Title: Things that people have said to you...
Post by: Focus on May 08, 2019, 03:07:26 PM
So, it occurred to me that none of my friends have any idea of what perimenopause is all about (most of them are in their late 30s).

I was chatting to one of them about all the stuff that I'd been going through, and one of them said to me 'some women just breeze through the menopause'.

Anything someone that has told you about the perimenopause/menopause that has made you laugh?

I went on a post-cancer retreat about 18 months ago and was told very smugly by one of the others that she'd kept all menopause symptoms at bay using meditation and diet. Now, I'm not saying whether she actually did or not, my point would be that you have no way of knowing whether you're going to have a difficult menopause until it hits you (or doesn't). Being in the middle of an extremely difficult sudden menopause myself, brought about by chemotherapy, I really wanted to punch her.....don't worry, I didn't, but I stayed away from her for the rest of the retreat  :D

It's a natural process! It shouldn't cause you any trouble!
It happens to every woman!

Yep, just like periods, pregnancy and child birth.

It's fun being female.  ::)

About 15 years ago, before I was in Peri  but had read up on it a bit, I was in a London department store . I was talking to a staff member who was approx 10 years older than myself.  She suddenly stopped talking and visibly shuddered from top to toe. She then returned to normal and confided in me to say that she had had a hot flush.

One of my doctors responding to my back, neck and migraines ...”It's natural and you need to learn to deal with pain”

My SIL... ”Have you tried Estroven”

My mom...”Wow, you're having a hard time, it must be your nerves”

A friend...”Oh, I get headaches too once in awhile”

Me: 'Excuse my red cheeks, I'm having a hot flush'

My Sister: 'You're too young for the menopause' (I'd mentioned the word perimenopause)

Me: 'My hair has thinned by about a third in the last 3 years'

My sister: 'Oh, that'll be the 7 year cycle (??)'

She's only 14 months younger than me...Just you wait madam.....  ;)

(Though knowing my luck she'll breeze it)  ::)

I know someone who thinks that juice plus capsules will sort all menopausal symptoms out and HRT is not needed , found it quite amusing seeing her hot and bothered in the winter whilst I was sat there in my cardigan, I bit my tongue trying not to say anything!

That is an absolute corker - maybe he was a plumber masquerading as a dr? Mind you, even if that was the case he'd probably do as good a job as many of the GPs out there. What did you say in response?

I just saw this thread from a while ago;

I have been perimenopausal from 36-39 years old. This occurred over covid. Now not had a period for a year and blood tests confirm I have premature menopause. I am 39 years old now.

Generally I am slim (especially on face and arms), but have always carried a bit more weight on belly. In the past 3 years the public I work with, 3 random people asked if I was pregnant or had recently had a baby. The irony.....I am childless and now know I can't have kids.

I was both gutted and annoyed at being asked those questions. If only those people knew what I was and am still going through.

People who ask that are so insensitive! I cannot believe people would ask that these days when we know how upsetting and offensive it could be if they were wrong. I hope you are okay.

I got offered a seat at a bus stop (along with my 80 something year old mum) once when my tummy bloated so much from ibs that I did in fact look about 7 months pregnant in my wraparound dress. I was so embarrassed I took the seat rather than explain !

My Mum told me when I was depressed: U don't need to be depressed Dear : and "Don't lead your husband a dance like your father did me".  Later I realised that ........

My sister told me "I've been through all that" when I enquired how she was in her menopause.

After the first person asked me if I was pregnant I replied with "its lockdown weight gain" and as soon as I said it I regretted it. I should have just said "no I am not pregnant I am just fat"

But when 2 other people asked me.....I don't know why but I couldn't say "no I am just fat" I just mumbled some lie about a change in medication (because I have a separate health condition). When it happens again I will just say no and wait in silence to their response. I hope my silence embarrasses them instead of me.

Good idea.  The other query is "Who is asking exactly, R they on the need to know list"?
