Title: Does anyone get on with Utrogestan?
Post by: westie on June 27, 2019, 10:51:15 AM
 Morning ladies

I have finally accepted that HRT is probably the help I need to cope with these on going horrible symptoms of meno that I have been grappling with for far too long now.

I have been prescribed Estrogel and Utrogestan but have yet to start as I am concerned about all the negative reviews Utrogestan seems to get, both on here and when speaking to friends etc. My main concern is increased anxiety which seems to be a common problem, I am bad enough as it is without it getting any worse!

So, am looking for anyone who gets on with it and if you do can I ask how you take it? I was told I can take it orally or vaginally ( the latter apparently reduces side effects).

I know we are all different And will react differently but would love to hear some positive reviews of Utrogestan if there are any!!

Thanks in advance

W xxx

Hi I've been fine on Utrogestan. I take it orally every day.

Try not to listen to the horror stories. There are many women who take it with no problems but they never come on these forums because they don't need to. X

I guess I would class myself as one of the women who get on with Utrogestan - sort of  ;D. I have only ever taken it vaginally (2x200) for 12 days on a cycle and it hasn't been without side effects but none have been bothersome enough to justify me stopping. I wouldn't want to take it continuously 'though I don't think.

The effects can vary month to month for me. The first time I took it I was absolutely wiped out the following day but that wore off after a day. Most months it does make me a little more tired/lethargic by the time I get to day 8 or so. My usual low level (menopausal) tinnitus ramps up about the same time too and my mouth, eyes and nose become drier (also meno symptoms for me). Some months I have varying levels of breast pain/tenderness but that has subsided recently and this month was pretty pain-free. I also get slightly constipated in the last few days of taking it every month so I take some magnesium citrate to counter that, which seems to help. I can also get a little warmer at times but not really flushes and a few spots may appear on my face too - again around day 8 or later. It can increase my brain fog a little but I've never really noticed any affect on my mood.

Hope that helps x.

I also get tired on it, 200mg vaginally for 12 days per cycle. I'm in peri and it's worse when my own body is producing prog too. Anxiety was one of my symptoms but has gone after 3 months on HRT. Thousands of women take utro  and are perfectly OK, if they weren't no-one would prescribe it. As has been said you get a distorted view on this forum because most people are on here because they have problems.

Thank you for your responses, much appreciated. You are right, it must suit lots of people or it wouldn't be prescribed. I'll give it a go and let you know how i'm Getting on.

Westie. My rule of thumb is not to read too many side effects. Before starting anything new But if I then get a side effect I look into it. I always read the "contra indications" but skip the side effects and wait to see how I get on.
Those of us who struggle with utrogestan do seem to have very similar issues with it. But as with anything, not everyone will get every side effect. You can only try it and see how you get on. Good luck. Hope you find it suits you. X

Birdy, like you it was Utrogestan that started my anxiety off - before that I was on estrogen alone for a few months and it was definitely helping with the depression. Then I started on Utrogestan and wham, immediately the awful anxiety started. And despite taking breaks from it, changing to another progestin etc. it hasn't gone away. Interesting that you've had the same experience (bloody awful isn't it  :'( ) x
