Title: irregular heartbeat and flutters
Post by: NaturalMystic on January 27, 2019, 06:51:19 PM
Ladies,

I'm suffering terribly with these of late, daily.  If you've he'd them I know I don't need to explain them.

Which of you ladies experiences these, how often and what has helped reduce them, if indeed you have found something.

These scare me to death and its mentally exhausting stopping myself going into a panic.  Earlier I couldn't and was so scared this time its a heart attack 😒

Hi there NM, I have had palpitations since my 30s,think they run in the family,I actually just ignore them these days but I do get an ecg every now and again and they've all been ok. I think it's just the heart trying to rectify itself if it's missed a beat but I'd still mention it to your dr,ecgs take about 5 mins & a nurse does it.Anxiety obviously makes it worse xx

Hi Naturalmystic
I understand what you are going through, last August I ended up in A&E with the horrible palpitations, had a 24 hour trace done and cardiologist confirmed nothing wrong. GP then said caused by hormone fluctuations and prescribed propranolol, to be taken when and if needed.
The palpitations have now mostly stopped of their own accord, some very mild ones on and off. I do find the propranolol helps when I am feeling anxious.
Hope this helps, I would suggest a talk with your GP to check it out, but palpitations do occur in Peri/menopause. I think I am now post meno and my worst symptoms have only appeared in last year and 1/2.

Thanks ladies,

Yes I've been given propranolol.

Funny thing is that can rarely notice any palpitations when I have these flutters but I know its the heart because I had the 24 hour monitor about a year ago, over 400 extra beats per 24 hours.

Dr is referring me for further heart tests.

Gi this is crap isn't it girls 😉

NaturalMystic.

I am experiencing these atm, at least I think its my heart as I'm having yet another episode of internal shaking. These sensations make me very anxious which probably makes them worse. I am eight years post meno and never had any palpitations or shakiness until my periods suddenly stopped. The symptoms became worse and after three years of battling through I started HRT. Although much improved I still have internal shaking regularly but I can usually feel well and calm when the horrible feelings stop.  Like you I am exhausted by it all.

I've mentioned the palps to my GP but my blood pressure and cholesterol are fine and I don't have any risk factors for heart problems. A few years ago I wore a seven day heart monitor as part of a medical trial and that was fine too. My flutters etc are usually accompanied by some flushing, sweating, low mood and tearfulness so I suppose that hormones are the likely culprit.

I'm sorry that I can't be of more help but the fact that you are having more testing is a good thing as you will certainly get a correct diagnosis and treatment. My husband has a heart condition and his consultant told him never to worry because the heart is well understood and the treatments very effective. Wish we could say the same for the menopause!

Wishing you well.

K.

I was diagnosed with arrhythmia when I was 40 but when I started menopause at 45 they got ridiculous.  The 24 hr monitor picked up crazy beats, missed, doubled, slow, fast even when asleep.  I had to go and have a scan but once again it was the arrhythmia.  I can't have beta blockers as they cancel out the epipens I have to carry so had to suffer.  I'm now post meno by 4 years but I think testosterone has really helped calm them but I also think magnesium helped them a lot too

When I was on the oestrogen patch and got to 75mcg the palps were ridiculous x

Hi, I'm six years post menopausal and I've been getting palpitations and flutters ever since I stopped my period. I've worn the monitor three times and had quite a few ecg's but nothing has shown up.
The last few days I've had flutterings off and on and then last night I had a glass of wine and had palpitations for the rest of the evening and during the night.
They seem to have stopped at the moment fingers crossed. I was given a beta blockers to take when they're bad but I don't know why I'm always reluctant to take them.🤷🏼‍♀️
I'm still having lots of flushs and nightsweats - after all this time...sometimes I think they're getting fewer and maybe that's me finished with it all but no...they start getting bad again.
I'm sixty five now and beginning to think I'll be like this for life.
I'm not on HRT. I have tried it in the past but didn't feel much better in fact it increased my anxiety and I couldn't sleep so I stopped it. Also I was sixty two at the time and to start HRT after sixty you have an increased risk of various things. Being an anxious person I decided against taking it.

Bluebell, have you considered that the palpitations might be caused by acid reflux and consequent irritation of the vagus nerve? The acid reflux may not be obvious. The vagus supplies both the heart and stomach. The fact that you had a glass of wine last night is telling, as it may have increased the acidity of your stomach. You could try a couple of teaspoons of Gaviscon Advance after meals and last thing at night to see if it makes any difference. It fixed my palpitations. As well as this, try avoiding anything too acidic in the diet (eg, fruit juice, tea, coffee, tomatoes etc).

Hi Joaniepat, I'm actually taking Lansoprazole at the moment ... so no reflux.
The palpitations and flutterings have been a constant since the Menopause.
Thanks for replying. 😃
