Hi you fantastic lot!
Just a quick query : if you've always experienced heavy heavy periods, does it then mean you'll have a harsh menopause experience?!?! ;D

Hello ptsheldon
It's an interesting point that you raise. If heavy periods, PMS etc indicate that our hormonal changes are especially volatile when menstruating then perhaps it's no surprise if they are just as volatile when we reach menopause. If so the trick is working out how to fix it.
Obviously I don't know the answer to that one but I've read that in the past Japanese women complained of very few menopausal symptoms. This may have been for cultural reasons or something in their traditional diet or lifestyle . It would be interesting to study the subject and the results could be very useful but as menopause is not a disease I doubt any research would be done. There is a book by Dr Neal Barnard called Your Body in Balance ( I think I've got the title right) where he looks at problems like infertility but I don't have the book myself so I'm not sure what else it covers. I think he has another book coming out next year about balancing hormones but I may be wrong about that. If I can get hold of his books I will let everyone know what studies have been done and what we can learn from the science available.
Take care.

Hi ptssheldon,
I had horrendous painful heavy periods right from the start, age 13 and was only ok when on the pill. I had a few years period free when pregnant obviously and then whilst breast feeding. Pre menopause my periods got really bad then settled before i finally went into menopause. As soon as my periods slowed down i can honestly say i had very few problem going trough menopause, the odd hot flush and palpatations if i got stressed now and then, but that was it.

Hello again ladies
Me again. I've just looked up the book that I referred to in my post and it is called Your Body in Balance. The author is Neal Barnard and it will be published in February next year.
Take care everyone.

I guess it depends what you mean by harsh? Do you mean in the bleeding sense?
I just think it's all a bit hit and miss, I would say I've been affected by more symptoms that don't relate to bleeding at this stage! Headaches, nausea, joint pain and being emotional!!
Where are you at on your journey? x
