Hello,
Someone here suggested that if you're still having periods your symptoms might be less as there's still some oestrogen activity. So does this mean that we get symptoms because our hormones are and low and this is not because they fluctuate?

No, my symptoms were far worse during peri, especially the last two years. Once my periods stopped the symptoms faded quite quickly over the next few months.

But presumably this happened 12 months after your last period or did it not? I haven't a period since January this year and I have mainly anxiety and low mood. I've started the sixth month and I do hope that things will get better soon.

No, I started feeling better very soon after my last period.
There is a bit of confusion here as to when meno actually happens. You are regard as post meno one year after your last period but that's only because some women can go months between.
As far as I'm concerned if you have gone a whole year clear you are counted as post meno from your last period.

Everyone is different Katine.
Some women have no symptoms until there last period, some have them before and if you are really unlucky you can have them before and after. No way to tell until it happens.

So, in my own case it may not have been my last period and in this case I'm still peri. Or it might be and the symptoms will ease later. As long as they don't linger forever.

Menopause literally means cessation of periods - however, until a lady has been 12+ months without a bleed, she can't consider herself into menopause which lasts for life.
Peri is the years that lead into the final period when symptoms can be awful or nothing at all.
My periods waxed and waned for years - regular, long gaps - once as long as 9 months apart and then it was there again so back to counting ...... no good over-thinking Nature ;) she does what she likes ;D

I was so busy tending to 4 very sick pets :'( for 2 years that lack of periods wasn't really noticed :-\. I knew it was 'The Change' and took the alterations as they arrived. I was advised to eat every 3 hours 24/7 to stop that awful lurch in the gut when the body got hungry.

It's making me impatient as I want this to end sooner than later.

You can't hurry Nature ............ my periods had been heavy, clotty, painful beyond words for years++ so went on the Pill . I was pleased to see the back of all that mess, I never felt them of any use even though I was told I was 'growing up'. :(
What's your particular hurry ? ???

Not having periods anymore is not my worry. I'm worried that my symptoms are going to last forever.

I was like that with depression and anxiety. I lost most of the 1990s. But with a supportive GP, medication, a loving husband I can go out and about, we have a Life ;-)

CLDK, for someone who has clinical depression and anxiety it's amazing the way you cope with it all!

Half a day at a time. Not planning to far ahead. Fixing dates causes my anxiety levels to rise .......

Hi. It was me who mentioned that.
I meant to say that some symptoms caused by the fluctuating hormones of peri will gradually fade once periods finally cease but the other symptoms such as vaginal dryness, hot sweats, insomnia, lacklustre hair, dull skin, fatigue, muscle pain etc can worsen as oestrogen levels drop. Everyone is different. I'm the only one of my close group of friends who has needed HRT and my best friend has never had any flushes, sweats, insomnia etc. Her regular periods just stopped aged 53 with no warning. She still has her amazing energy and weighs the same 8 stone as she did aged 18. She's 66 now so there is always hope!
