Hi there I'm 45 and have a history of mental health difficulties, mainly anxiety but have had depression as well.
I have always had pmt but over the past 5 years this has increased significantly and I started having panic attacks, dark thoughts and chest pains the 2 weeks before my period. I have other symptoms that I personally believe are linked to the Peri but my gp says as I have regular periods it can't be and think its pmdd.
I'm now on the 3rd contraceptive pill to try and ease the symptoms, the first 2 I reacted to really badly. I am also on strong anti depressants following a depressive episode a year ago and what I can only describe as a breakdown.
I feel I need hrt as I believe they would really help but am getting no joy. Anyone else going/gone through this? I actually feel the contraceptive pill is more harmful as it takes over rather than replaces? Thank you for taking the time to read xx

I forgot to add I have this constant feeling as though I am being poisoned, like the worst hangover. Pains all over but no one seems to get what I mean?

Im not very knowledgeable about the contraceptive pill, but wouldn't this be making you have regular periods, unless you're on the mini pill?

I had the same problem. If you don't have irregular periods or hot flushes they don't think it isn't meno related. Read up on all the symptoms so you can talk with authority and ask if they have a gp who specialises in it. If you get no joy from them you can ask to be referred to a meno clinic though you may have a long wait. Make sure it's meno not gynae as many gynecologists are clueless about meno. I was 57 when they told me it couldn't be peri because I had regular periods - you'd have thought my age would be a bit of a clue!

Ask your Surgery to refer you to a menopause clinic. Not to a gynaecologist as they often know as much/little as GPs.
GPs still believe that unless a woman is having hot flushes she can't be in peri! Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary useful. Something to take to your GP. Maybe have a well-woman chat with the Practice Nurse who may be more knowledgeable about menopause.
Browse round. Take notes.
