Title: Not looking forward to winter
Post by: Focus on October 27, 2019, 12:11:37 PM
I'm not really a winter person. I feel cold all the time pretty much anyway, and in winter it's much worse - my fingernails go a sort of blue/purple colour a lot of the time.

I hate the long, dark days and I feel really low and unmotivated a lot of the time.

I'm really not like that in life in general, I'm bursting with energy and really positive.

I just love the sunshine and feeling warm.

Maybe it's just feeling harder this year because of all this perimenopause stuff that's going on with me?

Anyone else not looking forward to winter?

Me, I hate it. Cold, wet, dark and miserable. Spent a few years globe trotting and wondering why I came back to the UK.

That's me all over except for the "motivated person in real life"!  ;D  The only time I am one of those is when I am on holiday and not because I am on holiday (work comes with me when I am on holiday!) but because it will be hot and sunny.  Even at it's hottest the UK is only just about right! but when it is over 70 and above and not humid, it seems I can do anything all of the time.  It's not psychological either because on occasion I have been lucky enough to go away for 3/4 weeks at a time and it doesn't drop off.  Like that as a child too!  Unfortunately can only go on holiday every other year and this time its has been 3 years since the last one  :'(

Cold dark nasty winters, it has got harder as I have got older Focus.  Wish I had the money to live somewhere warm Sheila. On occasion I have even thought about staying in somewhere like Turkey, or Tenerife or well anywhere where it stays over 70 for most of the year!!  I feel so good I could probably manage to doss on the beach without too much trouble :)

So glad I'm not alone in this!

I totally get what you mean about 'even at its hottest...'. I like it 30 degrees centigrade plus, and it's never that in the part of the UK where I live...not even for one day a year.

Oh well, I've been playing with some makeup this morning. It's helped :)

I love warm weather and travelling  abroad but once it's here I really don't mind winter.  We are a dry county so at least it's not often wet compared to other  parts of the country where it seems to rain all the time.

I rather like closing my curtains mid afternoon, putting the heat on and cooking hearty stews and casseroles, jacket potatoes and winter veg.  I get loads of crochet done in winter and our house is lovely and warm and cozy but we still get loads of winter sunshine in due to the position of the house and having huge windows.  I also get through loads more books.  In the summer there are always jobs to do outside which take priority over crochet and reading.

I actually go on more walks in winter than I do in  the summer months too.

I feel like I am in a comforting cocoon when I am closed in for the winter.  👍

I love the winter and feel energised and just at ease somehow. My mood dips in March and I hate the signs of Spring. April is a really low time. By May I'm beginning to get used to it and then June has the longest day so once I'm over that hump things begin to get better.

I think it's called reverse SAD. I need a 'gloom box' to sit in front of in the summer  ;D

I HATE Winter because of the 'C' word  >:( all that exception to do what others want.

When we had C.mas here we were the happiest in the Winter than we had ever been.  I love the Autumn colours.  I like the cold days when I can wrap up but cold and wet I DO NOT DO!  Add wind to that  >:(

I love Feb. when snowdrops etc. begin to peep through and there is Hope.  When I can hang laundry on the line to blow in cool sunshine.  When I can sit by the ponds with a cuppa even if well wrapped up.  I do miss the beach in the Winter  :'(

Wow, that's really interesting.   I used to have a neighbour whose favourite month was autumn.

Another thing I like about winter is lovely boots, scarves, hats etc.

I find boots make my legs and feet much colder.

I have lots of scarves, wooly hats and gloves - in the vehicles and utility room, hall and porch - ready to grab on the impulse to go out.

I love winter  ;D Skiing, making snowman, snowball fights.... sadly from 5 years I couldn't do that in UK... only rain, and 2 days per year when it was snowing  :-\ Yeah - I hate British winter :(
When there is a snow days ale longer, as snow is reflecting any light. Meaby I will move to Scotland.  ::)

I dont mind winter if its blue sky cold frosty days, i hate the wet, damp rainy grey days, they make me feel very low.  Im definately a summer person and the hotter the better. Retiring end of next summer so will be spending more time in Lanzarote during the winter months with family and cant wait. I hate it when we put the clocks back too, get up in the dark, home from work in the dark too, i only see my garden at weekends.

Yes I love boots and scarves. I also love short days. I enjoy getting up while it's still dark as it feels as if I'm in at the beginning of the day. I love watching the light starting to filter across the garden as the day begins and then I really like watching dusk descend at the end of the day. I don't seem to notice that in the summer and I'd have to get up at 4 each morning.  ;D

A few days ago we were driving through early morning mist and it was filtering through dust - like proper sun rays  :-*

I hate winter I don't do cold ❄️ wet 💦 or grey 🌫

There have been years when I can actually feel my mood lowering, fortunately we are now in a position to go abroad a few times over the winter months and that certainly helps.

Like Dierdre when we finally!!! retire we're going to spend winters abroad in the sun.
The plan is to go in November and come back at the end of March.
We will come home for  a flying visit at Christmas to see family and friends  but won't be staying long then we will go back.

I hate winter too. It seems to have started early in Yorkshire (I realise that technically it's Autumn) it's rained here nearly every day this month! I struggle with cold, wet, damp and grey skies. I am literally a different person when the weather is nice.

It's my husband's dream to live somewhere sunny, and we're in a position to move abroad next year if we find somewhere we like. My problem is making the leap. I have children and grandchildren who I love dearly and I am very involved in their lives. I also love this country, it's culture and everything it offers, I realise how lucky we are to live here.

We're looking at Tenerife in January, and Costa del Sol in June so who knows, I'm trying to keep an open mind. I do know though that if we had decent weather in the UK I wouldn't even think about leaving x

Im worried we may not beable to stay that long, Lanzalover, with Brexit and the freedom of movement. I may have got it wrong but wont we be limited to 90 days out of 180 without a visa?

Will it matter Dierdre?  It's paper work.  Shouldn't actually stop people travelling?

A couple I knew in the 1990s went to Malta from November until March and had a holiday home here.  Family travelled to see them .  I wouldn't be travelling back for C.mas  ;)

Bought a cheap Chiminea from Home Base yesterday. Sat outside at sunset with a glass of (Lidl) mulled wine watching the flames.  Was very nice (until the sun went down - then it was freezing).

Im thinking of buying a patio heater so i can still sit outside when its not raining, we could even have winter BBQs, hate being indoors through the winter months no matter how cosy i try to make it i still feel closed in.

Hi Dierdre

At the moment you can stay up to three months at a time so if we come home at Christmas and then return around 30th Dec we can then stay another 90 days.

I'll worry about the Brexit ramifications later ( please don't spoil my plans yet   ;D )

There won't be any Brexit ramifications - all these places need UK visitors and our money- whatever happens the system will designed to make sure that tourists, expats etc can still do what they want because business will have to follow the money!  It always works out like that...a system that is not profitable doesn't last long. xx You'll all be fine! xx

I feel absolutely freezing today. I've felt like this all day, since before I got out of bed. I just can't seem to get warm (or even just not feel cold).

I can't remember if I felt like this last year, and if I always just feel like this anyway.

I really want to go to the gym tonight, but the thought of taking my trousers off and putting my leggings on isn't the most appealing at the moment.

I know but a wood burner would not go down well with the neighbours.

Sorry Lanza, im sure we'll be fine and it'll be nice to have a few days back to catch up and check on everything around Christmas, i got a flight out there last year for £14.99 on 29th December, back in time for New Year.

I HATE really hot weather, it drains me.  At least there is plenty of sport to watch on TV during our Summer ;-)

Chilly this morning but as I like it: Autumn colours - tick.  Blue sky - tick. Calm air - tick.

Re Brexit (and it's looking like a hard Brexit) and freedom of movement, it's important that people are aware that things are going to change.

As EU members, UK nationals can spend up to 183 days per year in another EU state without being required to become tax resident although this is not strictly enforced.

Post Brexit, this will change because the UK will no longer have freedom of movement and UK nationals will only be able to spend 90 days in the Schengen zone in a six month period.  Unlike the current situation, passports will probably be zapped post Brexit so there will be a record of how long you have been in the Schengen zone.

These are the rules for third country nationals as things stand at the moment.   The UK may be able to negotiate a degree of flexibility but I wouldn't be too hopeful given outline of the withdrawal agreement and the political declaration.

To get an idea of what you will be up against post Brexit, check out the rules for Australian, US and Canadian nationals.

Really good post Mary G, and really informative. Hubby and I are watching Brexit with interest for precisely this reason, what it means for freedom of movement. It's very difficult to know when's the best time to move as it's all so changeable x

A friend of my husband and his wife, have a house in the south of France.  They go several times a year for a few weeks at a time.  Apparently the local estate agent told him that the amount of property bought by Brits has sky rocketed.  Looks like people are leaving before the door shuts.

Well my favourite season is late spring - May actually - when the spring flowers are well established and the leaves on the trees are peeping out from their winter hibernation. Such a promise of long days and warm evenings ahead - always full of hope! I just love the summer too with lots of warm sunshine, gardening, flowers and vegetables burgeoning, being able to go about in vests and short shorts getting my vit D, festivals, BBQs, holidays and the sea.

However....I also love the autumn - the beautful changing colours and the wild winds, apples, preserving and cooking things I've grown and snuggling up in front of warm fires watching good dramas on TV, keeping warm, bringing out scarves and gloves and generally looking forward to C'mas with family returning and all that entails. I find the worst month is January as it then seems a long way until warmth but at least there is sometimes snow (not often in SW England) which is great fun, and the days are getting longer. February can be worse ( cold grey and bleak) but then not long until spring and anyway the snowdrops and daffs are out and I can start sowing my tomato seeds.

What I'm saying is - Focus - try to find something to look forward to every season, every month, every week, every day - and yes peri-menopause and all its horrible effects can try to bring us down - but don't let it and see how positive you can be every single day - just one thing each winter day - even if it is counting down the days until the solstice - the turning of the year when the days start to lengthen again. :)

Hurdity x

I knit socks  for all of us and have done for years. They are better than any shop bought socks and the self patterning wool is stunning.  You can make them to fit your feet exactly unlike shop bought socks which ruck up or are too tight. They wash beautifully in the machine, they don't make your feet sweat or smell and they look great too.  I wear them under boots and my feet are never cold.
