I am a petite 5' tall and I used to weigh 8 stone. A year of peri and six months of HRT and I think I'm closer to 9 stone now.
My waist hasn't grown much but I can't get two pairs of my work trousers on and two skirts only fit over my hips if I have the waistband under my ribs!
My teenage daughters say they won't let me eat any less than I already do so is running the answer?
I have a weak left leg due to a DVT and wear compression and I don't own any running shoes!

Personally I wouldn't choose running - really hard on the joints and doesn't seem like much fun to me. I do a lot of swimming (although as that's not a load-bearing exercise it doesn't help with bone strength) and yoga. Did try Zumba but it was way too frenetic for me. A lot of my friends swear by Pilates. However, it sounds like you're looking for something that burns up lot of calories, which isn't really something I know anything about, sorry.

Hi orangefoot, I used to run & loved it,out in the fresh air etc but racjen is right,it's not great for the joints etc,I now physically can't run because of a foot injury, which occurred because of?yep, running but of course that's just me,it certainly made me fit & I felt great but now I'll go a speedy walk & I've got a cross trainer & rowing machine, all low impact exercises.
If you do fancy still trying it,what I would say,is get the best running trainers & don't pound whilst you run, take smaller steps.
Good luck 😉

Hi Orangefoot! I run.... or at least I shuffle along a bit! I think the jury is out on whether it's good or bad for joints. Personally not had any joint issues (I'm 55 and have been running for around 12 years). I took it up to help control my weight and get fit in a way that I could fit around the children and not cost the earth! I would say give it a try, if you like it great, if you don't then try something else. The idea is to get you heart rate up to help increase your metabolism and burn more calories, how you do that is a matter of preference. I would add that running is no replacement for weight bearing exercises which we all need to do as we get older to counteract muscle loss. I've also found that, as I get older, my shape is changing whether I like it or not even with the running! Good luck!

I do!
But only on a treadmill and only for half an hour a couple of times a week.
I would recommend the Couch to 5K if you're thinking about starting to run, and loud music!!

I found a cross trainer is one of the best things for slimming legs and hips x

Thanks all. I'll think about the couch to 5k and maybe walking more and when I have some spare cash I'll join a gym and try the crosstrainer.
