Title: Halloween!
Post by: stellajane on October 31, 2019, 04:59:02 PM
It's that time of year again.  Do you participate? We don't - we'll make a point of not answering the doorbell tonight. OH usually goes into the hall and yells "not tonight thank you" which I find very funny. Trick or treaters should only be going to houses that have obvious decorations up in my opinion and leave the rest of us in peace.

I absolutely HATE Halloween.  It's just total Americanised rubbish. We usually but a notice in our front window, saying No Thanks, but some still knock.  This year I've blocked the front path with a plant pot, for those that can't read.

I don't understand, that they can't get, that not everyone wants to participate.  Me dear departed epileptic dog used to be terrified.

It's just begging with meneces. And all that throw away plastic.

Our shops don't sell flour, eggs or sugar this week .........

I did say 'Americanised '. What we did when we were children was totally different.

Best idea was on Jeremy  Vine this morning - coat an onion on a stick in chocolate.  ;D
We don't want our kids to knock on stranger's doors and demand sweets any other time.

We live down a dark lane with only 3 houses and during winter it looks like a scene from midsummer murders so we don't get ant kids knocking lol

In our old house we'd buy fun size choc bars for them

When i was a child my parents were really strict about ‘begging' so I never got the chance to do it but took my kids to decorated houses x

We did penny for the guy when we were kids, but only in our front garden so we only got a few pennies from our parents. They viewed it as a way to keep us entertained for a few hours. Similarly with carving turnips, although that took much longer than carving pumpkins!

I hate it too, only had 1 tonight,at teatime, and had to say sorry i'm on the phone which I was ,no one else has been and it looks like my house is in darkness as my living room is at the back and kitchen at the front, so ,looks like i'm out, also says in the kitchen window beware of the dog, which I haven't got now, but keep the sign there

I love it too but in our village the rule is not to knock if there is no lit pumpkin or other display. I had over 25 children visiting tonight. Their costumes and make up were really amazing. They were all accompanied by adults and were very polite.

I agree that the Americanisation of it is typically absolutely ghastly - and yes all that plastic - dreadful. Supermarkets selling rubbish for a month beforehand. However I absolutely loved it both as a child (when it was completely different) and when my children were growing up. We used to make stuff from crepe paper etc or just from the dressing up box, or old sheets. Make masks or whatever. I used to make toffee apples and loads of spooky type food, and my kids would invite their friends over and they would gallop about woooh-ing (ghosts) or pretending to be witches. I used to do bobbing apples and other games and they would gather leaves and stir up potions to make spells.  I used to decorate the house with black crepe paper stuff, hanging bats, spiders webs and all sorts, and we used to have a mass pumpkin hollowing out session and light them up. There was none of this knowing on doors lark. Now the children have grown up and gone and I have no grand-children I must admit now the novelty has worn off so haven't bothered for the past couple of years! As we live in a small village there were no trick-or-treaters - at least at our end! It's a great tradition though if you avoid the commercialisation, do your own thing and make stuff! Like Christmas really  ::) Ooops the C word...

My husband bought a fair sized tub of sweets in the week. We ate all the good ones and left the boiled sweets and lollies to give out if any one knocked the door.
Only had one knock but we were eating our evening meal so we didn't bother answering  ;D

Sadly  :-\  ;D we have sweeties left over ........ no one tapped the door.  House opposite kind of dressed up but it's all plastic, however, that can be kept for next year and not go into landfill ;-).

In our village the children only visit houses that are decorated, have pumpkins out etc. Hubby & I went out for a meal last night so we closed the gates, then when we were back, we left gates open re-lit our ceramic ghost & pumpkin, but as I was so tired & desperate to get in my PJ's I left the bucket of sweets (left over from when teenager was given a tub & never ate) on doorstep but we had only 3 lots from hearing them approach, but they all went. As children we never went trick or treating, my son when younger went out with friends & the older ones looked after them & us adults had a good old party of our own!

They won't touch em again...😉. 🤣😂🤣😂

I wonder how many of those families who are complaining about the loss of the extra £20.00 will go out and buy pumpkins to cut up rather than eat  :-\

It's only the outside that gets carved though so you can still make something with the pumpkin flesh - if you like pumpkin that it is - not sure I've ever really found a recipe I liked.

Do people use it though?  I have grown 4 this year :) - 1 has been eaten.  The marrow weighs 6lb and a bit.  DH scoops out the seeds and keeps or puts them into the compost.  Then roasts with a lot of black pepper and olive oil - with other veg..  Any left over is eaten cold or mashed into a soup.  The importance is plenty of seasoning.

We don’t bother with Halloween, but do enjoy videos of my grandchildren who live in the USA. Of course, it’s very much celebrated over there with going out dressed up and trick and treating with the adults supervising.

When my daughter was little, I made her a wonderful witch birthday cake (Jane Asher novelty cake book). She took the photos of it to school and I got a request from her teacher as to whether I was prepared to make a cake for the class Halloween party. Of course I did. The next year it was stopped because some parents complained about it being a pagan thing!  :-\ Not even a church school! Better stop reading The worst witch and other witchy stories then!

It's an English 'thing' that went to the States and came back.  Apparently.  I saw a woman with 8 large 🎃 s in her trolley, I had to button up or I would have asked her to share the recipe  :-\

DH puts ginger and garlic with most things ;-)
