Title: Can going on HRT cause hot flushes?!
Post by: flaxhigh on November 10, 2018, 05:23:13 PM
Hi everyone,

I know one of the reasons we go on HRT is to deal with hot flushes, but can going on it actually cause them?

I'm slowly trying to get on to (hopefully in the end) 3 patches or at least 2. I'm currently on almost a half of evoral 25.

But my hot flushes are now INSANE and almost constant. I was told by a doc that you get hot flushes when your body's oestoregn spikes but because you don't have enough oestrogen, you get a hot flush instead.

I'm wondering if the fact that I've introduced a bit - but not yet enough - oestrogen into my body I am 'spiking' my body with insufficient oestrogen and thus making my flushes worse.

Okay, this isn't very scientific - but can anyone shed any light?

Would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

I haven't heard of oestrogen causing hot flushes, it's usually caued by lack of it. Half a 25 patch is a very low dose, perhaps you need to increase it? I was in peri and prescribed the 50 patches. Are you peri or menopausal? If peri your own production of it can fluctuate.

12.5 is an extremely low dose of oestrogen, and you might be right - your body can ‘feel' it's there and is trying to get more. When it can't, your adrenals will produce more adrenaline to ‘force it', hence increased hot flushes. Have you been on this amount for very long? Maybe it might be time to increase to the full 25? And are you changing it at least twice a week?
I'm on a 75 patch and still get occasional break through flushes, usually on the day I'm due to change it xx

Thanks Sheila99 and NorthArm. I wonder if this is the case that my body is 'sensing' the oestrogen and is pressing for more. I'm post-menopausal.

I'm having to start really low because of side effects (pounding heart). This is my fourth attempt at getting on it and am taking it really really slowly. No way I can put on the total 25 yet as I couldn't tolerate it at all before but will try half a patch tomorrow as I've built up to 3/4 of a half a patch over the last 10 days.... Yes I am changing it twice a week. xx
