Title: Side/Flank Pain
Post by: kinola67 on November 07, 2018, 11:52:52 AM
Hi everyone, I have been searching the forum to see if anyone has suffered constant side/flank pain as part of peri. I have had lots of odd joint and other pains as part of my peri 'journey' and I am getting used to identifying some of them but this is new, tiring and constant and getting bad for sitting/driving - of which I do alot for work. I started peri a few years ago but I seem to have back tracked somewhat in that my periods are back again, having had none on the mini pill (still on that) and really just menopause symptoms such as night sweats to tell me that things were starting. It's all very odd having periods again but I understand that can happen before they tail off again. I just wonder if this pain is estrogen related. I've had burning sacrum pain on and off for over a year so it may be related to that. It's on my right side, I've not spotted any blood in my urine and I've had a blood test just yesterday but not sure how useful that will be. I just wonder if anyone can identify with this? Thanks everyone for reading.

Hi,
I have had a lot of joint pain in peri but found out I was low in Vit D which sorted it for a while. Have you had your Vit D level tested? I get a lot of right sided hip pain and into my lower back. At first the VitD cured that but now the hip pain is back and yes, it does sometimes go up my ride side. I put it down muscular pain. My posture is not the best.

Thanks for the reply, yes that makes sense, one of my first alerts to something being wrong was that I was exhausted and not being able to walk up the hill home after work. I was low on vit D so started supplements which have definitely helped. That was about a year and a half ago now, at that time I had a lot of very specific hip pain too which seems to have now gone away and changed into back and side pain! Maybe I need to look at the vits again. I hope you are starting to feel better, it's so tiring having to work out each ailment!

When I was retested earlier this year mine had got worse. Thought it was back again recently but had another test and it's ok.
I'm my own worst enemy as I'm not very active so think mine is brought in by that and my poor posture but it's always the right side.

For awhile a few months ago I had constant pain and muscle tension in my right side. I ended up having my gallbladder checked...but it was fine....pain continued. I still get it every now and then. Mine is at the base of my rib cage, right on the side, in-between the rib cage and hip bone. (It was more under the breast but has moved) When it gets really bad, I notice that I'm not standing up straight as well..leaning to the right. I notice when I sit while driving as well. I don't know if it is random muscle tension, back problems or something else but I tend to get more problems in my right side...hip, shoulder, back, check pain. I don't know if that is because it is my dominant side or not. But yes, I've had side/flank pain. It comes and goes and I honestly don't know what is causing it. I think it might be hormonally related in my case but I've been lazy at tracking when it occurs so I don't know for sure. I have too many aches and pains to track these days, I'd have to spend an hour a day just writing it all down!  ::)

Thanks ladies, that's more or less exactly where my pain is, this makes me feel better that it might be all related to the hormones, it's so annoying isn't it with all these things going on which individually you might think it's serious but because we have so many other aches and pains it is probably just part and parcel of the lovely menopause. I just spend too much time worrying about it all! I have managed to track this month, now that the periods are back, so am trying to see whether the pains are worse when I know hormones should be rising or falling but I'm not sure that works really! I am very right sided pain orientated too, from my wrist and neck which have been bad for years to my right ovary which is the one that always has cysts on it. I do pilates now which helps alot, sitting/driving are not great for me. Well maybe it's not a serious kidney disorder after all! I do feel such an idiot going to the doctors with all the pains, but on the other hand we have recently lost a friend here who was told it was the menopause when infact it was more serious. But as she was only 47 they didn't take her aches and pains and general unwell feeling very seriously. So I tell myself we just need to ask the GP if we are worried about something!

There is no harm going to the GP to check it. Trouble is we can put every little ache or pain etc down to menopause when it's not always meno related. Better to be safe than sorry.

It might be normal, totally sounds like mine! My right ovary is the one that hurts the most too! Both has cysts. I get more aches in the right leg and most of my chest pain is on the right...go figure.

As Snooze said, it never hurts to have it checked out. I've had so many doctor visits. It's not fun but it has been nice having a doctor that has checked out everything!

How strange! I also have pain on the right - sort of between my back and my hip. It's pretty debilitating actually, and nothing seems to fix it  :-\

My older  sister had the same pain during peri but in the left side!

Snooze, is she left handed?

I'm just so curiously following this! New peri symptom?? Like we need more.  ;D

I'm right handed, so assume that's why my pain is on right side.

Oh and I also have tennis elbow/tendinitis down my whole forearm and a weird pain (though not all the time) in my shoulder - also all on the right  ???

I have gotten random muscle knots in my right forearm....not from doing anything! How do you get a knot in your forearm??

I've gotten deep pain shoulder aches as well.

The left side of my body definitely has a lot less weird pains and issues...

No she's not!

My pain is a bit mixed. Hip and back pain on right. Elbow pain on left. Headache in eye always left eye. Breast pain only ever in my left boob (although that's the bigger breast!).

I have that but it's on the left side which I put down to always leaning on my left elbow. However the shoulder pain I get is often on the right side!

Some days I feel like I'm literally falling apart! My husband says 'you've always got something wrong with you, stop moaning'!

Just logged in to check messages! and see we are all literally falling apart! I went to an excercise class tonight to try and stretch out the pain as it does feel very muscular too but in the kidney area, not sure if it feels worse but will know in the morning I guess! maybe it's just all related but we are feeling pain signals from various bits of our bodies. My breasts have also blown up like balloons this week so there must be excess hormone which is maybe causing the sore joint/muscle at the same time. Who knows. I need to stop worrying about it!! Thanks ladies for the replies.x

I get tennis elbow. Really bloody painful.
I wear one of my sons elastic bandages when it's really bad...

And Snooze, my OH and son are always saying the same to me, ‘there's always something wrong with you'.   Lol     They ort to step into my shoes for a week and see how it feels....
Omg, I'd love to see that......lol

I hope the exercise helped the side pain!

Yes, I think it is definitely hormonal. I'm getting more aches today and even got the muscle spasms back (feels like bubbles popping under the skin in my calves...) and I actually have some breasts today!  ;D I never had much but they deflated quite a bit over the last several months.

yes I hear the same thing about something always wrong with me. "Another doctor visit?" Maybe!  ;)

It's so up and down isn't it, one day one symptom, the next day something else! I decided to try and forget all about it over the weekend, did my usual exercise stuff towards the end of last week and felt reasonably upbeat but it's not shifting. I am into my 4th week of the cycle (now that I can actully track it!) so I will see what happens pain wise this week. It's funny you mention breasts, I have 'deflated' over the past couple of years, just assumed that was part and parcel of the process, but the last few weeks I have inflated again! not sure which hormone that's down to but it really is quite amazing how different they look and feel!

Sorry the pain is still there. I do hope it gets better. Have you tried heat on it or on your back near the area? I would use a heating pad wrapped from my spine as far around as I could to the front. It usually gives me a little relief. It was pretty awful once so I went to a chiropractor. It went away for about week with that. That's what confirmed to me it was muscle/spine issues. Doctors had no idea what I was talking about.

Go and get a urine test. Could be a kidney infection and if so needs treatment pronto. I had similar symptoms once, which I assumed were muscular, and ended up in a lot of trouble.

Don't take chances, that's what doctors are there for

As oestrogen levels drop off muscles may become lax = aches and pains!

How is your urine?

Hi all sorry such a late reply, I went back to the gp's this week as bloomin pain not shifting, urine test sent off and scan booked. Honestly feel I'm never away from the place but better to be persistant than worry all the time and do nothing I guess. We lost a school mum recently who had put everything down to hormones so that's always in the back of my mind. If I get some answers I will post as it's so useful to know how everyone is getting on with symptoms etc Thanks everyone for your answers, x
