Title: Nice guidelines....
Post by: Serena1972 on July 19, 2019, 02:08:44 PM
Hi Ladies...

I'm going through the dreaded Peri Menopause just now.... :'(  Any advice is appreciated. Will the GP follow the NICE guidelines, when prescribing HRT?

Serena x :'( :'(

So is she refusing to give you hrt Serena1972 because there aren't any guidelines in Scotland or is she just another ignorant GP..the kind you can find all over the UK who doesn't believe in hrt and/or know anything about it?

GGGRRR - speak to a Pharmacist? He/she should know as well as being aware who is good at prescribing HRT in your area ;-) or send an e-mail to t he British Menopause Society or Dr Currie on here?

Hi Serena- I'm in Scotland and get patches and Utrogestan from my GP but this was only after a private consultation.
I think an e mail consultation with Dr Currie might be your best bet as she is based in Scotland and should be able to give you guidance. X

Im in Scotland Serena1972, not heard that nonsence before and I work in the NHS. See if there is a GP in a practice who has an interest in the menopause, if not ask GP to discuss you with local menopause specialist, that's what mine did if they are that ignorant they most definately should be discussing your symptoms & asking specialists advice, that is why we have specialists & usually they are quite happy to advise on treatment etc without having seen you. My GP twice emailed specialist and she got back to him the same day with advice re HRT regime. Don't stand for it. I had 3 years of doctors messing me about, if I'd known then what I know now!! Good luck x

I've noticed over the years that the NHS has ‘fragmented'bit by bit. With devolution, ( Scotland and Wales) and clinical commissioning groups they have all been able to set their own ‘priorities' roughly translated as ‘the post code lottery'.  It is all smoke and mirror's for cost cutting. It also dilutes criticism of any one body, because they all blame each other
The Scottish government has possibly opted out of ‘NICE' guidance ( you could check on Scot gov health websites)and sets its own priorities- which then sets what GP's are allowed to prescribe ON the NHS. It does not affect what they can or will/will not prescribe off the nhs
Soooooo the upshot. Ask you GP if the NHS funds HRT, if not could you do it privately.

Oh yes, for sure- we pay taxes on the premise that the NHS is free at the point of delivery.
What is never discussed or addressed it what is deemed to be ‘available ‘ on the nhs. If it is available then of course it is free- so things are made ‘unavailable ‘ through smoke screen of ‘effectiveness'. It is soo transparent, because cheap drugs are always immediately available.....funny that
It really is all a game that George Orwell would be proud of with the NUspeak..........
Politician always tell the truth don't they, always act in selfless service to the people............

Hi Serena

A really good retort for her might be something along the lines of - ‘so an arbitrary line on a map means my body doesn't work the same?'

Utter nonsense - find another gp if you can xx

This isn't to do with devolution.  NHS Scotland has always been separate from NHS England and Wales.  We have a fabulous health service up here in Scotland.  I think this is more to do with finding a GP who is amenable to HRT.   As mentioned already, it might be worth asking your practice to see whichever doctor has an interest in menopause, otherwise to be referred to someone.

By the way, some ladies in Scotland will be interested to know that my friend has just informed me the Utrogestan is now available on the NHS up here :-)

Good luck!!  Don't give up.   I'm sure you'll find a doctor who can help.
