I have read research on VA and according to several papers on this subject, it seems much more common in women who have NOT had children. I have never had kids (choice made in early adulthood). Thoughts?
-
Maybe quote research? Who was funding it? How long ago.
Unless every woman world wide is asked ;) ::)
-
Just my opinion, but I think it's lack of oestrogen rather than lack of kids ;D

That's probably it ::)
I decided not to have children when I was 8 .........

I'll see if I can link...not very tech savvy but I'll give it a shot. Hopefully I don't accidentally shut down the internet. If I do, oh well don't need Tinder and not on Facebook.😎

Find the name of the Company writing the article. Copy it from the Link in pen and ink then add it to your thread ;-). Dates. Funded by?
-
Sounds interesting if you have a link but I would also be dubious? Can't see how this could occur mechanistically?

I admin a VA group & the majority have had children Vaginal births also.
The reason why this is said is because the vagina has been stretched & potentially doesn't shrink as much, however VA is not just about shrinkage of a vagina it's also external burning, itching, soreness, repeat UTIs, old episiotomies become sore or even splitting, itching etc this has nothing to do with wether a lady has had a baby or not.
-
When I was dx'ed with GSM or VA after ending up in the ER with suspected UTI for the 400th time (ok exaggeration...only 399 times) the NP asked 2 questions: Do I smoke; Have I ever had children vaginally. When I answered no, he explained GSM and how non vaginal births are a risk factor.
-
Maryjane ... That was what I thought too. I have several friends who have not had vaginal births and they don't have any issues.
-
I've never had a vaginal birth. Within months of surgery to remove my ovaries I was diagnosed with VA. X
-
No vaginal births. Researchers have observed that women who have never given birth vaginally are more likely to develop GSM symptoms than women who have had vaginal deliveries.
Who exactly :-\ - no mention of References etc..
I've never been pregnant. Had normal periods. Menopause arrived along with VA. Stop blaming women who have never had children, it's such a taboo >yawn<

Sometimes CLKD I think society frowns on women who have other lives rather than choosing motherhood. Society instills in us from a young age that you are not whole unless you're a Mom. I still find myself being defensive when questioned why I didn't want kids. Not all women are meant to have kids and not all women are maternal. I think what most of us VA ladies want is relief and all the white noise is just that. It is surprising tho
-
I don't see why having a baby influences VA. That's down to a drop in oestrogen :-\
The World was never good enough for my children. I have never regretted my decision and have laughed out loud at some remarks sent my direction ;D. Grandma didn't know if I was being selfish ....... by the time we had discussed at great lenth she didn't know which way was up - I was 13 ;D. I have never been maternal ........... and come from a violent background so decided to stop the rot.

Hi there - thanks for the link Whatsupwiththis. Have had a look and then delved a bit deeper...the title is not quite what the researchh is saying. As Maryjane says - the research refers to vaginal vs non vaginal births not childless women vs mothers. Here is the research but I can't find the full paper just the abstract here:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28440666
However unless there is other research, that was an observational study of approx 125 women matched I think for mean (?) age, age at menarche, and age at menopause. I would want to have a look at the full study and data. However the pH of the vagina was one of the measures as well as perception of symptoms and maturation index amongst other measures.
As always the data show trends and statistical signficance and even if the association is shown it would not follow that ALL such women would get VA. it would only be a percentage. Also the data did not include a similar sized/matched group of women who had never had children ie not been pregnant which would have given a fuller picture I would suggest?

I have had 4 vaginal births and the dreadful VA started when i was around 47 and still having periods.
-
Wow thx. Hurdity for your excellent research. I should have clarified non vaginal births not childless. I should have realized you can still have children in other ways. I was dumbstruck when I was told I was in a high risk group because I hadn't had vaginal births! WTF! What does that have to do with our internal organs. When I started on this long and horrendous journey the only thing I could hear was my mother saying how selfish I was not to bear kids so my child like brain says "yup you got what you deserve". As CLKD said 'taboo'.
Tinkerbell....oh my...4 kids? You should have danced all night!
-
"Other ways to have children" in my case it's called nieces and nephews😁
I was asked if I'd given birth specifically vaginally when I went for mirena coul fitting. But that's more to do with the cervix.
My grandmother used to say to me when i complained of period pains "you need to have a baby, that will sort it out". Bit drastic nan!!
