After years of dealing with progesterone intolerance on a variety of different HRT's, I asked my GP if I could try the vaginal Utrogestan/ Oestrogel regime. After a telephone consultation with a Gynaecologist (who had to later consult with the menopause clinic) I have received a prescription in the post prescribing vaginal Utrogestan 100mg daily and 2 pumps of Oestrogel. They have advised switching from my current sequential HRT (which I take as I cannot tolerate a daily does of progesterone) to a continuous regime (as I am 55 and don't have natural bleeds)
Dr Louise Newson advocates that if used vaginally, the 100mg dose should be halved by using every other night for continuous, or 100mg every night for 2 weeks for sequential.
I am worried that the 100mg every night vaginally as prescribed might be too much for me? Also, I am so worried about the side effects of using this continuously I wondered if I should try it sequentially at first, but what would the dosage be? 200mg for 14 days or 100mg as Dr Newson suggests?
I'm very confused and would really appreciate hearing about what dosage others use who have this vaginally.
Thanks in advance :)

hi there, Im post menopausal ( 7 years) and tried various pills n patches. I prefer a continuos regime ie no breaks from either estrogen or progesterone ( utrogestan)
hope i can be helpful . I've been using utrogestan caps 100mgs vaginally, every night for nearly 3 years, it suits me very well, no side effects . I took it orally initially , same dose ( same capsule) but became depressed and spotty! . When i swopped to vaginal use it took a few months to settle the break through bleeding. Ive had annual uterine scans and all ok re thickness of lining. I use estrodot patches 50mcg changed twice a week . I also tried to use the utrogestan 100mgs every other night but had break through bleeding so the 100mgs every night suits me . It does appear to be trial and error until you find something that suits , which hopefully you will .

Hi Traceylr, I tried utrogestan vaginally just for 2 nights instead of daily orally, as I seems to have abdominal issues on it beacuse I have gallstones?....but it seemed to come out and felt all slimy outside vagina? I also had a clump of something (the shell?) came out after a few days.
Is this normal or is my body not absorbing it??
I'm 10 years post meno and started on the Utrogestan and Estrogel 9 months ago. I do a conti regime as don't want a bleed.
Thanks.
Hope it works for you heljanejo!

hi there Julia,
Using it vaginally you need to push it in as far as you can. I use an applicator i bought from the pharmacist , its supposed to be used to deliver estrogen gel into the vagina but i found it holds the capsual pefectly so i use that ( it looks a bit like the 'syringes' that come with kids medicine syrups but without the markings) . Yes expect some 'leakage' usually on waking after having a wee, its the gelatine shell that suurounds the liquid utrogestan. I cant say exactly how much I absorb but it must be enough to prevent the uterine lining building up and prevents break through bleeding. I found the advice here all about utrogestan ( and using it vaginally) from another member's ( Hurdity) very informative and well researched posts regarding its use . She has posted this info a few times and its well worth a read. Hope this is helpul .

Hi heljanejo
:welcomemm:
The licensed dose for cyclical use is 200 mgs x 14 days per 28, taken orally. Vaginal use is off licence at the same dose or sometimes halved depending on the indiviual, and what her oestrogen dose is, as well as her womb lining. Better to start at the licensed dose for a few cycles to see how your bleeds are, beofre varying the dose undermedical upservision.
I take 200 mg vaginally for 12 days every approx 6 weeks ( long cycle) which my doc is happy with.
Yes there is a thread on this somewhere.....
Good luck!

I have recently started back on HRT, and am now taking utrogestan vaginally - I use 1 capsule every other night & 2 pumps of oestrogel daily, so far haven’t noticed any side effects 😘👍
