Title: Vagifem causing stinging
Post by: Angie61 on June 09, 2020, 04:48:42 PM
Since 1st May 2020 I have been on a regime of 1 vagifem daily  and 1 pump of oestrogel gel until end of August when I next have a consultation with the menopause clinic.  Since day 4 of my new regime I have been burning and stinging on the outer vaginal area.  My GP prescribed Timodene cream for 1 week, followed by Daktacort cream for 1 week, neither worked.  (I do not have thrush.)  I decided to return to using vagifem twice a week instead of daily and found the burning and stinging eased to a bearable level and is definitely better on days when I do not use the vagifem.  I also use YES vaginal moisturiser on the outer vaginal area on a daily basis.
I even found it painful to sit or wear trousers due to the seam rubbing.  (I used to be on a regime of just using vagifem twice a week which did not cause any burning or stinging, with the occasional increase in vagifem when needed due to dryness.
I am on this new regime with a view to being prescribed testosterone in the future.)
Has anyone else found that using both vagifem and oestrogel gel causes an overload to the outer vaginal area resulting in burning and stinging?
Does oestrogel gel alone ease vaginal dryness so I can stop vagifem?

You don't get an overload of oestrogen.

It may be that the vaginal area is dry and as the replacement oestrogen is aggravating the nerve endings.

Have you every used it every night?  The idea is to insert every night for 2 weeks then every 3 or 4th and 5/6th nights.  Some ladies need 'vagifem' nightly as well as 'yes' or 'sylc' products on the outer labia.

Nope.  The important issue is to insert either 'ovestin' or 'vagifem' into the vagina regularly.  To plump up the tissues which eases dryness.  Oestrogel gel should help the outer vaginal areas.

Perhaps that amount of Vagifem does not agree with you. Why was it increased? Some need it daily and others can get away with twice a week. If you have been comfortable on two Vagifem a week just go back to that. Could you wear a skirt instead of trousers, and maybe go commando whenever possible? It's a good idea to let the air circulate.

One pump of Oestrogel is a low dose and I would think it unlikely that it has much impact on VA, but you never know. Many women seem to need both systemic and local treatment.

When I first started with vagifem after the first few weeks I had dreadful burning. It was so bad I had to go the the drs. They changed me onto estriol cream which did help things considerably. I found the cream really messy and the applicator very large so after 3 months the dr suggested I try again with vagifem and this time I didn't have any burning. Maybe because the cream had started to ease the problems.

I have found this in the past when I have increased my Vagifem. I now only use it 3 times a week and along with Olive and Bee (which I have found to be the most soothing for me after lots of trial and error with other creams etc) my VA is comfortable most days.

Agree with plum 54.  I was using Vagifem daily for 8 mos.  I started to have discomfort and the discharge from Vagifem fillers was very irritating so decided to use alternate nights and surprise! I feel much better!  I now realize that sometimes the fillers are the culprits.  I may even slip down to 3 a week😉 and I have very severe VA.
