to help the NHS and local authorities plan services, such as mortuaries and burial services, for the winter months ahead.

Among its key assumptions are that schools will remain open and that the government's tracing, isolation, and quarantine measures will only be 40% effective in cutting the spread of Covid outside households.

Maybe that's why some people I know are C.mas shopping ?

Interesting...same might be true here as well.  They are predicting another wave in the winter months but not as bad as the first and not antipating another lockdown.  Add to that, cold and flu season, which can be bad without having to deal with covid.  The powers that be don't really know what to expect, it depends on how vigilant and conscientious the public will be.
I usually don't get the flu shot (makes me feel awful) but after getting really sick with the flu over Christmas and being scolded by my GP, I will get it this year.

I used to pay for the flu vacation, when I was working.  However one year I developed a nasty kidney infection not long after.  Don't know if there is any connection but it really put me off.  Our immune system is best not messed with unless absolutely necessary.

I don't know if I will have the flu vac this year.  As for covid, the speed it's being developed is worrying.  No vaccine is 100% safe, but one with no proper testing data is very concerning.

It's no good distroying the virus if the patient still dies.

I have had the flu jab for several years with no ill effects and intend to get it this year too. Will probably have the Covid one too as long as I don't suspect it  to be a Russian version!

I don't think, due to isolating and face masks, that many people will get 'flu this Winter.  Have you heard of anyone having the common cold?  MayB people haven't dared admit to it?

I don't believe in chemicals in the body unless absolutely necessary.  If we knock out 1 virus then others step in.  I had 'flu in March 1988 and March 1989 - never since.  My MinL was persuaded in the 1980s to have the 'flu jab - never ever having had the virus - she was ill each time.  The 3rd year she couldn't move for 3 days ......... she lived alone and BinL happened to call in and found her really ill.  GPs at that time were being paid a tenner a shot ........ she never had it again so didn't suffer side effects.

Hopefully the Nightingale Hospitals will remain so that any one requiring treatment can take use of them.  It's time that the 'health' service was up and running to full capacity.

The flu vaccine is a 'live'vaccine and some shielders/ medically vulnerable people can't have it due to medications they are taking, my hubby is one that cannot have live vaccines. I don't doubt for a moment we will have a second wave, some people just carrying on as if it wasn't around. So many people still not wearing masks :( . I understand we cannot close down the world for ever and we will be a long time recovering from this. I dont think I would have a covid vaccine at the moment, because I don't see how we can tell what the long term effects could be, we are still trying to work out how this virus behaves. I still continue to go out as little as possible but I do have to shop for food etc. I would say I'm a bit ott sometimes but I try to keep my hubby as safe as I can. It does scare me.
Clkd - I put money away each month from January for Cmas, my sons have money as their main pressie and  If I see something in the year I buy it and put it away. Im always  finished by end October!

Hi Penguin99. It seems your hubby has been given wrong information and should check this with his GP. It's important he's protected if he's had to shield.

Thanks,  when he had to have his hepatitis injection so he could start his treatment the nurse at the docs said it was live :o I will check :)
Just googled, I see what you mean. Speaking to his consultant soon so will ask

The nasal spray version is definitely live.

Sometimes if the immune system is compremissed flu vaccination is ineffective.  It's the immune systems interaction with the vaccine which produces antibodies.  If the immune system is too weak the result is poor.

Yes hubby's immune system is compromised,  just googling a bit more and it says he must not have the 'live' version ,  but on reading further it says about an inactivated vaccine.  I have no medical knowledge and went off what we were told, last winter when he was at the day unit, flu vaccine was mentioned and he was told he couldn't have it  :-\. Definitely need to look into this. Thanks all, we wouldn't of known. It can be very dangerous for him if he catches it. What a nightmare ::)
I had swine flu, omg awful, thought I was going to die. Had to take tamiflu, it took weeks to get over, wouldn't wish it on anyone  :'(

I'm sorry you have all of this worry Penguin. My friend has secondary cancer and had to shield due to her immune system but has been advised to have the flu jab as she also did last year.

I'm hoping there's an egg-free option as that's what's prevented me having it in the past due to an egg sensitivity.

Hi Taz2, I hope your friend is keeping safe, my mum also has cancer so is shielding too,  its so very difficult at this time for everyone but so much harder for shielders. I know I'm very overprotective but I can't help it. Some people just don't understand or choose to ignore how awful this virus is. We know of 5 people who have sadly passed away due to covid, the youngest of which was just 22 :'( . I just hope it all blows over soon but unfortunately I don't think this will be the case :'( :'(

Penguin, let us know what the outcome is.  I expect others are in a similar situation with conflicting information.

Teresa, can you not get a free one from your GP.  It doesn't seem right you have to pay, in your situation?
Title: Re: Winter Corona-Virus and 'flu

Anything else is a coincidence.

Nope - I have knowledge of five people, well known to me, who were really ill after the 'flu jab - i.e. MiL as stated.  Because no one believes these patients no one has bothered to research side effects.   ??  'a coincidence' for MinL that she was ill - 3 years running - immediately after the 'flu jab ?? when she had never had 'flu B4 and didn't after  :-\.   It's like other myths, until someone actively investigates patients concerns by listening to them, the myth will continue.

I will continue wearing my mask and keeping well away from others.  If we all wear a mask the jab won't be necessary.  Why would anyone want something else in their system when their body is already compromised  :-\

I’m booked in for the flu jab in October. I have to have it as I have asthma which has resulted in hospitalisation with respiratory infections in recent years. I haven’t had side effects, even though I am intolerant of eggs. My daughter can’t have it as she is allergic of eggs along with dairy. Makes taking medication of any kind tricky for her. She had to be on the ball when she had pre eclampsia, as the doctors didn’t seem to have a clue. They prescribed meds with lactose in them each time. It’s not taken seriously unless you have anaphylactic attacks.

I don't know anyone who's wearing a mask every minute of when they're out

I do :) i have p3 masks, always wear them when I leave the car, then when I get back in my car its sanitiser then remove mask. When hubby has to go to hospital,  we look like aliens ;D , i don't care though.  I hope you're keeping safe :foryou:  it is so very hard and a real worry.
Taz2, hopefully won't be too long before you can give her a hug.

Mum is doing OK, dad just researching and thinks he's getting her better :P but we let him think that, maybe his way of coping. Things have been a little upset lately between them & me, but I'm just keeping back for now.

Hubbys consultant should be calling this month so we will ask him.
Stay safe everyone xx

I had to go to town for the first time since March! I was handed my new glasses on the first day of lock down without being fitted and they slid down my nose and were in danger of falling off if I bent down, so I carried on wearing my old ones. Unfortunately I had a silly accident with the old ones and stood on them! So had no choice but to get the new ones sorted. They fit beautifully now. I was pleasantly surprised to see that nearly everyone was wearing a mask, socially distancing and being consider stepping back when going through doors.

Still feel vulnerable due to severe asthma with infection, but feel more confident about going out more now. Time to make a dental appointment!

Sorry to learn of your abscess Teresa and with everything else you are going through. I hope that you will be able to be seen soon though.

It's all a bit of a nightmare. I'm scared of going at the best of times but early in lock down I lost two crowns - they were already just hanging on (by the skin of their teeth  ;D) so over the next few months what was left sort of disintegrated so I know that I am now faced with two extractions and then the dilemma of working out what to do next. Implants are obviously the way to go, if there is enough bone left, but the cost is prohibitive I'm afraid. I just need to change my mind-set on what dentures mean! Positivitity!

Not many realise that implants mean that the jaw bone has something to work against which keeps it healthy.  Without teeth the gum recedes and there is a risk of losing all the teeth ....... bit like brisk walking to stave off osteoporosis.  Eventually the plate becomes ill fitting and may rub .........

Cost should be negotiable ;-).  Although we don't have children and were able to opt for implants, I would never put my dental health at risk as long as we can afford it.  There's a lot of technology and skill involved, a dentist has to have specialist training and titanium don't come cheap ;-)

I dreaded visits until we found our current Dental Surgeon  :-*

Mine cost £3,500 each - 9 years ago.  I had 3 done ;-). DH also had 3 done, his were a little more expensive as he was 3 months behind.  There are HP terms in most Surgeries, worth discussing B4 writing off the possibility.

As people haven't been able to go on holiday this year why not treat yourself to health care?  I know that we are lucky but I would forgo a lot of things in order to keep my smile healthy ;-)

Our surgery are still saying over 65s and the venerable only.

As the vaccine was pre ordered a while ago they have no extra stock.

One good thing (for me) is the change to being able to see up to 6 people indoors from multiple households instead of only two. This means that all three of my sons can visit us at the same time for the first time since March. That's the only good thing though.

Apparently there R more people in Hospital with C-19 than B4 March.  However, no one seems to explain whether these are positive tests for C-19 as sufferers weren't tested as easily from November-March.

Now we have a 3-tiered system  :-\ ............
