Title: digestive problems
Post by: Dougal on July 28, 2019, 06:31:22 PM
I am still peri menopausal at 54. I am now experiencing digestive problems, acid taste in my mouth. I am taking lansaprozal, but this doesn't seem to be working. Does anyone else experience this problem.

Yep.

As oestrogen levels drop the muscles may become lax = hiatus hernia ...... which allows acid back into the trout causing heartburn.

I find 'rennies' or 'milk of magnesia' helps as well as not eating too close to bed time.

I get this too Dougal, it's quite common unfortunately and definitely started getting worse in my early 40s when I believe my peri started.

I tried the protein pump inhibitors after one particular time when my innards felt like they were actually boiling! I was on them a year but it didn't really do much for me and I was still having to take Gaviscon at night.

I have to be a little careful with my diet, nothing too spicy (which suits me anyway) and eating little and often. I just have a normal rennie type tablet before bed if it's too troublesome. Sleep propped up a bit too and as CLKD states try not to eat too close to bedtime.

Hope you feel better soon x

Hi Dougal, I was on Omeprazole for years (I'm 41yrs), suffer from IBS & reflux, was taken off Omeprazole by Immunology as they thaught it might be causing my symptoms (peri menopause) put onto Ranitadine instead. I used to take peppermint capsules also, stopped these since started taking probiotics & generaly my reflux is much better controlled. Although I am trying an experiment today & tomorrow (not taking Turmeric supplement on fast days) I have a suspicion it makes me more refluxy whereas other non fast days I'm fine & have been mainly since starting HRT & improving my diet & losing weight, all contributory factors (poor diet & being over weight!) I hope you find something that helps or a combination.

But if you hadn't swallowed the trout first you might be OK...  :)

I had the same problems. I have/had acid reflux and a hiatus hernia for years and have been on Omeprazol, lansaprozal and ranitadine. I've had lots of scans too. I found that as each one stopped working and I got moved on to the next one. In the end I decided to try the natural route and am more or less acid reflux free. I did that by weaning myself off of the last one I was on which is Ranitadine and started drinking kefir which has loads of good bacteria in it for the gut. I cut out caffeine and spicy food and a few other bits and bobs. I also took a supplement called DGL before food and also Mastic Gum with food. I think these two supplements have been miracle workers. I also drank aloe vera for a while which I found soothing. I did ocaccionaly have to take Gaviscon but tbh I am pretty much cured now. Anyway, hope that helps.

Yes I know, kefir has an acquired taste. Its not for everyone! I found the aloe vera quite soothing and I seem to remember that it coats the esophagus. I really like the Pukka Aloe Vera and its not sour tasting. (Some are quite disgusting).

I really do think the hero's were DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) and Mastic Gum.

Good luck.

Double page article in the Times yesterday on why we should all be eating a yoghurt daily, it's worth reading. I have full fat greek yoghurt & fruit with flaxseed for breakfast 5 mornings a week. Discussed in relaton to general health benefits and which yoghurts have which benefits, worth a read!

Was it LIVE yoghurt ......... I like the Greek type.  Rarely mix it with anything as we pick raspberries and strawberries from the garden when in season.

There was mention of live yoghurt, I took the article into work for my colleagues to read. You might be able to access it online.

Hello ladies
Thought I would just write to let you know that I have started the DGL - but word of caution - Do NOT take if you suffer high blood pressure. Fortunately I do not. Early days yet, as just started taking it.
Thank you for all your interesting replies - I also eat a natural yoghurt daily.

I was peri still at 56 and started to have lots of stomach issues, alongside headaches. I now take HRT and am much improved. Also, like others I have a bio yoghurt with fruit everyday. I am also careful about what I eat, though despite keping a food diary can't pin point triggers, apart from take out curry which I avoid or have a small portion of. I also think my stomach is worse when I'm stressed.

Yep - the gut is the 2nd brain so is affected by stress.

Could you be sensitive to sodium gluten whatever is used in ethnic cookery?  It used to be added to most dishes in restaurants  >:(

? mono sodium glutanate ?

Hi, i've been reading all the posts about digestive problems.

The top of my stomach feels very tender & painful.  I've had heartburn for a couple of years now & most times its controlled with otc Randitine but for the last few days this pain won't go away. I feel slightly nauseous too. All checks at the Dr's have come back normal.
I think about the pain all the time & I don't know if maybe it's stress related.
My gp gave me Esomeprazole but have read unpleasant things about the side effects.
Does anyone else have this pain? If so how do I get rid of it?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Same here last week the top of my stomach is so uncomfortable.
So bloated it's like everything lays on the top of my stomach and doesn't move.
I have recently taken three lots of antibiotics for a uti but don't know if it's that or my hihatus hernia.

Dougal do let us know how you get on with the DGL. It worked well for me.

The pain at the top of the belly - is that the gap between the lower rib cage, that's where I get sore.

I find that 'Rennies' or Milk of Magnesia eases symptoms of heartburn and reflux.  DH had omeprazole for 2 years then stopped when the original symptoms went.

Short term use can ease symptoms.  I have had Colpermin peppermint capsules too - it would take 3 each day to sort symptoms and my poo smelt of peppermint.  The idea was to take them within an hour of my main meals to layer the digestive tract.

Thanks CLKD I will get milk of magnesia & give it a try. That's exactly where I feel tender.

I found a bottle of DGL in the cupboard, I completely forgot I bought them so thanks Honeybean have had 2 today & so far so good😀

One thing at a time ?

When I take milk of magnesia within half an hour of eating ;-) to line the gut.

I will carry on with the DGL for a while, if  the uncomfortable tender feeling comes back I'll try milk of magnesia, I'm much happier trying these & hopefully will not need the Esomeprazole.

Have had a very busy day today  & haven't had time to think if the pain was there🤔so do wonder if I think about things far to much😕

Nope.  That pain is real!  Omeprazole is OK for short-term use.  It depends on what I eat and when sometimes as to whether it's there/not.
