Title: menopause magnets do they work
Post by: H C on July 15, 2019, 01:36:18 PM
im not allowed to take hrt due to been high risk for strokes but my hot flushes are a nightmare.  my doctor mentioned that you can buy a menopause magnet that you attach to your underwear  so just want to know if anyone has tried these and do they work.

Do they work?  Depends what you want it to do.  If you want something that attaches you to your supermarket trolley, they are fantastic.  ;D

There is probably a hrt combo to suit you somewhere. As for the magnet- I am an ultra cynic where this sort of thing is concerned. Snake oil merchants cashing in on people's vulnerable times and making a LOT of money. When you google stuff the adverts that appear along side will always ‘solve' everything for a price.....
Who knows if this stuff works, but my feeling that if it did work then there would be a lot of ladies out there very attached to each other- LOL can you imagine it. If it were that simple.....
Is this magnet cheap- if so give it a whirl, research purposes and let us all know.
What's the old saying - if it sounds to be good to be true......it probably is

Hi hc, I tried the menopause magnet three years ago when I thought it was menopausal symptoms, it is diificult for me to say whether I noticed any benefit as I was on various medications at the same time. I did think fairly recently of trying it again as my sleep was still a big issue but thankfully this seems to be on the mend. I have spoken to a few colleagues who have used it and found it helpful.

Your DOCTOR told you this? Is that the best he/she can come up with? If a man came in with erectile dysfunction would he be told to attach a magnet to his willy?

See a different doctor or ask to be referred to a menopause clinic. You might be able to use a transdermal HRT, which carries less risk.

thanks for your replies.  yes it was my female doctor who told me as have also been diagnosed with a fast heart rate.  high blood pressure and clinical depression plus the menopause..  so i dont want to take the risk either as already take too many tablets (already feel like a walking rattle  ;D).  it was my doctor who also told me about this magnet as her other patients have mentioned it

Transdermal HRT does not increase your stroke risk, so you can use it if your BP is controlled with medication.

Basically the magnets aren't strong enough to do anything, it's made the owner big £££ & if it does work it's placebo HOWEVER placebo is fine.

This is from various medics who have said the same.

Serious risk of stroke? Transdermal oestrogen is considered no risk, if it's a GP or Chinese whispers that have said no I would want to see an accredited menopause specialist.

Constant hot flushes & that stress won't be helping your body either.

Hi HC

 :welcomemm:

As you can see we're a straight talking lot here  ::) !!

What the others have said re transdermal HRT.

I'm also flabbergasted by your doc's comment.

Absolutely no evidence whatsoever. Don't buy one but if you want to try placebo  magnet therapy - buy yourself a cheap one from a DIY store. Placebo won't actually replace oestrogen though so you won't get any actual benefit even if you perceive your symptoms to decrease....

Good luck :)

I suspect the reason for the magnet's success may be that those whose problems are made worse by stress may feel more relaxed wearing one because they believe it will make them better...and because they are less stressed, they do feel better.

Mine went in the bin years ago (yes, I was desperate enough to try it.  Along with a magnetic bracelet, but at least that's pretty, so I still wear it although it doesn't 'work'!)

Dorothy,
You are absolutely on the money- Stress is an absolute menace and causes soooo many problems. I have had anxiety for the best part of 30 yrs and boy oh boy when it is bad I have all sorts of ‘life threatening ‘ conditions
HC- sounds like all your stuff is related ( I might be wrong) but high BP and heart rate are sure sign that stress is a key factor here- of course high anxiety will usually tip over into depression at some point.
The only ‘therapy ‘ that has ever been useful for me is medication, then when I start to feel better, relaxation. I have never found CBT useful as what are my specific worries- everything LOL 🤯.
As everyone else has said patches all the way- all the ‘professionals and press' goes on about ‘risks' , well we all might live another 5 or 50 yrs or get run over by the proverbial bus.  It is about cost/benefit and the fact that you need to live right now.
Sorry - I am ones of those that will really do my own thing regardless of ‘advice' lol

yes your on the money my issues are all related the doctor has given me yet another tablet that works for the hot flushes and my blood pressure so fingers crossed this works.  im actually meeting a nutrionist regarding food and all my ailments to see if anything that way can help also.

Fast heart rate and depression can be symptoms of the menopause. Press for alternative hrt because there are options. Can you ask for a referral to a menopause clinic?

The other ladies are right, I was in desperation when I tried the magnet as told not menopause although I was convinced it was! Anyway, long story (3yrs) a number of investigations/specialists later, oh wait peri menopause now on HRT (also made lifestyle changes) & vastly improved - feel like the old me.
