Title: Flu jab - yay or nay ?
Post by: groundhog on October 20, 2018, 10:46:56 PM
Hi ladies,

Who has it?

I'm nervous as I've never had it but then again I wasn't dealing with a fistula before.  I'm nervous of having it as you read so many horror stories but I'm also nervous of not having it as these days I don't fight things off as well.

Just wondered who does what ?

Hi groundhog
I've had the flu jab every year for the last thirty odd years as I have a chronic illness.
I've never had any issues with it, other than a little localised pain around the injection site, that lasted a couple of days. This is only noticeable when you lay on your arm at night though.
My husband and elderly mother have also never had any issues with it.
Hope this helps 😃

I receive an invitation for one as I have a mild congenital heart defect but I have never bothered with it.
My teenage son had his first last year because he has developed lung problems, he had the spray though and he became ill a couple of days later, with temp, shivering that laid him low for a couple of days, but he will still get it again this year.

It's a 'yay' from me. Mainly because I don't think the kids / grandkids would let me live it down if I didn't. One of those 'monkey see, monkey do' kinda deals haha.

The jab nearly killed a friend of my husband last year, so no.

This years Jab has been the worst for me GH but personally I'd still rather go through my week of a very sore bruised arm and mild symptoms (or could be just coincidence ) than ever go through the flu again which ended up with double pneumonia x

It's a YAY from me. I'm with Annie0710 and Jodie_28. Better to have a few days of soreness or mild symptoms than to have flu that affects us much more and is more dangerous the older we get

The only times M in L had 'flu was after the 'flu jab.  The 2nd time she almost died.  For 3 days she sat on the settee unable to move so became hydrated, her mineral salts dropped and her lack of potassium became dangerous.

A person/animal should have inoculations only when well.  [what vets don't tell you ....... ].  Why over-load an already bad immune system with something that may cause the body to go into fight mode?

I don't have 'flu jabs.  I had 'flu twice: 1987 and 1988, both in the March.  Never had it since.

I have been having it for quite a few years. Never any problem.

There are three versions this year, the nasal spray which I guess is for children, ordinary (quadrivalent, ie protects you against 4 strains of flu), and adjuvanted trivalent (which is supposed to be more effective and protects against 3 strains). The last one is for over-65s and anyone else at particular risk. I had the over-65s version. I had a sore upper arm for a few days, and felt a bit tired for the rest of the day after I'd had it. No problems apart from that, and I have had no problems at all in previous years. It might have been because I had the adjuvanted version that I got the sore arm.

The NHS offer it to those who will suffer more if they get it and for some people it can be life-threatening. On this basis I would have it if offered (they don't offer it to me).

I've been wondering whether to have it. Never had it before.   I can get it free at work.

My parents always had it and my dad would be fine but my mother would always feel ill after hers for a few days. Dad is no longer here but Mum still has it and it hasn't given her any after symptoms for a good few years now but she was told this years is three times stronger and to expect to feel a bit ill but the only thing that bothered her was her arm which was sore for a few days.

Father in law has the jab but a few years ago he still got a really bad dose of the flu and apparently this happened a lot last year which is why this years dose is stronger.

A bit scaremongy that (very DM). What they don't say is that those with a compromised immune system, like my husbands friend, are more at risk of a GBS reaction. It's a roll of the dice really.

My choice is not to have it. That could change next year, never say never, simply no at this present time x DD

I agree they love to scaremonger. But it is true that this years dose is three times stronger as other people I know who had it were told the same thing.

I had mine a few weeks back.
I have an auto immune disease of the liver.
Apart from a sore arm for a couple days , im ok.

Although last week, I did feel like I'd caught a virus or something, it felt like
I'd caught a cold, but wouldn't come out properly.
Don't know if that had anything to do with it or not, but the leaflet said that we start to
make our own antibodies 2/3 weeks after, and it was about that time.
I feel ok now though, lasted for about a week.

I'd like to have it but due to a mild egg allergy I can't. It's my first invitation too for a free one. Don't like to turn down a gift 🤣

I've never had it and won't be this year as well even though it's offered at my place of work.

There was an article in this weekends paper about it.  It says it only helps 1 in 10 people.

I've had a flu jab every year for about 30 years and been fine, not even had a sore arm with most of them. I was told though, not to have ( but to wait awhile) if I had a high temperature or felt unwell at the time.

I would certainly take it but our region has run out of it, and no idea when it will be getting any more stock ( over 65 one)  Apparently the Department of Health have totally underestimated the amount required.

Same here with low stocks of the over 65 one. My partner is 60 and they've got enough of his version.

My husband had it for the first time last year and I don't know if it's a coincidence, but he became severely depressed, overnight and I was seriously worried about him. He also had a migraine which he had never experienced before and achy shoulders. The depression lifed after a couple of days and the aches lasted about a week. He says never again. It's rather put me off, but my 85 year old mother has it every year with no problems. It's a hard call.
